Big 12 is placing a deadline for Missouri and Nebraska for when they have to decide.

Report: Huskers, Mizzou face ultimatum

The Big 12 has drawn a line in the sand for at least two member schools.

The conference, amid a chorus of story lines involving Pac-10 and Big Ten expansion, has imposed a deadline of Friday for Nebraska and Missouri to state their intentions on whether they intend to bolt for the Big Ten, with the possibility of an extension for a decision by next Tuesday, The Austin American-Statesman has reported, citing two sources.

The Big 12's university presidents decided on imposing the ultimatum, two highly placed officials within two of the conference schools said, according to the newspaper.

"Nebraska has until 5 p.m. on Friday to tell us what they're going to do," one school official said, according to the The American-Statesman. "The same deal for Missouri. They have to tell us they're not going to the Big Ten."

A Dallas Morning News report also cited a deadline for the Cornhuskers but said it was within two weeks.

A political figure connected to Texas told The American-Statesman: "I know the war drums are beating. This is way beyond gossip."

Missouri declined comment to the Columbia Daily Tribune of Missouri.

"There's nothing we have that's different than anything we've said previously," Athletic department spokesman Chad Moller said, according to the newspaper.

Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne, speaking to Lincoln Journal Star, said he had no knowledge of any Big 12 deadlines.

"I really don't know what the final parameters are," Osborne told the newspaper. "I really can't comment."

Osborne told the Journal Star there was an agreement put in place at the Big 12 meetings in Kansas City, Mo., last week that "[conference commissioner] Dan Beebe and [Texas president] William Powers would do the speaking."

Beebe said Friday he is "comfortable" the league will remain intact.

Beebe said a "process" had been put in place by Big 12 presidents to ensure the long-term viability of a conference that has greatly increased revenue for its members, but still not kept pace in television dollars with the other big leagues.

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott, speaking at meetings in San Francisco, laid out several scenarios Friday to its schools' athletic directors, one of which would include adding six Big 12 schools, with Texas among them.

"I've talked to the Pac-10," said the Big 12 school administrator who spoke to the Austin newspaper. "There is an invitation. When it comes, it'll come fast."

On Sunday, talking after the close of the meetings, Scott said no final decision had been made whether to expand. Earlier in the day, he addressed the chancellors and presidents about possible expansion and was given authority to move ahead without having to go back to the board for approval.

The Big 12 presidents are scheduled to meet again in October. It could hardly be longer away than February, when they meet just before Beebe begins negotiations on a new cable deal with Fox.

"I am comfortable," Beebe said as the Big 12 meetings wrapped up Friday. "There's still a process we're going through but based on the conversations we had I think we're in a very good position."

He would not discuss how the process will keep the Big 12 intact.

"The process that has been set is firm. But I'm not going to engage in what that is," he said.

As a sales pitch to keep the league together, Beebe spent the week explaining that he expected huge increases in rights fees from both Fox and ESPN. Unfortunately for those wanting to keep the Big 12 intact, its more lucrative contract with ESPN runs through the 2015-16 academic year.

The greatly staggered contract dates are not working in the Big 12's favor as it seeks to keep up with other leagues.

"We have had analysis and projections that look like we're going to be every bit as well compensated in the future," Beebe said.

Under their present television deals, Big 12 members received between $7 million and $10 million each last year, depending on how many appearances each school made. The Big Ten, enriched by its Big Ten cable network, distributed some $22 million to each member last season.

Information from The Associated Press and ESPNDallas.com was included in this report.

Ok, but not seeing any consequences if the deadline passes or if nubb or Mizzou say "Sure we are in the Big 12" but bolt if Big 10/11 offers later.

Maybe implied consequences of the six to join the Pac-10 if the deadline passes ?

It is going to be interesting regardless what happens.  I've got a feeling KSU will be hosed if the Big 12 does break up.

I love the smell of peat in the evening.  That smell, you know that earthy smell...  Smells like...whisky !

OK, I stated the obvious !

OTOH, maybe being in a Non-BCS conference may seem to suck right now, but who knows ? It might be better to be in the Mountain West or other conference.  It would be kind of refreshing to disengage from nubb, mizzou, the tejas schools, etc...

Ok, you can fire away now...

Personally, I'd prefer the 'Cats in a more western conference since it'd be closer to me.

The writing is on the wall that the Mountain West will graduate to BCS status before long anyway.

Expanding on Charlie's point, Everyone needs to calm down.  K-State will be fine.  We're far from becoming the next big thing in the missouri valley conference.  Understand that if the Big 12 blows up, there is an opening for a 6th BCS conference.  Either we invite several MWC schools to fill out the new BIG 12 while maintaining BCS status, or we join the MWC which, being the strongest non-bcs conference, is next in line to fill the position.  Either way, we have an easier route toward a BCS game.  With the addition of Boise State to the MWC to make a total of 10, we just have to make sure K-State and ku get the slots instead of Baylor and Iowa State.  Does this make sense?  Any questions?  Any flaws in my logic?  There.  Problem Solved.

i hope so too. but i wouldn't mind losing missouri...this whole ordeal has brought me to the realization that ku fans are correct in saying missouri has a delusional sense of self importance.  they've only been good for about 4 years now, and before that, when they were a 'basketball school' they were mediocre.  So lets let missouri go and fill them with someone with realistic expectations.

so i was watching espn earlier today and it seams that if the Big 10 offers Notre Dame more than likely they're going to accept so then if notre dame accepts then they wont need to offer missouri and nebraksa. to then it all depends on the pac 10 and what texas wants to do. b/c if the pac 10 isn't going to offer the other big 12 south schools if texas isn't interested. but i think going back to the whole notre dame thing if they join the big 10 and missouri and nebraska have to stay or dont get offered that texas is going to stay too, then so will the other big 12 south schools plus colorado.

so hopefully the big 10 offers notre dame and they accept.

The New Big 12 / 16 - Assuming NU and MU go to the big 10 and the other six go to the Pac 10.

I propose that the Big 12 offers to expand on the 4 remaining teams.

Big 12
  • ku
  • KSU
  • ISU
  • Baylor - I'd rather dump them but they have rich and powerful alums.

Mountain West
  • Utah - If the Pac 10 goes for 6 Big 12 teams, Utah is stuck in the Mountain West
  • BYU
  • tcu
  • UNLV
  • Colorado State
  • New Mexico

Big East - Still the worst BCS conference
  • Louisville
  • Cincy

Conference USA
  • Memphis
  • Houston - $$$$$

A-10
  • Xavier - Puts them in the same conference with thier real rival (Cincy) and props up the conference as a basketball power

WAC
  • Boise State

Alternates

  • Air Force - Decent football and basketball on occasion
  • Wichita State - Pitty Invite
  • Southern Illinois - For all the Mizzou talk, SIU has a large Saint Louis following
  • Wyoming

boise state and byu are the two best additions.  People have come to really know boise state on the national level and there are enough mormons cheering for byu spread all over the place that a conference could get the best tv deals possible - considering the situation.

also, that would be pretty funny if notre dame finally accepts the invite and the big 10 stops at 12.  all this heartache for nothing and then the sudden sweet relief.  but at least we would know how vulnerable we are and which schools are the traitors - (helps us plan for the future).  Cole, I really hope this is the case.

not only is the mountain west thinking about offering Boise State, but now they might offer Colorado as well.

Good logic but there is one flaw.  Conference invites are all about football.  The MWC will get AQ status shortly without ku or KSU.  The Kansas schools would help in basketball, but that is second fiddle to football.  If the MWC were to add Boise State to ensure AQ status in football, that leaves 2 slots assuming they want to go to 12 teams.  They can choose from the 4 leftover Big XII teams, Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State.  None of these schools bring ANYTHING to the table in football.  Three of them have been cannon fodder in the pathetically bad Big XII North and the other is the doormat of the South.  The MWC already has enough weak football programs in Wyoming, SDSU, and UNLV.  They don't need any more.  They would probably be better off with top teams from the WAC or C-USA than any of the "leftover 4".

Misery's not going anywhere. The Big 10 never wanted them - misery just wanted to be wanted.

Nuhbraska is the only school seriously thinking of leaving. So, if they go, that's one school. We simply replace them.

Maybe Nebraska will pull a Jack Hartman or a Dana Altman.  I think they are making a mistake.  However, I have brothers that are Nebraska fans and they think that the rest of the Big 12 have been picking on Nebraska, so they are fine with the move.
