http://www.kansascity.com/sports/story/746016.htmlOn the one hand, the Saints have veteran Martin Gramatica, the former K-State kicker. On the other … Taylor Mehlhaff, the first kicker drafted last spring.
“Martin has been consistent,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “When we brought him in last year, he came in in a tough situation and did a good job.”
Gramatica made all five of his field-goal attempts and all eight extra points after Olindo Mare went down with an injury. But the prospect of a strong young kicker tempted the Saints in the sixth round.
Mehlhaff has hit booming kickoffs during practice; however, he was less consistent in the Saints’ opening preseason game in Arizona last week. He hit his only field-goal attempt.
“For the most part, for the rest of my career, I’m sure I’ll be competing with guys younger than me, but that’s fine,” Gramatica said. “I feel better now than I have in the past few years. I worked out hard in the offseason, so I feel really good.”
