Sounds like it was found by KDOT, ironically some of the same people I used to work with.

The trooper was an ass.

I may get billed for the bomb squad.

I'm thinking of calling the newspaper so at least I can get my 5 minutes of American Idol fame out of this.

As Achmed the Dead Terrorist (Jeff Dunham) says, "Silence!  I kill you!"

Why would you get billed?  Did the box say "Warning: Bomb Inside!!  Allah al Akbar!!"  The state doesn't need to bill you for their own paranoia.

I know a few cops that are ok, but I don't interact with them on a "professional level."

I discovered long ago that you can accomplish alot more by treating people with respect and dignity. Unless, that is, they act like total dickweeds, then game on.

I'm not really surprised by it, especially since it was a bomb squad guy.  I mean, this is a guy that goes around thinking anything sitting out in public could kill him, from mattresses laying in the median that blew off of someones van to a napkin blowing in the wind.  I'd hate to have a job that left me that high-strung.

They X-rayed the container and did not see anything hazardous inside, they blew it up anyway....

These are the kids that went nuts on 4th of July, then found a job that actually paid them to keep blowing things up.  I can see the conversation now.  "X-Ray is clear.  Dang...  We did drive all the way out here.  Maybe just to be sure..."

I use a garmin 60csx.

Nice.  I think the 60csx is actually better than the new Colorado and Oregon models.  Better battery life, precission and reliability.  You can get a new one for under $200 online.

Good luck with the cop.  What a prick.
COMPLIANCE:  This post is more than "a line or two" and not just a "clever link to right-wing blogs" and, therefore, fully complies with PCR's stringent posting requirements.

The under $200 are probably either refurbs, which I don't trust, or stolen and resold.

There are stories like that all the time.  Technically, it's against gc.com policy to place a cache anywhere near what could be construed as a terrorist target (rest areas don't count).  Schools and bridges are included in that list, but I've found quite a few near bridges - not so many near schools.

Seriously though, why a rest area?  not exactly an elite geocache locale.

Rest areas are nice locations for caches.  As a traveler, it's good to have a quick stop to pee and cache, hopefully not in the same place.  There are quite a few creative caches placed in rest areas, most of them quite a ways from the pee shack.  The one I had blown up was clear at the back of the rest area, probably 100 yards from an well traveled area.

While rest area caches aren't must-see caches, they are solid, well placed caches for the most part.

Sounds like a good serial killer hangout spot.

As long as it's not a tank that's on patrol in Baghdad, it's ok.  Military equipment on display in parks are very popular places to hide caches.  Sometimes they can be quite tricky to find.

Serial killer yes, but serial bomber/terrorist - no.

Try train cars on display.  Can be 2 or 3 times as big with far more places to hide.

If there's anywhere I'd like to spend more time in my life, it's a highway rest area.

this emoticon clearly comes from a rest area experience  :'byecruelworld:

Most rest areas in this state are actually quite large and some even have trails.  I believe all have picnic shelters.

Is that what those big smelly ponds are?  Ugh... that may not have been a fish I cleaned and ate.

It still smelled like a fish, didn't it?
