How safe are torrents?

I have friends who say they have downloaded tons of stuff with no problems, but idk. Seems risky.

Would like to use them but I'm  :ohno: about getting lots of spyware/trojans/other bad internet stuff

Anyone used them before? Are they legit?

    I'm with Coco.
They're safe depending on where, how and what you download.

What will you be using them for?

Pretty much.

Stick to websites that require you to log in, like demonoid or torrentbytes.net.  These are all pretty safe.

Isohunt, Piratebay, btjunkie...all very dangerous.  Lots of antipiracy groups that record information of people who are downloading/seeding on those three specifically.  Many of them will turn you in to your ISP.  Most of them just ignore those groups, but Cox doesn't.  Cox will shut your internet off every time they catch you.  Third time they catch you they won't turn it back on.

That's pretty much as severe as the penalties get though if you're just downloading.

Pretty much only using it for music. Maybe a sweet program every once in a while.

And I don't have COX, so it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the help.

Anyone know any torrent program thingys that work on a mac?

Now that's how you get out a f***ing blood stain.
hbo had cox shut down my internet connection for downloading entourage.  would call them up after deleting the file and they would start it back up no prob.  basically move the files from the place you downloaded them to and don't share them.  you should be fine.

it's blocked at work but i think this is the site where i always start: http://torrentz.com/

if you download a file and it asks for a password.  you more than likely didn't want that file in the first place.  read comments before downloading to get an idea of if it's a good file.

Has nothing to do with if you keep the file or move it or trash it.  It's all about the traffic on the line.  Once it is through they could care less if you have it on your computer or not.  Cox is not the sole culprit either.  All major carriers are in bed with the RIAA/MPIAA.  Use Peerguardian while downloading.  Don't seed once download is complete (unless it's something I want).  Someone I know has downloaded tons, TONS, of movies, tv shows, music, programs, etc. and nothing has ever happened.  Piratebay is all they ever use.  It has reviews from people that have downloaded the same file below each link that say if it is quality/safe/etc.

what he said.

i like torrentz.com cuz it shows all the different sites you can go to.  i usually go to piratebay but sometimes they won't have what i'm looking for.  torrentz list all the torrent sites available for the torrent you are searching for.  seedpeer.com is ugly but gets the job done and is usually the one i select if piratebay isn't available.

    I may be full of sh*t, but i won't be de-turd.
I agree with everything that has been said. Torrents are a lot safer than using Limewire IMO. Just be smart. If you are looking to download a movie (750 MB) and it says the file size is 165 KB, you obviously know that it is a virus. I've rarely had any trouble with infected movies....its always been programs and cracked serial keys...watch out for those and have a good antivirus/malware program ready.

People who are seeding are def the most targeted.  But I've had friends who have been 'busted' (aka internet shut off for a few hours) for downloading alone.

SD is right on about peerguardian.  It will prevent a LOT of unfriendly IP addresses from obtaining information about what you're transferring.

Using forced encryption(utorrent) and randomized ports will keep your ISP off your back.

If you use peerguardian, forced encryption, and stick to members only sites, you basically have nothing to worry about.  Would still stay away from piratebay though..especially considering the lawsuits lately..

Music is by FAR the biggest risk in downloading

As for demonoid half the stuff on there is from public trackers anyway, which ruins the whole point of running a private site

Have a MAC and use Vuze to download old movies without any trouble. I stay away from the new releases and buy them if I like them. Like Role Models for example.

Some older movies I didn't have but wanted to watch as an .AVI was Rounders and Boondock Saints. Great flicks.

I stay away from all new music releases. Just buy it if you like it. $10 for an album of an artist you really like is worth it imho. If you want something oldschool and you don't know of anyone who has the .mp3's THEN YOU NEED MORE GEEK FRIENDS.

With most torrents....get on the thing, get what you need, log off and don't seed. Otherwise, its always going to be somewhat of a risk to download anything as anyone can see your IP address, even with a fancy firewall and cloaking software.

Most private trackers you have to seed.

IP is universal..you might be able to be less spied on w/ a mac only tracker, but it won't save you if someone spots you on there and writes down the IP.  Other than that, you are right on ;)

download opera for mac then use piratebay your transfers will show up through opera then after you are done downloading you can stop sharing the files. stop being such a vag and start downloading already.
also when using TPB the doodz with skulls by there names are usually the safest. you'll figure out what files are safe though by reading comments etc.

This vag doesn't want million of trojans traipsing around his computer. So suck it.

their sites still up as of now, at least the registration page. I did read an article that said something about them being shut down in the Holland or something, but I think they are hq'ed out of Canada now.

piratebay is pulling a napster pretty soon.  were raided by the police, put on trial, and owners sentenced to jail.  were bought out by another company and plan to turn into a legit media buying website.  someone will have to pick up the slack, I think piratebay hosted like 90% of the torrent trackers out there.
