Chris Level on Tech talk apparently spoke to an Alamo Bowl representative today. What they told him was that they were basically considering 3 Big 12 schools: Texas Tech, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State. Missouri is not being considered by the Alamo Bowl. If Okie State beats Okie U this weekend, then they will have a good chance of going to San Antonio. If they lose, they will no longer be considered, and it will come down to Tech and K-State. The Big 10 representative will either be Minnesota or Iowa. Probably Minnesota considering they beat Iowa.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

If it comes to that, maybe we can arrange for a Huggins vs Knight battle on a neutral court to see who goes.

Of course all this hinges on the Gator using their once in a lifetime pick to get the Sooners.  I think that is likely which will really upset West Virginia/Big East fans.

Texas Tech is another one of those 7-5 (4-4) teams. They were by no means "hot" at the end of the season (trading "L"'s and "W"'s during the entire second half of the season - they did win their last). They lost all of their big games (at tcu, to Missouri, to Texas and at Oklahoma) this season. We finished the season by winning 3 of our last 4 (including a win over Texas). I know Texas Tech is in Texas but there's no justifiable reason for them to pick them over us.

Plus I gotta believe our fans are eager to travel to a bowl since we haven't been in one since the 2003 season. :hope:

Dec. 3rd or something.

I agree its really probably between us and OSU, but they included Tech for some reason.  I'm sure they'd love our 20K fans staying in hotels and spending money for several days.

considering how much nebraska fans made of this game last year, it would be like the national championship for us this year.  i hope we get picked.

Wow, with that loss I thought we would def be out of contention for the alamo. I had all but conceded a trip to the insight bowl (they would be more than ready to snatch us up). However, the alamo is a much better bowl on espn with a big 10 school. We owe them ('98 Purdure and '03 OSU).  The next 2 wks are gonna be killer.

None of the projections have had us in the Alamo all season.  I'd think at least Maisel would have gotten wind of something.

I'm rooting for mizzou this weekend and if they win and get the alamo over us but keep ku out of a bowl game then I will have a happy holiday.

If the Alamo can't get a TX school, they want K-State since they'll bring fans and $$$ to offset their lack of corporate title sponsor.  Insight wants K-State for the fans and they think K-State is a good story in college football this year (bowl eligible with first year head coach).

Alamo Bowl spokesman Rick Hill said when the selection committee met Monday morning, Texas Tech and Kansas State emerged as favorites. Hill said things could change if Missouri and Oklahoma State win this weekend, but that K-State and Tech are at the top of the list. Hill said much of that is based on Kansas State's win over Texas and Texas Tech's win over Oklahoma State.

Fans may impact Red Raiders' bowl options
BY DON WILLIAMS | AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

The perception of Texas Tech's fan enthusiasm might go a long way in determining where the Red Raiders spend the postseason.

The Alamo Bowl will spend this week and next week trying to gauge whether Tech or Kansas State, both 7-5, is a better fit for the Dec. 30 game in San Antonio. Fan interest will be a key consideration, according to Rick Hill, the Alamo Bowl's vice president of marketing and communications.

"We're focusing on doing our due diligence with Texas Tech and K-State,'' Hill said. "We want to see how buttoned up they are. Have the schools gotten a feel for their season-ticket holders? Can they give us some guidance on how excited they are to travel?''

Hill said the Alamo Bowl's experience with the two teams was fantastic during their most recent appearances. Hill called Kansas State's 1998 game against Purdue "one of the most competitive instant classics of all-time.'' He said Tech's turnout for the 2001 game versus Iowa "was as good travel as we've seen to the Alamo Bowl from any school.''

Now, however, there is a question about each program based on recent circumstances. For Kansas State, how fired up are Wildcats' fans after last weekend's 39-20 loss to Kansas?

"Is some of the bloom off the rose, now that they dropped a rivalry game?'' Hill said.

As for Tech, Alamo Bowl officials wonder whether enthusiasm was dulled by the Red Raiders not having a strong follow-up to last year's nine-win Cotton Bowl season.

"Is the enthusiasm there, when they were talking BCS at the beginning of the season?'' Hill said.

Tech or K-State are likely to get the nod over Missouri (7-4), Hill said, "just because (the Tigers) are more of an unknown.

"They haven't been to our game,'' he said. "They don't have a travel history to our game or (a bowl) above. They were a team that started out quick, and don't have that really signature win that would help them. Our fans have probably seen them very little down here in San Antonio. Games they have seen them, (such as) against A&M, they've unfortunately lost.''

The Alamo Bowl could have a Big 10 representative as early as today, Hill said. The choice is expected to be a 6-6 team, Iowa or Minnesota. The Golden Gophers beat the Hawkeyes 34-24 on Saturday.

On the Big 10 side, the Alamo Bowl's choice is one slot lower this year than in the past. Under a new four-year agreement, the Alamo and Champs Sports bowls will share the fourth and fifth selections from the Big 10, with the Champs Sports getting fourth pick in 2006 and 2009 and the Alamo getting it in 2007 and 2008.
