I reffed volleyball and basketball also this year, can't remember if I mentioned. Basketball is hard to ref!

How exaggerated is your strike three call? I think that would be my favorite part of umping a game.

This is the key question. I would really hope CF3 has a super exaggerated SAFE or OUT motion for plays at the plate.

On a close play at home I absolutely exaggerate the out/safe call. You have to. On a called strike three I am less big than I used to be. All I do now is yell "THREE!" as I pull the chain.

3
The biggest tip I would give anyone is do your best and be confident in your calls. We had a couple young dudes this weekend that actually did a decent job, but half the time no one knew what the call was. Even balls and strikes was a struggle. I wanted to tell him, "you are going to get yelled at by dumbass parents either way, so just make your call and make it so we all know what it is".

Appeals are always my favorite. For those that don't know, there are only two umps. When someone gets on, the field ump stands behind the pitcher. Its always a big lol when a kid checks his swing and the coach asks for an appeal. The field ump has basically the same view as the home plate up, but he is just further away so an appeal makes no sense anyway. 99.9% of the time, he just agrees with the call. This weekend, the field ump was a crotchety old dude and they appealed to him and he basically said, "eff off, I don't have the angle for that". The home ump was a young kid and was like, ok what evs, guess my call stands. It was a hoot.

To avoid this if it's close and I'm behind the dish I'll just say "YES HE DID!" and bag a strike. If I'm in the field and someone appeals unless it's absolutely terrible I'm not overturning his call.

Yeah I'm good. A colleague and I had discussed doing this for a while and pulled the trig today. 3 slices of Casey's B-Fast pizza is like eating 9 hotdogs tho as far as the tummy is concerned.

5
A lot of the weird stuff you just have to learn after the first time you mess it up. As was said earlier in this thread, sell every call, especially close plays.

6
I ordered an entire breakfast pizza from Casey's to be delivered.  :frown:

Anyone got any umpire questions? And no, I won't be answering "why are the umpires at ______ so shitty" or "the umpire at my kid's game had a real attitude problem. What's his deal?"

Got any good umpire job progression tips? I think it would be perfect for my 15 year old but he doesn't want to start in the rec leagues and wants to go straight to doing competitive games. Hes got a connection to basically do it all summer at 3&2 if he wants to but I think he's going to get his ass handed to him if he goes straight to that and will quit and never go back.

Depends on what level he starts at at 3&2. You have to grind through those little kid games. The only real way to progress is stick with it and get reps. I think its a fantastic side hustle because you can pretty much work as much or as little as you want and they are so short on umpires at all levels that you can move up.

Biggest thing is if he starts on machine pitch- be prepared for some dumb crap. The young parents don't know the game and get way too emotional about it.

Today I was working a 14u field, 3 games, but these were very high level teams. Saw a kid mash a homer about 380 feet.

I umpired through the KSHSAA season and am on a new (to me) assigning group for games here in KC. Yesterday I had to do 2 10u games which I hadn't worked teams that young in a long time but whatever, it paid the same so no big deal.

So one team is just getting raked, I mean absolutely murdered. It was probably 18-0 after the first. In the second inning some kid didn't back up a ball hit to the outfield so the coach pulled him Norman Dale style and played the rest of the inning with 8 players on the field. Never seen that before and I feel bad for those kids.

Not sure if it's a peeve so much as a curiosity... But what's the deal with people who feel the need to spit into the urinal before they start peeing? Like I don't think they just spit a lot and sometimes it happens to be at the urinal, it seems like a very specific and deliberate ritual.

Guilty. No idea why.

I go to like 1 game a year. I'm coming from a perspective where I have multiple family gatherings on Christmas.

CF3, excellent breakdown and pod names. took me a minute to realize they were not in chrono order.
it seems to me the season is going to come down to the Look What You Made Me Do pod. i don't think they go 4-0 here. probably 3-1, resulting in 12-5 overall

You're probably right. I mean we only won 11 regular season games last year and won the Super Bowl, so a 3-1 in LWYMMD is fine. I would like the bye tho.

Harrison isn't dynamic enough to become some conservative talking head or whatever. He'll start some foundation for catholic leadership and families or something.

Rest advantage. We play Carolina off their bye, otherwise fairly even. The short rest for the Christmas game blows but Pitt is on the same rest.

I hope KC on Christmas becomes the new Cowboys on Thanksgiving.

I hope it doesn't. It's annoying.

SCHEDULE ASSESSMENT

The games can be grouped into 4 groups of 4 and a group of 1. Obviously there are surprises as the season goes on and games that seem pud become bigger and vice versa, but this is the pre-seas eval. I'll give a pod-record prediction, but not game by game. I know this is not the traditional pod system but it's what I created.

These are MAY breakdowns. So much can change. We don't know Rice's suspension yet. We don't know what other offseason nonsense is going to mess with us. But here we go anyway

Pod 1: BAD BLOOD
vs. Baltimore
vs. Cincy
@ San Fran
@ Buffalo

All teams we've beaten in the last 2 postseasons. Each of these games will be the biggest game of the week in the NFL when they are played. I think it sucks to play Cincy week 2, I'd rather have it be a December matchup, but whatever. These teams will be gunning for us guys. These will be tough games, but remember, the regular seas isn't where we shine brightest.

Predicted record: 2-2

POD 2: Look What you Made Me Do
@ Atlanta
@ LA Chargers
@ Cleveland
@ Pittsburgh

All roadies. All against teams with playoff hopes. Each of these games are bigger games for the other team than for the Chiefs, but these are the type of games we feast on. These are games where we remind the league who's league it is.

Predicted Record: 4-0

POD 3: I Knew you were Trouble
New Orleans
Tampa
LA
Houston

Home games against teams that might be decent? Who knows. Guys, we're dropping at least one of these in a way that is gonna be a head scratch. It always happens, and we'll be fine. One of these will be an ass-kicking like the Chicago game last year. 2 will be fine wins (think LA and Cincy last year) and one is that complete dud.

Predicted Record: 3-1

POD 4: Anti-Hero
@ LV
Denver
LV
@ Denver

We really went 2-2 against these nerds last year I know. These games are the absolute Super Bowl for these teams and aren't even rivalries for us anymore. I think Denver gets one on us and we sweep LV.

Predicted Record: 3-1

POD 5: Wildest Dreams
@ Carolina

They suck. We'll roll. Frankly they are barely an NFL squad.

Predicted Record: 1-0

So that's looking like a 13-4 record on the season. Another division championship, either the 1 or 2 seed. Wake my ass up in January.

But what do YOU think? YOU be the coach!

I'd fight the battle with you if there were actual news getting drowned out but it's all nonsense at this point of the year anyway.

Alright but I'm gonna be counting on you when Clark Hunt's daughter is spotted at a Maga rally in October or Mahomes mom pops off on twitter that Jan 6 was a hoax etc
