I love this kind of weather.  Lived in kansas/oklahoma my whole life, and the storms we get are awesome.  I've honestly only seen a tornado once in my life, and that was when I was 4 years old.

I was planning on going to Manhattan tonight.  May not happen if the weather keeps up.  I love watching it, but I'm not driving across I-70 in it.

been getting freezing rain/hail here in Hays for two hours now.  I've lived all over this country and go through real withdrawls in areas that don't have our "type" of thunderstorms, eg Oregon.   I'm an chaser, not the pro type, and have gone out three times in the last two years, saw three.  I won't drive to find them, they have to be relatively close, say within half an hour for me to get out.

i remember my brothers freshman year....i was in like 5th grade..it was around...89'...

there was a tornado in manhattan the night we dropped him off. we had to go to some super market for safety.

i ended up eating my weight in tenderloin.

Yeah, it is getting damn nasty in Hays, and I have to go to the Q to watch the game.  At least it isn't far from my house.

On that note.  I hate Hays.

You're ahead of me, phreak. I turn 30 next week and have never seen one.  Not the kind of person who hides under a blanket in the basement either.  Seen rotation a few times but nothing ever happened.

Speaking of Hays, when I lived out there a couple years ago I saw something I thought I'd never see outside of a rain forest.  Ended up being the most rain one storm ever produced in Hays, 8".  It started when I was in the grocery store.  Started to go outside and it was coming down so hard I thought I'd wait it out.  20 minutes later it showed no signs of letting up so I made a dash.  I was drenched by the time I made the 50 yds to my car.  Good thing I didn't wait as it poured as hard as I've ever seen it for the next 4 hours.

Took a walk after it let up and down the street from where I lived there was a 2 or 3 block area that is separated off that is set aside as a low area in that part of town and a guy keeps a couple horses in there.    There is a pond at the end of block near the main street that normally sits 10-15' below the street, which also acts as a dam for the pond.  That pond normally is about 30-40 across.  After this storm it covered nearly that whole 2 or 3 block area.  Only the emergency control overflow which was designed to have water spill over the top of it if it got too high kept it from flowing over the street/dam.  Absolutely incredible storm.

crazy rain
Biggest rain storm that I experienced was in Manhattan a couple of years ago.  Started out with a tornado warning for about 45 minutes to an hour.  There was a torrential downpour that just kept coming.  Going 20 feet would get you soaked.  Thurston street was just covered with water instead of it being relegated to the sides of the street.  The damn storm kept up like that for a good 3 hours.  It was pretty damn crazy.

Ah, the Q.  Only went in there twice.  Will always hold the sweet memory of being the place where I watched the '03 CCG.

how can I insert a pic?

I'm only going to explain this once so pay attention.

1. Open the cupholder/cd player thing that comes out of the front of your computer box.

2. Fold up the picture and place it in the cupholder.

3. Close the cupholder. If it doesn't want to shut, push really hard with your hand.

4. PRESTO! Picture time!

A real Kansan seldom sees a tornado.  They are smart enough to get to shelter when they may be close.  A real Oklahoman hides under his trailer house.

It's funny you say that.  I remember my frosh year at K-state, a tornado warning came over Manhattan.  All of the out of state people freaked out, and the entire dorm had to go to the basement.  You could tell the difference between the out of state residents and those that had lived in the midwest their whole lives.  The ones that had lived in the midwest were outside playing around hoping to see the tornado.  The out of state guys were hiding under tables in the basement in the fetal position.

I was hanging out at the Q and I think I met the same guy as you.  I was pretty happy that he was going to kstate

About the tornadoes.  I've lived in Kansas my entire life and I've never been close to one.  When other people are freaked out, I would be looking for the damn thing.  I really want to actually see a tornado for once in my life.   Not just hear the sirens.  Tornadoes are overblown because they only cut out a very small swath of land instead of affecting 100s of miles of land like a hurricane
