Alright i am an avid bowler. I bowl league year round, have my own ball and bowling shoes. I watch PBA when i get the chance. Does anybody else bowl often or show the same interest in the dying sport that i do?

How many classic bowling shirts do you own? Do you carry your own bowling ball in a special bag with your name on it? Can you post a pic of your ball?

I BOWLED THIS WEEK!

I own a bedlam full tilt 4.0 which is made by columbia 300 (they don't make the ball anymore) and my bag is a two ball bag made by hammer (ball company) I only own one "classic" bowling shirt to speak and it's from my high school team. Nothing has my name on it. Except my towel and shirt.

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM!?

Everything ok TBT?

-
i bowled today and then took a four hour nap
-
Bowling shoes/going bowling was code for smoking weed when I was younger

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM!?
just saw this but are we the same person? We both bowl and talk software.

Weird that no one got that reference. I remember the day that happened it made the B block of Sportscenter that night, on a Sunday.
-
I used to bowl A LOT. Had a ball, shoes. The works, really.
In high school, I bowled at the state championships 3 times. In 2006 (i think) I finished 17th overall (638 series) and earned a spot on the All KC Metro 2nd Team and All Johnson County 1st Team.
High game ever was 279. Missed in the 7th frame IIRC.

i bowled a 54 and then a 169 last weekend, both career records for me

Heh. Would a nerd in high school have also finished second in the State Forensics Dramatic Interpretation category?
Didn't think so pal.

oh man, a Boeing alley at 2:30 on a thursday afternoon is a magical place. zero college grads here tho
-
The reason I bowl instead of golf is because the ball comes back to you LOL. But I actually golf a lot more than bowl but it's still a great joke.
-
that's pretty great 33
-
i like to do it but never do. high score is probably around like 150ish but I have no idea
-
The perfect game I had going into the 7th frame when gE.com destroyed BBBS was absolutely infuriating to super serious bowler guy in the lane next to us. MIR and Trim let him know about it the whole time too. That was a very fun afternoon.

i just bowled for three hours and am not sore (yet) fwiw - am v old tho

3 hours of bowling? So you must be at least a 5 drunk by now?

Bowl for kids sake, essentially strut n' cutters bowling with alcohol at that alley on North Rock Rd. Like everyone at the alley was there to have fun but of course we were next to the only bowling hardo in the place. The dude was getting annoyed with us having fun so it escalated to us openly mocking him including me doing extended dances like soulmate boy's crank dat after strikes. The dude eventually loosened up.

My forensics coach forced me to do Br'er Rabbit, at the time I didn't care, much, but now given the luxury of life experience and retrospect it pisses me off a lot even though he was well intended.

I can picture it; wasn't he bowling for that construction company and the bowling motivated us to do whatever it took to make sure gE and its 5 employees raised more money than their 40?
I can't remember getting pak'd because I thought I always had the kid at those things.

Crap. Well I did two (one sophomore year and one junior year) and I can't remember which one was the state one.
Anyhow, I did:
1. "Frozen" -- very creepy story where I played a Fake Sugar Dick (WARNING, NOT THE REAL SUGAR DICK!) pedophile who learns that what he's doing is wrong and kills himself. I THINK this one was the state one.
2. "Red God" -- Soviet sniper in WWII who has a god-complex about taking life and can't come to terms with civilian life after the war and yep, that's right, kills himself.
I was a complete stud at DI.
-
you guys ever been to a bowling alley with somebody who is an IRL great bowler? it's so weird. I always assumed bowling was strictly a get blackout side activity though I know there are or at least used to be professional bowlers. I was getting blackout at a bowling alley one time and this kid (like high school age) was bowling like near perfect games consecutively. he was bowling by himself though his mom (at least appeared to be his mom) was sitting behind him the entire time. also it was like 2 PM on a weekday. home schooled bowling freak kid who wants a shot at the title? he was incredibly annoyed by our group and moved down to the other end of the place.
-
only one bowler showed up between 2-5 yesterday and he had his own bag and ball and everything and I was like "oh here we go..." but every time i walked by him to buy another pitcher he seemed to be mostly sucky
-
Another good bowling joke I do is when I have a split and I throw it right between the two I turn around and put my hands up in the air and said "It's good!" Gets a pretty good response.
-
That kid probably has a Rick Steelsmith poster up in his room.
It's difficult for me to take someone seriously who takes bowling seriously. Bowling is roughly at the same level as darts or mini golf. Like just chill and pound some beers and have fun doing this hobby sport.

Oh that's pretty good _33. Whenever that happens to me I do an imitation of the Bob Davis "SWIIIIISH!!" call.

A couple of buddies and I were at a bar in Topeka years ago. We were playing pool and throwing darts. A couple of guys came up and said, "You wan throw darts for a pitcher?" We agreed. Two of us took them on and we won the first game. The next game, we were about to win, and then BEEP BEEP BOOP, they closed out everything and hit 5 bulls and beat us. This goes on for an hour and a half, with 2 of the 3 of us teaming up and almost beating them and then they'd beat us at the end. They hit everything they threw at all night. It was never more than pitcher, so it was cheap entertainment from our end and they were pretty good dudes.
We started harassing them for being hustlers and asked them at the end of the night how often they played and they said, "Ever-y-day. Next week is the state competition. We can basically hit everything we throw at 95% of the time." They said that they never take money from people unless somebody is being an bad person. They mainly just play for beers.
Like I said, we were having fun with them and we were all pretty hammered, so we decided to go play basketball at 1:30 in the morning. We told them where to meet us and we were shooting around when they pulled up. Instantly, one of my buddies starts shooting like Jamal Wilkes, but throwing laser towards the rim. My other buddy starts dribbling like he has never touched a basketball in his life. My first buddy throws up a laser guided brick from 17 feet that hits the backboard and drops through. He gets all excited and yells, "WOOHOO!"
I was cracking up. They shot a couple of shots and then we said lets play 2 on 2. We schooled them. They sucked at basketball and we were pretty good. They laughed. I wonder if those two guys won the state competition?
End of TRUE story.
-
Bar in Denver has a basketball goal. We do something similar and act like we're terrible shooters, then make pitcher/shots bets with people on a best of 5 or 10 or whatever free throw competition, and almost always win. It's fun

No kid and ever-y-one was super pak'd. That was when the pak'd out pic with the giant check was taken. The guy only seemed to loosen up when were were called up in front of all the other teams and congratulated on being the BBBS money raising ass kickers of all time. They had no idea of what to make of our giant foam board check tho.

first time seeing this thread. I used to be a p good bowler. Don't do it very often anymore so i would have to go 3 or 4 times to get back into form. Anyway, anytime someone (probably not good bowler) suggests "let's go bowling!" i am like hard pass b/c here's the thing, i know its nerdy but i'm good at it and i don't enjoy being meh at it. So no, i'm not going to use house shoes and throw a 120 with a house ball that doesn't fit my hand very well b/c that will be incredibly not fun for me. I also don't want to be the guy who brings his own ball and shoes and throws a 225 while everyone else is just happy to break 100.
-
hey BIG APPLE CAT i feel you on that, and am actually glad to hear someone is in the same boat, as i just went bowling with the fam recently.

I got back into it about a year and a half ago. Bought a new ball ([Storm Intense] [top of the line at the time]), shoes, bag -- all for about 350 bucks or so (i love telling that to golfers). Added a spare ball (storm ice) last fall for those pesky ten pins (which I'm converting at about 80-90 percent now).
Last summer I bowled in a league in olathe and carried a 214 average ( )-- top average in the league and the best i've bowled in my life. Bowled at Ward Parkway last season and went about 196 or so.
I LOVE competitive bowling again. I went to Ward Parkway last sunday and threw a 662 (18/33 strikes).
-
i did a work league a couple years ago and it was definitely more to be social than it was to be competitive - which is fine - but one night was so infuriating. The other team had such horrible etiquette to the point i was starting to think they were intentionally trying to mess with me. Even though each team only had 4 bowlers show up, they would like, just sit around when it was their turn and not bowl. I don't know that i would normally find this so annoying but when you have thrown the first 7 strikes it gets really annoying when you have to wait 10-15 minutes between throwing a ball. just really hard to keep your momentum. And you look around for the person who should be bowling and its not like they are being a social butterfly or are waiting in line at the bar. Nope. They're just sitting there, not even doing anything...just choosing not to bowl.
When i bowled in competitive leagues, it felt like the general rule of thumb was if someone has a perfect game going you don't do anything to mess with them. No mind games, you just let them do their thing. Like yes we are all competing against each other but we all want someone to have a perfect game. Or, at the very least, you don't want to be the person that was disruptive to someone who was en route to a 300.

I would agree, bowling competitive is a whole different animal. Any one can have a good night but I truly believe bowling a 300 is one of the hardest things to do in sports. So yeah alot of people out of courtesy don't eff with that person. If I'm neck and neck with you I might give you crap tho.

I have my own ball but never owned my own shoes. I don't mind playing with a house ball either! Makes the casual games more fun. For a special fun day you can both be kind of competitive/challenge yourself and also maybe entertain your fellow casual bowlers by not using your thumb with a house ball! The spin is hilarious!

Don't go anywhere without my shoes, I think they give you more of an advantage than a ball does.

i feel less like "that guy" bringing my own shoes than i do bringing my own ball. Partly b/c my shoes are just solid black so they don't look like clown shoes like typical rental shoes. also i think most people would give you a pass if you said you didn't want to wear communal shoes.
also my shoes slide the same ev-er-y time. house shoes you just never know.

I am just really bad at bowling. I don't know that I've ever scored more than 100 pts in a game.
Is this something that just takes practice, or do my abysmal scores indicate that I don't have "it" when it comes to bowling?
-

You probably need someone to teach you some basics and then practice. I'd guess you could score in the 100's pretty consistently with an hour or less of coaching - explain the footwork, where to stand, where to aim, and how to adjust where you stand based on how the ball is moving.
(note I was taught to pretty much never change where you aim, just change where you stand)

Those are all good points, another I'd add is to think about arm angle/the plane your arm moves through. Lots of people don't throw "straight" because they are unknowingly throwing the ball to the left or right simply because they pull their arms in (or out) during their throwing motion (and often using a ball that is too heavy "in to your body" or too light "out of your body"). Or they simply side arm it which is nearly impossible to keep the ball straight since you are wholly dependent on timing the release point.
Basically the plane the ball takes through the throw should be as "in line" with where the ball is going down the lane (like a pendulum in an old clock is a good visual of what your arm should be doing). It also helps to exaggerate the follow through a bit and pull your arm straight up so it goes through the vertical plane of the pin for example.
Then when you add the footwork/throwing location you simple go "left" or "right" by move left or right, not trying to change your motion at all.

what's the most impressive spare you guys have ever picked up? i've never picked up a 7-10. i've picked up the 6-7 a couple times, but as a righty i think the most difficult i ever picked up was a 4-10

I've picked up the ten pin a few times.
No I honestly don't recall. I imagine i've picked up the 6-7-10 before just because I've bowled thousands of games in my life, but I really can't recall anything. Certainly not a 7-10.

183, 183, 226 -- 592.
Really funky release my first two games brought a low strike rate, and missed a couple easy spares. Started out the third game with 6 of 7 so I eventually got it figured out. Had the oppo for the triplicate though!
Want to maintain a 200+ average this season. Starting at 197 isn't horrible.

not gunna lie i think i would have tried to intentionally get that last game 183 but only b/c its the first week and you're just setting averages. I assume this is a handicap league or is it scratch?

oh good no chance of infection then
but seriously I imagine most bowling alleys are pretty well ventilated from the smoking days and hand fans

Yeah, after I started out with xxx in the third game, i knew the 183 was likely out the door. At that point I was just trying to salvage 600.
league is handicap (90% of 210 I think?). league is sanctioned and i'm pretty sure averages carry over from last season, though I'm not quite sure how all of that works.

I think I sprained my left ankle when I planted. May finally be time to start working on sliding.
League starts tonight. My ankle is in OK shape.
Yeah, after I started out with xxx in the third game, i knew the 183 was likely out the door. At that point I was just trying to salvage 600.
league is handicap (90% of 210 I think?). league is sanctioned and i'm pretty sure averages carry over from last season, though I'm not quite sure how all of that works.
I start my league tomorrow and our averages (handicaps) from the previous season do role over for the first 3 weeks (to prevent sand bagging). So the 4th week you start with what your avg would have been after the first 3 weeks. We are also wearing masks, and each team gets 2 lanes with a group of 2 vacant between each team. Basically our 16 team league has the entire alley now.

Ahh that makes sense.
-
bowled like complete crap last night: 160, 204, 170 - 534.
Ball had no movement -- think something funky was going on with my release, and had a pretty pathetic strike rate. Shameful.
-
incorrect placement on the booze curve?

i bet sometimes they oil the lanes w/ a sport pattern instead of a house pattern just to take folks down a peg or two

high school BAC didn't really understand there were different oil patterns like i thought oil patterns were a standard thing and then the variations were just a product of how recently the lanes had been oiled or how the ppl before you re-distributed the oil. But i had no idea that there were just straight up different patterns so when they would use a sport pattern i was like man i am so bad at bowling now what happened? why do i suck so bad? no crisis of faith quite like unwittingly bowling on a sport pattern.
-
What is the difference in the patterns?
-
if the lanes are dryer on the outside and slicker in the middle (house pattern) then they are more forgiving...if you hang one too far outside the the dry boards on the outside will let the ball curve back toward the middle. a sport pattern has a pretty even oil distribution from left to right so if you hang one too far outside then it will just keep sliding.
basically, whatever your margin for error is on a house pattern...your margin for error on a sport pattern shrinks by probably like 90%
-
Did better this week, but lanes were much dryer. Threw about a 586 -- not where I want to be, but better.

Yes - that's perception exists among everyone. I remember watching PBA and thinking "jeeze...these guys are only throwing 220s -- that's a really good game, but it's not a REALLY good game"
Then I learned that the lanes I was throwing on were basically a par three course compared to the pebble beach the pros play on.
-
I had no idea, very interesting. Thank you for the explanation.

threw like a 530 lastnight
my release is broke

Sometimes I sub on my co-workers bowling team and WOW...I had no idea about the bowling league sub culture and its fascinating.
Bags to carry your multiple balls? CHECK
Decked out shoes? CHECK
Talk about different oil patterns? CHECK
Have to join some weird association where they track your scores even if your just a sub? CHECK
Everyone from every team knows each other because they have all bowled on the same night for like 20 years? CHECK
Its a blast and the people watching is top notch.
-
I'm a "Grab a house ball off the rack and fire it straight down the middle" type of guy but I usually score around 140-180.
-
ben ji i am legit impressed by anyone who can consistently throw a 150 with a house ball. if i throw a house ball i am terrible.

Oh 100%. I've tried explaining it to people before but it's tough. You did a really good job.
There are 2 or 3 guys in my league who absolutely lose their crap if things go sideways. Ball returns beware.
-
D-lew my advice to fixing your bowling release is to just got a little before league and just stand up at the line in the lane and just release the ball from there while slowly adding your approach back in.
This is what has always worked for me so maybe give it a try.
-
would 110% be in favor of a gE.c annual bowling championship at FF. also dunno if its just me but anytime i bowled at the union if i had one of those columns immediately to the right of my lane, even though my rational brain knew i wasn't going to bounce my ball off the column it got in my head and i would end up pulling b/c subconsciously i was telling myself "don't go too far right or you'll hit the column" but hey i'm a very silly boy.

I'm in the same boat, nothing worse than a pillar or a wall next to your lane. Would also love to bowl and pack at FF

gave my ball a hot soap bath the other night because i think it's become pretty impacted by oil and wooee mama did that make a difference. strike rate shot up like a rocket this week. my second game I ended with a 223 i think but i hit the pocket pretty cleanly on all 11 of my first balls. felt good again.
avg is hanging out at about 191 but there's a lot of room to grow if my ball moves like it did this week.

Did you ever play in a dart league in college? I've played in both and both are very similar in these aspects.

Threw a 724 lastnight -- 257 (with an open!), 245, 222. My first sanctioned 700.
I had a 502 after the first two games and knew I was still (barely) alive for an 800...Was perfect through 5 in the third and then the dream died in the 6th, as I missed a touch high and left the 4. Missed again in the next frame, leaving the 4, and biffed that spare short.
I got a shitload of strikes lastnight.

need a little insight on this, wondering what the steps you took to doing it or if I should just save the trouble and call up the proshop at little apple to have em roast it over night for me.

Maybe fattyfest needs a high stakes bowling element to it

My process was dead simple. I filled a mop bucket up in my bath rub with hot water and put some dish soap in there. Then put my ball in the bucket and soaked it for 20 minutes, rotating the ball some every 5 minutes or so. Then I took the ball out, wiped it down with a towel, and let it air dry over night (hard to get in the finger/thumb holes).
I didn't tape anything or remove finger tips or anything like that.

655 :ohno:
My first game was bad, 178. Two opens and not enough strikes. Bounced back with a cool 245 though the next game. :gocho:
I think i'm a scratch bowler in our league now.
-
Bowling has been #canceled the last two weeks because of weather. I did throw a 703 last saturday though, including a 278 (11x; 8/ in the 7th). So close. Someday.
-
I was in a league a while back, and watched a dude drink Hamm's beer through a straw and roll a 290.
It was amazing.

736 tonight. Struck 17 of my last 18

641. Will take.
BTW there's a guy in our league who broke his arm. Straight up has his left arm in a sling. Bowls anyway. Grabs his ball off the rack with one hand. Set himself, and cranks it.
I saw him throw a 690 series lastnight, with one arm. It was the most impressive thing I've seen in ~20 years of bowling.
-
644 last night. Yeoman's work.
I also bought new shoes today:

DQ what all do you keep in your bag? I haven't bowled in a league in years but i remember i always kept a rosin bag and a bottle of baby chowder. Although i didn't like getting my thumbhole drilled out so i used the baby chowder a lot more than the rosin. I've never used the wrist brace thing nor the towel with the handles a la big lebowski, i think i just threw a regular towel in there.

An inventory of my bag is as follows:
Balls:
Storm Intense
Storm Ice
Shoes
Brunswick Frenzy Bowling Shoes (blue) -- Will be replaced today with Brunswick Rampage (red/gray)
Microfiber Towel -- I don't think people really use the handled towels anymore.
I don't use rosin or baby chowder or anything like that.

when i was a kid Justin Hromek won the US Open and his local guy was Tom Warren who ran the pro shop where i did saturday morning league and Tom would just hang out in his shop watching the kids bowling so whenever you came in to his shop to get a ball he already knew how you rolled it and where to drill it, anyway one time i was in the market for a ball and he said "oh yeah Justin was in the other day and he decided he didn't want to use this ball anymore, it would probably be good for you" and i was like heck yes and that is still the ball in my bag and i'm worried one of these days i'm going to throw it and its just going to split in half because its so old.

lol that's aweosme. What kind of ball? I see that he won the US Open in '94. Ball tech has come a loooong way since then. And it's awesome because the most expensive ball out there is like, less than $300.

quantum proactive 2, same slate blue w/ yellow fingertip inserts. Also fun, there was a little 3/4" diameter hole bored out of the side and Tom explained to me that they do that at professional events to check and make sure the ball is legal.

Is it still actually a hole (i.e. not filled?)? If so, the USBC outlawed that in the last couple of years.

Last night I got my haircut and my barber and I got talking about bowling somehow. He said he used to average a 250. I called bullshit, but he maintained it was true.
I still don't believe him.

So fun little kansas bowling fact. Justin Hromek is now Circle High School’s bowling coach. I bowled against his son in state and of course he was an absolute stud. We all sat at the same table . This kid was bowling 700 series in high school. Him and his dad’s game were identical.

Those side holes were used to balance weight, etc. As DQ said the USBC outlawed them officially this past year, in an effort for 2 fingered bowlers to not have an advantage of 2 open holes. Now you have to have a finger in every hole, or your ball doesn't qualify. It has become a running joke in our league, that has now been overplayed.
BTW, I roll a Roto Grip UFO. It's a bit too much for me to handle. Used to avg a 210 with a Storm Virtual Gravity, and since I moved on to the UFO I have dropped to a 203. Rolled a 687 last night though.... just less consistent now.

Finished the season last night with a 641. Season avg will be about 201.5.

That's an enjoyable video for a lot of reasons.

That confused me yesterday. The little stat box at the bottom indicates the PBA tour average is 0.8%. If that means how often one picks up the spare in that situation, that’s 1 out of 125, which isn’t that mind-blowing to see happen. Maybe it meant how often a first roll results in a 7-10 split?
D-rew? Tin hat guy?

Only the 4th 7-10 spare conversion in the history of televised PBA bowling.

Yeah a few things:
1. 7-10 splits are pretty rare, and become extremely rare at the pro level. You just don't see it that often. So not very many opportunities.
2. Picking it up is pretty heavily reliant on luck. But obviously have to have the velocity and accuracy to hit the first pin in order to give yourself a chance. A little less than 1 percent at the pro level is about what I'd expect.
FUN FACT: The 7-10 split isn't the rarest pickup at the pro level. That distinction belongs to the "Greek Church" leave, where you have either 4-6-7-8-10. Or the 4-6-7-9-10. Basically three on one side, two on the other.

I know, but there was no context, especially given that it's a 1-125 shot to know if that's a product of making the shot, or rough ridin' up and leaving a 7-10 split to begin with, or bowling not being on TV.

-
Another fun fact, if you pick up a 7-10 split in a sanctioned league, the USBC will send you a commemorative towel. Teammate of mine picked one up a couple of years ago. Only one I have seen in my 30 years of bowling.

Well it happening on live tv is the oddest, because you have 3 rare things all coinciding: (1) bowling on tv; (2) leaving a 7-10; (3) picking it up.
In the macro, a pro leaving and picking up a 7-10 split isn't that crazy. But it happening on live TV is.
It would be like a triple play happening in playoff baseball. Not really all that many chances for teams to get a triple play to start with. Then actually converting when you get a chance is rare beyond that. It all occurring in the playoffs? Pretty unlikely!
-
T-Y, and congrats to the tv network.
-
watched some youtube video where they made a bowling robot so they could try to figure out the science behind picking up a 7-10 and they concluded that there is no reliable way to do it because the only way to pick it up is for the pin to careen off one of the surrounding surfaces so literally the only way to pick it up is to get a lucky bounce.
also in the vein of the baseball analogy, i learned the other day that while perfect games are rare...even more rare is the immaculate inning (as in the pitcher strikes out all 3 batters in 9 pitches)
I remember in the 2015 All Star game Jacob deGrom struck out the side in 10 pitches, threw 1 ball, so close.

That wouldn't be luck, it'd be hitting the pin at the right angle, speed, etc. to create that bounce.

Functionally speaking, luck. You've got to throw it "right" to give yourself a chance, but beyond that, you need a lucky bounce.
-
If one could throw it right, like as right and as consistently as the robot, there’d be no luck. Everything else involved is static, the only variable is the throw. Be as good as the robot, no self-limitations.

Did you read BAC's post? The robot couldn't pick it up every time.
My guess is because of extremely slight variance in pin positioning from the pinsetter and oil conditions on the lane.

What about the inner housing around the pins that the 7/10 pin must ricochet off of or whatever. Are we sure those are all absolutely the same and consistent from lane to lane, venue to venue, etc.?
-
Man, if there is one thing I have learned from being a random sub on a bowling team its that bowlers LOVE to talk about the oil conditions.
I had no idea that was even a thing but yes, its a thing and people love to chat about it.

Yeah, but I assumed the robot did it and they were saying no human could match it. Those other factors you mentioned would affect other rolls and pin placements too, so I guess evey bowling achievement involves some degree of luck.

They should be if they're part of the field of play, so to speak, at least I'm professional settings.

No. E.A.R.L.(the bowling robot) didn't pick it up every time.
Even if the conditions remained identical, you have a relatively enormous margin of error with respect to picking up a single pin (hit it just like, wherever, and it knocks down) than you would a 7-10 split (hit it at the precise angle and force so that the pin ricochets off one or more of the sidewall/backwall/ball and knocks into the other pin.
You're out of your element here, trim. It's commonly accepted that 7-10 (and a number of other "lateral splits" [term i just made up]) require varying degrees of luck.

Yes.

Everything except dead simple spares (where the margin for error is pretty huge), yes. I'm not sure if E.A.R.L. can bowl 300s consistently, for example. E.A.R.L. can consistently pick up a 5 pin or a 1-3 spare (for example) though.
-
Dude in my league bowled an 845 last night... 298, 279, 268. Was pretty insane to watch. I have 2 300s, but never been close to an 800 series. I think that is the pinnacle.

I mean, you can definitely set up EARL to throw the ball such that it hits the pocket at a 6 degree angle and theoretically that shot could be repeated every time...i'm sure they've probably tested it but i'm curious how often EARL can throw a 300, but i'd guess its upwards of 97% of the time

You can throw the exact perfect ball every time and still not get a 300, which is why it's pretty difficult. There is a lot that goes into the pin rack as well. If there is a dead pin, or if one is misaligned, etc. But I would guess if you are trying to test robot accuracy, you would make sure the rack is perfect every time as well.
-
plus they'd need to account for lane breakdown/transition too, unless EARL was throwing straight darts for the 300 every time.

Bill Moro is a legend.
-

3. The way it works is two teams bowl against each other on a night. One point is awarded for each game team total (i.e. the entire team's total vs. the other team's total for that game). Then, after all three, each team's total for the three games are compared, with another point being awarded for the winner there. So 4 total points a night are up for grabs (3 games, 1 "series"). I think most amateur leagues are handicapped. Handicaps vary, but it's generally some percentage (usually 80-90) of the difference between your average and some number (usually between 200-220). So if i'm in a 90% of 200 league, and I have a 190 average, my handicap is 9 pins.
That said, I've been bowling horrible lately. I'm a terrible bowler now.

That's a good start though... gotta set that handicap!
I am a 210 avg bowler, first week had a 545, last night 663.
DQ... what ball are you currently throwing?

Storm Intense, with a Storm Ice for the 6 and 10.

Getting things back on track. Threw a 662 (216 213 233) Monday. Really solid work out of me.
Our 4 man team threw a 2370 scratch series, which is pretty great for us. 2610 handicap series, which broke this season's record by 130 pins in our ~12 team league that's been bowling for about 25 weeks or so this season.
-
Realized I never put the bow on last season. Finished with about a 195. There was a stretch where I was bowling really bad. Had a week or two where I was sub 500 :o.
They switched up the oil at the lanes last year -- much wetter conditions. Retired the Intense and got the Astro Physix. That's been an adjustment for me because that sucker is a lot of ball, but if I can get it down the lane, it's pretty golden.
Started the new season lastnight. Threw a 664 (204, 237, 223). My second game I struck the first 5, third game struck the first 6. Could this be the year old DQ finally throws 12 in a row?

I've been having a really nice season so far this year. Average is up to about 207ish. Threw a 655 on Monday. Goal is to remain a "scratch" bowler in the league (>200).
Conditions are pretty dry through the first 6 week or so. I've resolved to just move over and throw it harder, which has helped with my strike rate quite a bit, likely because of the sharper angle and increase velocity. Team has been struggling some though.

671 - 202; 246; 223
Let the good times roll!!!
-
Had a few weeks off due to work and illness.
Back at it again lastnight with a very nice 644 series. Team took 3 out of 4.

What kind of steroids are you taking, @dlew?

760 tonight. 289, 247, 224.
On the 289, I struck the first 10. Second ball of the 10th, I can hardly stand. Legs are jello. Crowd behind, trying to catch a glimpse of immortality. I fire it down, BURY IT. And there it is, a tough luck, stone 8-pin. Heartbreak.
Had the 800 still in play through about the 5th frame of game 3. All in all, new high game, new high series. What a rush.
-
289! Wow!

663 lastnight. 175 (eek); Then a 235 and a 253.
-
636 lastnight. Nice number but a little disappointing given that I had a 460+ after two. Left a pocket 7-10 in my third and caught a few more tough breaks (including a missed 10 pin).
Thems the breaks!

Company bowling today at the local alley. It's apparently a big deal. The owner of the company shows like every other year and will bowl with us. Will be hilarious. It's also like a legit competition that they give big prizes for will report back with our stuff.
-
Finished the season at 202. Got the prize for high series (766) and high game (290).

Had perfection going until the 9th last night. Bad miss...hit way too light and left the 2-4-5 bucket.
One of these days!

i'm having a really quality season. Threw a 730 a few weeks ago. Threw a 680 last week. Averaging about 212.
