GARDEN CITY, Kan. – This was supposed to be his year.
Maurice Greer had big expectations this season. After rushing for 562 yards and five touchdowns as a freshman, Garden City (Kan.) Community College running back Maurice Greer had
been tabbed as one of the top runners in the junior college ranks heading into his sophomore season, but his dreams of having a monster season can crashing down before they could start to be fulfilled.
Greer, the former four-star running back that was ranked as the top player in Colorado in 2005, will miss his sophomore season at Garden City because he's been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
"He had a testicle that got smashed," Broncbuster coach J.J. Eckert said. "So they had to go do emergency surgery to fix it. They go and remove it, and as they remove it they found cancer in the testicle. They go back and have another emergency surgery to work on that.
"And now he's a guy that's going to have to go through nine weeks of chemotherapy."
The good news is the cancer was caught early on. The bad news is that he'll have to miss the season likely because of it.
