Title: Around the Horn(ed)
Post by: catzacker on November 07, 2012, 09:42:36 AM
So this will be the best rush defense we have faced so far this year – ranked #1 in the conf vs the run (we’re #2).  They’re #4 in pass defense efficiency (we’re #5). Their scoring D is #4 in conference (we’re #2), total D they are #3 (we are #4).  They do a good job of getting to plays behind the LOS, ranking #3 (we’re #5) in TFL and #4 in sacks (we’re t-#2).  They take it away just as much as we do (24 this season) however they have given it up.  But I don’t think you can just assume they will always.

Some might not think much of Gary as a coach, but I think his defenses play hard, aggressive, and that teams does not quit.  They will probably emulate what OSU did in terms of crowding the LOS, getting their tall DE’s flexed out a bit to deter some of Collin’s quick throws off audibles,  and disguising who is coming – I expect them to execute it better than OSU.  I also expect them to head hunt on defense when Collin runs it.

On offense, they are resourceful and opportunistic.  Our safeties will have to play entirely better than vs. OSU because TCU will force us to commit people to the box to stop the QB/run game and that’s where we can get in trouble with big plays.  Their QB can make plays with his feet which will give us trouble – hell, the 3rd string QB for OSU scrambled against our D extremely well.  We absolutely cannot let this team get out to the early/easy leads/scores that we’ve allowed NT, KU, TT, and OSU to get.

TCU hasn't lost a game in November since 11/6/08 (@ Utah) and has only lost one other time in November since 2005.

In short – dogfight. I’m terrified.

You make some good points, but we will most certainly get 2+ TO's from these fools.

TCU offensive TO's:

Grambling 1
Kansas 4
Virginia 2
SMU 2
Iowa State 5
Baylor 0
Texas Tech 3
Oklahoma State 3
West Virginia 3

The only teams who didn't get 2+ TO's from TCU are an FCS school and Baylol.

TCU has the 14th-highest Offensive TO rate nationally
KSU has the 6th-highest Defensive TO rate nationally

We are going to get AT LEAST 2 TO's, most likely more than that

Have lost to:
Taco Walkers
Sand Aggy
Okie Lite

Not worried. We are playing half their second string squad. I think you are going to see a large discrepancy in talent/speed out on the field Saturday, and it certainly will not be in their favor.

Offense will do it's usual thing. I'd expect another huge game from our defense. Multiple TO's and a TD.

For consideration...

We lead the lead in take aways...
They lead in giveaways...
We lead in forced fumbles...
They lead in fumbles given up...
Boykin has 7 pics in 5 games...

In their last 5 games, this great TCU defense has given up (regulation only, I took out OTs)...
32 points per game
375 yards per game
5.7 yards per play

Now, none of that is completely terrible, but lets not act like this is the best defense we've played. Its very good, but Tech, OU, and ISU have equal or better defenses.

And I don't expect them to execute better than OSU or any of the other solid defenses we've seen.

TCU hasn't lost a game played a good team in November since 11/6/08 (@ Utah)  because they have played in a crap conference since 1996.

In short – dogfightthey haven't beaten anyone and nobody should be terrified.

I mean, I'm not saying I don't respect them. They could beat us and I go back and forth between which remaining game is tougher, them or Texas.

But they have a ton of flaws and are very young. They are mistake prone and I think we can take advantage of that. I think they are physical, but I'm not sold they are as physical as OSU, Tech, ISU, or OU.

As long as Klein plays and we clean up mistakes we'll be fine. Plus they simply don't present the same problems that OSU presented to our defense, this will be much more like defending ISU which was our best defensive game of the year.

I’ll disagree with the ISU reference;  TCU’s skill positions are much better than ISU’s.  Also, TCU’s pass efficiency is #7 in conference, ISU is #9 however to give a better view of the actual distance between those two, TCU is #32 nationally and ISU is #92.  Further, rush offense – TCU is #7 in conf, ISU is #10.

TCU’s defense is much better than ISU’s and it does force turnovers.  As I pointed out, TCU's rush defense is #1 in the conf and it’s no surprise that they lead the conf in interceptions (16) – we are second with 13.

Also, they probably have the least hostile environment of any school in the conference outside of KU.  We will most likely be able to run our offense unimpeded by noise.

TCU’s defense is much better than ISU’s and it does force turnovers.  As I pointed out, TCU's rush defense is #1 in the conf and it’s no surprise that they lead the conf in interceptions (16) – we are second

A little context.  TCU strength of schedule is ranked #180.   Compared to ISU (#7), Tech (#11), OU (#21), etc.  Their S.O.S. is so low because they haven't yet faced the Top 3 teams in the BigXII, KSU, OU, UT.  Basically, they beat up on bottom feeders (KU, BU), competed with some middlings (Tech, WVU), got destroyed by other middlings (OSU, ISU), and haven't yet faced the top teams.

I'm not saying we shouldn'e be concerned.  Every game from here on out is huge.  It will be their superbowl and, with bowl eligibility locked up, TCU's got nothing to lose.  But, when citing TCU's defensive stats, it's important to put those numbers in context.

Alrighty then. Agree it will come down to turnovers. If we have 1 or less I think we win. Two or more I don't know.

Regarding our losses, check the box scores and stats. We dominated Tech who barely managed 300 yards in regulation while we had 450+. Three turnovers and allowing a 1st half onside kick was the equalizer. ISU the same thing. Two TOs inside their 5 and another freaky on returned for a score. Both should have been easy wins. I wonder how KSU vs ISU would have ended up if Sams found out 2 days prior to the game he was the starter? ISU had their chances as it was. OSU I have no answer. They were pretty good and we were terrible. That happens with a young team on the road. yet we were still in it in the 4th. Boykin was way off with his accuracy in that game. We got several very good players back last week which helped with pass rush, OL and WR.

If Boykin plays like punting can be ok, as GMFP preaches (how many coaches in the conf think that way?), you guys are in for a major tilt. If he wants to show the media how big his arm is then we could see another OSU experience.

They've held one opponent under 30 in their last 5 games (not counting OT). And that was 21 vs Baylor, who had 6 TOs but still gained 430 yards and averaged neatly 8 yards per snap.

Thus far, you've beaten the bottom feeders of the Big 12 and a big east team and lost to the three middle of the pack teams.  Now, it's time to play "big boy football" and this isn't the MWC anymore.

Your team is not only young, but also beat up.  We don't turn the ball over, and y'all do.  If Patterson wants to punt, let him.  We don't punt.  We score.

Not sure if serious....

We score.

It won't be all that close.

 :bill:
A nice two year run = "Big boy"? Lulz. While we were beating Wiscy in the Rose Bowl two years ago you and CatFancy Nation were crapping your pants wondering which Conference might take you. Now you have us and WVU to thank for keeping the Conference together. The television partners wanted us pure and simple.

We'll have a good time. The post game tailgate can double as the Wake for your NC dreams ;)

Sounds to me like you're still a little bitter about getting passed over for Baylor back in '96...

 :peek:
Haha! We've put them in their place since that happened. I think we are 4-1 outscoring them 196-67 or some such. All that matters is we are here now. BTW, might be a good idea if you guys wear black for the pending Wake. Just a friendly Frog fan trying to help.
I thought TCU was doing the BLACK OUT for this game.

Apparently the Voters and Computers thought enough of us to rank us 3rd prior to the bowls. We were also favored vs 4th ranked Wiscy. One loss by UO or AU from the NC game. No need to be all butthurt about it.

i haven't read any of the last page and a half, but i would like to take a guess at what frog aggie is saying:

"nobody has been able to move the ball against us, i don't see you guys scoring that much on us."

"if you guys turn it over a couple times, no doubt we win"

"as long as we take care of the ball, we win"

"your pass defense is awful and we threw for a lot vs wvu."

"we've beaten good teams a couple times we will win"

TCU gives up 5.2 ypp, which is about average, and it still has to play us (6.7), OU, (6.2) and Texas (6.4), which are all top-25 ypp offenses.

By the time the season is over, TCU's defense is going to look pretty mediocre, imo.

I did the math, and based upon that stat, we're gonna lose by 7 wkts in the last 5 overs. Here is the math. Simple really:
TCU won by 7 wkts (D/L method)
TCU 200/3 (31.1 Ovs)
54 (47)
102 (95)
KSU 188/6 (33.0 Ovs)
6.1-0-35-1
7-0-50-1
CRR 6.42

Partnership 127(99)

Last Wkt  5(6)

CBSSports Conference power ranking had MWC and Big 12 neck and neck in 2010. Big 12 is consistently over rated. Look at this year. Ou JV is 3-3 in this and dominated in 2 of the 3 losses. We have played the three top offenses in the conference and held them all considerably below their averages. My, my what a week in week out nightmare. If we hadn't lost our QB we would be 8-0 without breaking a sweat. Thems the breaks though. We're gonna wreck this joint when we have a full Varsity roster again starting next year.

ISU's guy isn't a lot different. TCU runs the QB a bit more, but Barnett has better numbers. :dunno:

Obviously Boykin has running ability, but he hasn't really hurt any opponents by running that much. Since he's been playing a lot, he doesn't have a game with a better average than 3.5 ypc.

I agree that the plane crash is the main reason they lost.  And because their defense was really shitty and they had no business being ranked #2.

Won't be a problem TCU's offensive line is really bad. Like really really bad, their QB odeeeing is the best thing to ever happened to them, Because they run a lot more zone read now releasing their tackles to the second level thus hiding their shitty line. We did this last year when are O-line was marginal. When TCU has/tries to pass the ball we will get to the QB.   :driving:

I know score comps are weak sauce, but TCU and KSU have five common conference opponents so far (KU, ISU, TT, OSU, and WVU). Against those teams, TCU's combined points scored/allowed is 149/173 (-24). Ours is 237/105 (+132). So I feel pretty good about this.

Pretty sure this is the first time we've played a team with more than one conference loss this year.

Lots of teams have good defensive stats before they play us.  TCU hasn't played us yet.  Simple really.

Cats by 21
You guys gained 364 yds vs ISU. We had 450+ with our Freshman QB starting his first game. He was listed at RB that Wednesday.

We gained a road W against ISU. You lost to ISU at home. Congrats on ur yardage, though.

care to breakdown the comparative stats against KU, Tech, OSU, WVU???
Defensively we were superior in all but WVU but we were more than adequate against them. Tech had 313 at the end of regulation versus 442+ versus you guys. Turnovers.

As I said in my initial post, if we don't turn the ball over I think you can say good night to NC dreams. One or maybe two, depending where on the field, and it is a toss up. If we go 5 like versus KU and ISU we can forget about it. I think Boykin showed good poise last week and is understanding the offense better every week. OL is getting healthy and Maponga looked good coming back from his foot injury. I think we will be the fastest D you see this year.

I hope your team is as confident as you guys. We've heard it every week including KU, Baylor, etc. Line appears to be TCU +8. The number 2 team versus an unranked "mid major" is only -8? Everyone outside the Big bad 12 seems to understand what you are getting into.

We're going to smoke these assholes.  Once we beat Tech I honestly stopped thinking there was a single team in the Big 12 (not named OU) that could play with K-State.  Barring an extremely uncharacteristic collapse or unfortunate injury (Klein ) no opponent will finish a game within 14 points of the Cats.  K-State is simply too good for everyone else in the league.

WVU
Tech

all ran that and it still didn't work...and TCU doesn't even do that...so, ya when they huddle on any down and let Arthur Brown set his lasers to lethal they play will already be over.

I think the thing you aren't quite grasping is how ruthlessly efficient we are on offense. We eat freshman QBs for lunch. We score almost every time we touch the football, when your freshman realizes that he has to score everytime he has the football then he will start pissing down his leg. It has happened to much better QBs than yours this year. The pressure our offense puts on the other team is just too much. Ts and Ps.

you are too modest.

Kstate has a great team and root for you guys except when you play TCU.

Realistically, yes, TCU will lose. Some people fail to realize how young this team is. A lot of these kids are fresh out of high school.

Optimistically, I wish TCU could pull an upset. Highly unlikely.

Either way is a win win i think if your a TCU/Big 12 fan. Win... great. Lose... Kstate is 1 step closer to a national championship and shutting up the SEC.

No one plays more fundamentally sound football then K State. Discipline.

Its what Patterson aspires this young TCU team to be in the future.

If there are any 2 teams more alike in the Big 12, its TCU and KState... and its not just because of the color purple but because of the coaches.

The music is usually loud and was playing almost right up to the ball being snapped, even when we were on offense.

Playing a highly ranked team when you actually have something other than 5th place in the Big XII on the line?

The season is far from over. Mathematically, although distant, TCU isn't out of winning the Big 12.

Its not just 5th place on the line, a more desirable bowl game as well.

And no matter what you are playing for or however way you put it, having the #2 team in the nation on your home turf is big.

Add on top of that a nationally broadcasted prime time game to showcase a new stadium.

Yes, it is sad that its one of TCU's biggest home games.

Yes, having the announcers cracking jokes about both teams being purple and the cats feeling right at home will be great.  Also I bet there will be at least one mention of your stadium as a transition to talking about K-State's west side expansion.

Guys, just face it:  Superbowl.

That's against the team we play after you.

Denied.  This is your Super Bowl.

According to y'all we have nothing to lose, or just the measly 5th place in the big 12.

On the other hand, every game is y'alls superbowl.

You guys need help to get into the national championship game because Oregon and Notre Dame has a better looking schedule.  :bill:

Y'all beat OU

Oregon beat USC

Notre Dame can beat both... oh know.

I'm not one bit worried.

TCU = young and sloppy

KSU = experienced and disciplined.

I was trying to be cordial and reasonable but some of you are a quite arrogant.

2 good years and a decade of mediocrity goes a long way for confidence. Kinda like Baylor fans...until RG3 left.

Here's the deal, just lay back and take your beating like the rest of the conference so that your conference's elite team can represent your conference in the MNC.  Pretty simple, really.

Right. At some point, it becomes inevitable, and you might as well just lay back and enjoy it.

We're stoked, nothing to lose, no pressure.  It will be fun.  GP has a way of pulling off a big upset when he moves to a new league.  Enjoy Fort Worth, friendly folks who will show you respect.

Nope.  TCU fans suck for the most part.  Hard to troll people that just show up to the game for the social experience.

As long as Klein plays Whether Klein or Sams starts, and we clean up mistakes we'll be fine. Plus they simply don't present the same problems that OSU presented to our defense, this will be much more like defending ISU which was our best defensive game of the year.
