Combs did a solid job with it tbh. Kinda ballsy
i still struggle to come to terms with him covering this song and although the original is and always will be one of my favorites of all time, I can’t come to accept that he’s covered it and turn the channel when it comes on.
for the longest time I thought that the reason I didn’t like him covering it was because of some weird resentment I felt towards combs because I felt that he was taking something personal from tracy chapman and profiting from it.
this is a song about a poor kid forced into being an adult long before she should have due to her dad’s alcoholism, the middle of the song speaks to her hope for better, then as the song hits its last stanza, she as an adult falls in love with a dude who himself is an alcoholic and she’s forced to tell him to take the car and keep on driving.
what i think i’ve come to realize is that my resentment wasn’t because combs was taking her experience, but instead mine.
pretty deep crap and GO CATS, glad I finally figured this out
