I expect to have a double digit lead going into the half (thanks to a The Flush JR 3) as time expires, which grows to a 20+ point win. Fans rush the court as they should. This should set up the game at Phog to be for the regular season Dr Pepper.
Things that will happen:
Self gets a T
Dean makes an OK dunk, but still hulks out and crowd goes wild anyway
The Flush JR scores 25
SVG comments about the FKU chant
Mawien loses the ball in a very amusing fashion
-
Greg will be there with a brilliantly witty sign he snuck through security
-
if the cats win by anything less than 15 it will be a mild disappointment
-
The worst KU team in decades versus the best KSU team in decades. It better not be close.
-
This is basically the same post lineup that Mawien destroyed in the B12 tournament. I wonder if KU is actively game planning for him. lol
-
Austin Trice will be used to soak up the John Higgins foul onslaught in the first 6 minutes.
-
we are going to KICK their ASSES!!!
-
Greg will be there with a brilliantly witty sign he snuck through security
No sign this year unfortunately. Will have sign when we play KU at Sprint Center though.
-
We'll start out 3-20 from inside the 3 and 1-9 from 3 pointsville. We'll make N.C. State feel better when we finish with 22 overall points.

Go away mean person. We're pumping sunshine here.

Rumblings Nathan Powers may attempt to sneak into the game tonight ala Dave Portnoy at the Super Bowl.

we have seen this play out before
ku comes in, hobbled from cheating their asses of and also so injuries, proceed to wipe the floor with our faces
we make a late push and only lose by 7

i'm ready to watch a cats game go cats lets go

6 minute scoring droughts are not going to cut it guys. We really suck against this zone thing...

Needs more boos, students suck now

Woof

The zone is slowly breaking.

I didn't even know that Stan Van Gundy did games. Pretty awesome.

This is the shitty KSU I know and love

Not ready for the big time so far, but there is one more half.

KSU first 10 minutes: 26pts. Last 10 min: 4pts :'bye cruel world:
Zone and Oscar's lack of knowledge of how to attack one or inability to teach his players how. JFC, all the do is pass and don't even move the ball from side to side quickly enought to get the defensive out of position.
-
Yes, we need more penetrate and kick against the zone, but really you just have to make some shots. It's not 7th grade girls basketball so you're not going to get a bunch of high/low passes and layups. Most teams don't play 2-3 zone because teams can shoot. We need to hit some 3's.
Everyone chant: hit some 3's, hit some 3's, etc.
-
They should resort to transition basketball with Barry/Diarra taking the lead. Not even playing.

Yeah. The spectre of being forced to compete in the Big 12 with non-negligible impediments to cheating appears to be weighing them down bigtime.

Loved SVG clowning on all the charges

I will now love Carti forever. No matter what.

Also that was one dogshit KU team.

that was a pretty decieving outcome, I thought KU benefited from the whistle and got a lot of mileage from the gimick defense. The margin could have easily been 20

We really struggle against the zone with KU’s length and athleticism. Always do. I’m surprised Seff didn’t stick with it the whole game, but I don’t know crap about basketball.
-
Dumb move by Seff to go back to man.
Of course what's lost on Low BB IQ KU T-Shirt Fan Nation is the strategic nature of fouls and not the actual foul count.
Like clock work Mak had two quick fouls, you could have bet all the farms on that.

Self came into the doom with a far inferior squad and was within 2 points at the under 4. He coached his ass off. If he

You don't think that was a good warm up for Baylor? These Seniors are 3-3 vs Baylor and have 2 wins on the road in Waco. We'll be just fine.
-
We've been playing really well against the 2-3 lately. I think KSUW is right that we struggled against KU's zone more because of their athletes.
-
If these guys WTDD the rest of the season, we will be Big 12 Champs all by ourselves. Gotta WTDD, though.
-
Our defense was great. Crowd was great.
It's hard to win on the road in the big 12 without lottery picks against 3 and 4 year starters.

We lost to A&M about a week ago. KU has played the least amount of zone as anyone in the B12 and it gave us fits. We can certainly win, but there is also a lot of reason for concern.
I'm glad there is an extra day to enjoy the KU game a bit before they get back to work.
-
What a boon for P&L biz it’ll be if ku is a wednesday school this year.
-
No team should play us man going forward, but after half we started attacking the zone successfully. The hawks last night were just out manned and were going to lose no matter what as long as we figured out he zone, which we did.
Still, any team in this conference should play the zone and hope we can't hit anything. There will be a game where we can't like aTm.

Go Cats!

Great point. With how low Wednesday ticket prices are it'll almost be like Spring Break for SpringHillHawk.

So, should we now expect to win a Dr Pep?

I will now love Carti forever. No matter what.
Yes. Also can't believe Doc tried to take a charge. HE PUT YOU ON A POSTER JAMES.

Lol at self resorting to a gimmick defense

Wait, explain how going to an extremely successful zone defense that stymied our field goals for nine consecutive minutes counts as somehow being a “gimmick.”

Predominant coaching thought is it's a junk defense, or "gimmick". Something you need every blue moon but shouldn't be out with your main tools. Where does that thing always go? The junk drawer. A gimmick is a trick to use as needed.

Man K-State fans have really shown their asses this last 36 hours when it comes to zone defenses.

growing up a syracuse fan, i love a well coached, well executed match-up zone defense and would definitely run one in my program if i found myself coaching a p5 blue blood.
brandochav is right though in that a lot of coaches don't view it as a "real" defense compared to straight up man. the problem is that you need a certain athlete to primarily run zone vs man and at the college level, that's a big commitment.
-
Box and 1 is the main one people call a gimmick or junk defense.
Remember the UNLV ameoba defense? They were like the only team talented enough to pull it off.
-
bill self has run a triangle and two against us and also kentucky

The point isn’t whether zone is “junk,” the point is that Self was forced to use a defense he doesn’t like to use. A man to man is macho, and the defense has much more control as to whether the offense has success. For Self, playing a zone is basically an acknowledgement that they can’t stop us, and they have to hope we miss shots against a zone. Weber feels the same way. Both of them are very good defensive coaches, and both don’t like to play zone.
-
Maybe, but I still don't see anything that works as being a gimmick. It may be something they don't often use, or something that isn't seen as "manly," but eff...it worked. And therefore it was absolutely a valid defense and a smart coaching move. It's kind of similar to how I don't understand why some people see air raid offenses or trick plays in football as gimmicky: usually they're extremely clever plays that require tons of offensive know-how and superb talent to execute. There's a risk to them, and if it pays out in a reward then it was a smart coaching move and absolutely the right one. Sorry it wasn't straight up manly smashmouth football where you plunge a running back into the pile every down. :dunno:
-
man I'm getting p. butthurt about someone calling a zone defense gimmicky.

YES! It was a hybrid matchup zone and diamond and 1. We also ran this on my high school team because we were small but much more athletic than anyone we played at the 3, 4, and 5. It was awesome back then but in this era of spread floors and every team having 3-5 jump shooters, that defense would get completely shredded, it's just too much floor to cover.
-
Yea let's stand in one spot and barely move and take advantage of the fact that the basketball court is too small and everyone is big :jerk:
If the basketball court was a yard wider it would be the end of the zone defense.

earth to skinnybenny, nobody loved the jake waters long bombs more than i did
beautiful, entertaining, modern basketball is a mix of 3 bombs, ball movement, and sick iso moves. all of which requires space. not this rough ridin' 6th grade stand around with your hands up garbage, let's pass the ball around the top and maybe pass into the middle once in a while. it's not even that effective, oscar crushed ku's zone so hard they had to switch back.
-
I don't see how a bigger court would make zone less effective.
-
Uh, more spacing?
-
If anything, wouldn't the extra spacing make man to man more difficult?
-
Unless people get better at shooting super long 3's a wider court doesn't seem to do much. Maybe it'd be easier to pass into the corners, idunno
-
with a wider court they can get running starts and slash better. use your brain, idiots
(https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/newsfeed/001/432/869/220.jpg)
-
And Wade would have more space to actually run the offense from the elbow. He's the main guy to run the offense vs a zone, but when they clog up the middle, it's hard to get him open.
-
They should make the court a big square and baskets on the sides and each team can score in either of their baskets
-
Maybe add 5 players to each team on the court and another ball, man think how exciting that would be
-
What in the world is going on in here? Of course a larger court would be harder to defend. However, you don't need a larger court. The three point line was pushed back to help offenses, it spreads the offense more. This is the case particularly with zones because it enlarges the space between the guards which opens up a driving lane. If you decided to go to a 3-2 then you're giving up the corner three which is the easiest shot for a jump shooter.
-

Against man defense, sure. Not with a zone packing the paint.
-
I'm not a basketball guy so I'll take your word for it, but my thinking here is basketball has a fairly defined "scoring" range and the zone defends that range, not the full court. Widening the court doesn't make a larger scoring range, unlike, for instance, hockey where you can score from basically anywhere on your half of the ice. But I'm sure there are other factors I'm not accounting for.
-
Yeah, if you want the zone to go away, make the court smaller. Teams would constantly use full court man pressure to take advantage of the lack of space.
-
They should make the court a big square and baskets on the sides and each team can score in either of their baskets
to add to that, squares are the purest shape (as far as rectangles go) which makes this the purest form of basketball.
-

Up top, yes there isn't really much more space to defend, although the three point line getting moved out did absolutely spread the zone out and made for s larger gap between the guards. However, widening the court would absolutely extend the floor in the corners and would spread the wing defenders too. That scoring range could go well beyond what it does now, in the corners.

Don’t think Bill Self cares if it’s beautiful or entertaining if it holds the other team scoreless from the field for nine consecutive minutes. :dunno:

Ksu was opposite of scoreless when oscar broke down the zone. I prefer a more watchable version of basketball, but that's just me.

Speaking of basketball rules.
When my mother was a high school basketball stud, they played 6-on-6! But like, 3 girls from each team would always be on one end of the court, and 3 girls from each team would be on the other. So 3 would always be on defense and weren't allowed to shoot, and 3 were always the offensive players.
I'm not completely sure about all the rules, but I've always enjoyed hearing the stories.

Was your mom a James Harden type or more Rudy Gobert?

Harden. Definitely when it came to getting buckets, but there was a lot more passing involved as well.
