Geographically , what is the nicest state in the country?

Kat Kid: As Chance will tell you when he moves, there, there are parts of Hawaii that are complete crap.  I've talked to teachers on some of the non-tourist parts and their students live in dilapidated tent cities.  Parent contact is nonexistent, because nobody has a phone.  You have to walk down to tent city and find their correct column and row if you want to talk to parents.  I don't doubt that most parts of Hawaii are beautiful, but it's not all paradise.  There is some extreme poverty amongst the natives there.  

I'd say Oregon would be the nicest state in the country geographically.

And waks, Austin is not full of Texans.  Austin is full of cool people who happen to be unfortunate enough to be born in Kansas so they move to an oasis in the middle of the state and nobody mentions the surrounding 800 miles out of complete shame.

I would hate living in NYC.  Cost of living is a bitch too.

Better cities to live in?  Chicago, Milwaukee, Austin, Denver, Miami.

If money weren't an issue then NYC is the best city. No contest.

I don't have any idea for Milwaukee and I've never been to Miami but all accounts say it sucks.

You've got Miami all wrong.  It is a great, great city if you know the where's and what's.  Stay away from the fogies, hit the beach, hit South Beach, walk around, enjoy the sun, grab a cab ride with some Dominican or Cuban dude and have them take you to where they eat lunch or to Lil Havana.  It is great.  It is a South American/Carribean city in America.  It is awesome.  If you don't know a little Spanish/can't distinguish between Mexicans and Cubans, you would hate it.

Portland (don't know never been), Boston I like but it is a little too stereotypical.  I would prefer Vermont if I was going down that path and take the slightly more rural but still within striking distance thing over the Westchester/Cambridge non-stop township clusterfrack.

Seems like we're about on par. I probably wouldn't want to live in NYC either, at least not for much longer than college or grad school.

NYC is great but I don't know if I could live there just because of me needing space.  I stepped out of the hotel door and immediately saw more than 1,000 people in both directions.  It was weird.  I loved it though and the subway wasn't scary at all like all midwestern hicks grow up thinking it is.  Also, murder rates per capita in NYC are redic. low compared to what you would think.  As far as Hawaii being full of poor folks I didn't notice any difference from anywhere else I've been.  We stayed in Honolulu so I'm assuming this isn't the "tourist areas" that have been refered to.  We were all over the city and you see the usual amount of homeless types but everyone was super friendly and relaxed.  The campus was also pretty cool but you won't find anywhere that the houses look "new" given everything has to be shipped in. Everyone there said they wanted to live ont he mainland though given they were somewhat trapped having to fly anywhere else.  You can drive around the whole island of Oahu in a short day.  Oahu is the third largest island but has 80% of the population (numebrs off the top of my head so est.) so I'm guessing the other islands would allow much more space and fewer poor folks if that's what scares you off.

Ok, largest city in the US. I personally have never been there, but I know some people like cities, so that's great for them.  New York is much more than 'the city' though. There are some beautiful parts; Niagra Falls, 1000 Islands, Adirondacks, Lake Placid, Catskills...lots of Universities through the entire state, fun small college towns...plentiful outdoor activites.  Highly diverse state.

This thread is chock full of geotards.  Hawaii is getting way too much love.  Oahu is too overrun, the big island is too bland.  Maui is very nice, but St. John (yeah it's part of a US territory, not a state, so what).  I haven't been to Kauai, so I guess I can't pass full judgement, but still.  Plus it's too isolated.

Colorado is nice, but for mountains I'd rather go to Idaho, Montana, or yes, Utah.  Central Utah blows, but so does eastern Colorado.

From a geographical point of view, listing anything in Florida is an absolute joke.  Yeah it has coastine, but you'll find better beaches elsewhere, and interior Florida is flatter than Kansas.  Seriously.

I'm really partial to the northeast myself.  Washington state has some nice varried terrain.  I love the Olympic Peninsula and the Cascades.

Seriously, going to Washington this summer; Seattle/Olympic penin/up the coast a little ways.  Chose it for the combination of city, plains, mountains, rain forest, ocean, woodlands, waterfalls, etc.  All in a relatively small area. Just isn't enough time to do all that we want to do.

North Carolina is pretty nice.   The Southeastern Coastal Plain is pretty boring from a topographic standpoint though, but it has some nice beaches.   The Northeastern Coast of NC From the Virginia Line down to about Cape Lookout is nice, almost like a "southern" Maine feel without the rocky coast line.

Piedmont area is interesting, and then you get into the mountains of Western North Carolina which I haven't had enough time to explore as I'd like. 

I travel a lot around the Southeastern Coastal Plain area and if you've lived in Kansas, you start jonesing for "big sky country" because if the land is going to be so flat, you might as well be able to see something besides stand upon stand of pine trees.   

The Lumbee/Lumber river looks like it could be a good float trip, but down in that area you've got the Lumbee Indians, lots of rednecks and sections of whole counties that even law enforcement is afraid to go into . . . it's a little freaky man.
