Here's what it sounds like to me.
Leach has an ego, he probably got tired of all the Bull$hit with the James Clan, and he thought he'd be teaching the kid a lesson once and for all. The problem is, like a lot of people with Leach's level of intelligence, they don't use common sense . . . you don't get into a pi$$ing match with a kid whose dad works for the WWL.
What Leach should have done after it started to blow up a little was sit down with the administration and the James', explain his frustration, apologize for what he did, and then lay it down that he wasn't going to put up with helicopter daddy and his malcontent little pi$$ant son anymore . . . something has to change.
Instead, just like Mangino, he let his ego get in the way. The seeking of an injunction to coach in the bowl game left Tech with only one way to go.
