Funny how tastes change...I used to buy albums and listen cover to cover, now it's all streaming or radio and short snippets, so I have not grown to love artists as much as indivudal songs.

I picked artists that I still listen to today. And while I listened to a crap ton of MJ in the 80s, I have no desire to listen to him today.

The not being able to choose between Celine Dion and Tupac for the 90's while also accusing everyone of having tastes that were too white was pretty great.
-
Also I agree there should be more black artists in everyone's list in every decade
-
My lists would definitely be biased against black artists. But I also wouldn't be trying to do some objective, academic study.

The not being able to choose between Celine Dion and Tupac for the 90's while also accusing everyone of having tastes that were too white was pretty great.
One was a massive pop star and the other was, possibly the biggest rap star of the decade. I spent that entire decade living in two mid-sized Kansas cities. You couldn't turn the radio on in the 90's without hearing Celine. Even before Titanic and the Falling Into You albums she was the queen of one huge hit per album, we were learning Celine songs in French class in 1992.
I didn't really listen to Tupac until I got to Manhattan but I don't think there was one single time that I went out that i didn't hear at least one Tupac song. IMO he was much bigger than Biggie, Snoop, and Dre. I preferred Snoop but I think pac was the bigger star. That being said my wife grew up in upstate New York and she didn't know Tupac at all. She knew all of the Bad Boy guys and Wutang. I didn't know anything about wutang until Chappelle's Show, although I did know ODB.
Because Pac didn't differentiate himself enough from other rap stars of the decade I probably should have picked Celine but rap in the 90s should have been represented because of the overall cultural influence. Same could be said for Nirvana but I didn't want to pick a group that was a shooting star, but for only 2 years. But they were the unquestioned kings of 90s alternative which, like rap, was highly culturally significant.
-
Clams your list is crap, but this is an amazing thread topic. I could spend the rest of my life talking about it.

If I had done the 60s it would have been Sam Cooke And Otis Reddy. The 50s would have been Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry.

Snoop v pac was the hardest decision on the list, mir.
I remember riding the bus in 5th grade and my friend had stole his sister's strictly for my niggaz CD and I was blown away listening to it on my discman. I had my mom buy it for me the next week.
Thinking back now though it's kind of :sdeek: buying an 11yr old that album.

Your mom is/was a G. Some Wichita fuckos stole my discman with my chronic and doggystyle CDs while I was running in a track meet in Hutchinson.

I probably should have put 2pac on my list. I bought 2pacalypse Now 4 times because it kept getting stolen by girlfriends.

I had a very similar experience on a bus in sixth grade where someone had a Chronic tape.
Except no way in hell would my parents buy it for me.

MIR, if I were going to pick a female pop artist from the 90s, I'd go Whitney. At least in my mind she was bigger than Celine Dion and had a bigger impact in terms of influence on subsequent artists.

That's fair. Certainly her most popular single was in the 90's, but for me her best work came in the 80's. She had very little impact after I Will Always Love You and that was in 1992. She had some good singles after the bodyguard soundtrack but I doubt many remember them. Heartbreak Hotel? It's Not Right but It's Okay?

Why do you people hate Adele?

Adele is awesome but she can't even be a top female pop artist of the '10s ahead of Taylor Swift, Gaga, Bey, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, and if she doesn't get back in the studio she's going to get passed by Camilla Cabillo.
She's in a group of artists like Alicia Keys, Annie Lennox, The Dixie Chicks Santana, John Mayer, etc. Artists who were immensely talented, more so than their contemporaries, and they had awesome commercial success, just not as much commercial appeal as their slightly less talented, but more popular peers.

I know ppl loved 70's music, but I just about hate it all.

I place a high value on innovation, too. Like, I hear Michael Bublé and think it's a guy trying to sound like Frank Sinatra. Why don't I just listen to Frank Sinatra instead of a guy trying to sound like him???

this casual observer of the country genre would opine that kenny planted the seeds which have since bloomed into today's crossover country pop stars.
-
Kenny Rogers has a very distinctive voice that sounds rough ridin' great. I always thought The First Edition was kind of an experimental band, too.
-
One of my child hood friends from Iowa had a dad who played with Kenny for a bit, before he (friends dad) went into gospel music and started his own label. Had a ton of pictures of him and KR. Was pretty cool to see.
-
I know ppl loved 70's music, but I just about hate it all.

Sonically and innovations wise the 80's are light years ahead of the 70's, just like the 90's are way ahead of the 80's. I think the 70's have a defining sound, the decades that follow do not.
-
80's music was rough ridin' great, anyone who says otherwise is just wrong

Rap was non-existent in the 60's and 70's. I'm not wild about 80's music myself but if you're a rap fan I don't know how you discount a decade that produced N.W.A, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Salt-N-Peppa, DJamer Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Too Short, Kid-n-Play, etc. Rap has evolved twice over but the 80's were an amazing start to the genre.

It's specific to music I like. Rock, Rap and Country were great in the 90s.
70s Sugarhill Gang was rap's zenith.

Rankings of decades for music
1. 90s
2. 70s
3. 10s
4. 60s
5. 00s
7. 80s
8. 50s
Is this specific to a certain genre or something? Urban music and women in music essentially became mainstream in the 80's and you have that behind decades in which these things didn't even exist.
