Oh, alright. I knew you had traveled, maybe even studied abroad (KOUGS!!), I just didn't know where. Don't they play in Glasgow?

Not a soccer fan, but for some reason I really like the EA Sports FIFA game.  I manage:

Since I know next to nothing about soccer, I pretty much play it like I play basketball video games.  Lots of physical defense and really push the ball on offense.

The cool thing about the game is how many teams they have on there.  You can play as pretty much any major professional team in the world, from England to the US to Greece to Brazil.

I LOVE FIFA 08.

Unbelievable.

Haven't even really touched my other games.

I manage Celtic, Newcastle (weird) and Roma.

Mostly Celtic but have gotten in to Newcastle recently.

I play the way you do kind of but pretty much always up the wings.

What formations do you play?

I've really fallen in love with the 4-2-3-1 that Roma runs standard.  Have worked out Celtic to run it.

Pretty much my only complaint is the goalkeeping is impossible to really control and I always give up terrible goals on rebound situations when I can't control my defender or goalie and on crosses when the goalie stands on the line like an asshat and then starts coming out right when the ball is getting there.  VERY FRUSTRATING.

Just up to "Professional" level now.  World Class is going to be ballz difficult.

I run a 4-3-3.  I don't know crap about formations...I just got familiar with that one.  I have a forward who's nails with the header off a corner kick, so I just try to maximize my shots on goal to at least get corners.

Just played for the first time in a while today.  Wrapped up my Premier League championship, lost the English Cup final to Chelsea, but won the ECC.  Newcastle renewed my contract and I signed a couple of defensive players to upgrade that area.  I have some trouble in the transfer market due to my utter ignorance regarding position abbreviations.

Forwards
st- striker (dude that scores goals)
cf- central forward (goal scorer/distributer good at short passing)
rf/lf-right and left forward (you know from 4-3-3 they play up front)

Midfield
lw/rw- guys that can cross the ball in from the wings.
cdm- central defensive mid
cm- central midfield with skills in between cdm/cam
cam- central attacking mid

Defense
lwb/rwb- offensive minded wing defenders they cross the ball in when they push up
rb/lb- still push up and cross but more defensive minded
cb- center backs big ugly dudes that crack skulls
sw- play in front of center backs, win balls kind of like a defensive mid that plays further back.

On the game:  I would spend a lot of money on the scout and the negotiator.  They pay off.  Getting players from scouting and then selling them is really profitable.  The transfer market is the key to long-term success.  Get young players, sell off the expensive dudes as they get to 30 and start over.

I love this game.  I know, I'm pathetic, but I freaking love this game.

Sweet, thanks for the info.  The defensive guys I bought were a couple of CBs.

I'll have to start spending more on the scout and negotiator.  So far I've spend a lot on the fitness and medical coaches, because I didn't know where best to spend it.

Fitness is good to max as well.  Also, jack up your ticket prices and expand your stadium when you can afford it.  Pretty much always have your scout looking for talent.  It is cheap.  Sign anyone over 75-80 and send the scout out for strikers or goalkeepers if you already have good players at every position and then trade those guys away during the transfer period.  If they are good enough, you can always keep them.  Also, sign guys to 5 year contracts whenever possible, not sure if it has any effect on the game besides the flexibility it gets you.  You can always try to sell the players if they suck or you want to upgrade and you lock them in at a cheap price if they are good.

Getting good players from the American leagues or from the scouts is usually really cheap too.  I have a center back that is 88 overall that I pay $4,000 a match because I locked him in for 5 years and then I had the price still low when he came back up for contract on the auto-renewal.  Glitch in the game it seems like, but awesome.

All in all, getting a great goalkeeper, solid tacklers in the midfield and defense and whatever guys play in to your attacking strategy up top (big guys with good head accuracy/head power/volleys/finishing if you like to head it in from crosses, really fast guys if you like to put in through balls/long balls up the middle)  Having a guy with like 80's or 90's volleying if you like putting in crosses and scoring from corners is awesome.  You'll never go back.

Also:  I've never scored from a free kick.  Any advice?  Have you?

Wanna know what really chaps my buns?  Indoor I play goalie a lot now.  Just because I'm not completely incompetent at it (and am a sub-par outfield player).  Everyone else plays keeper like an old wife gives a beejay: little interest and for as short as possible.

Well, &@#% me.

So maybe I can't do a fantsy-pants step-over or double drag back or an around the world or play a thru ball to myself.  But if you cross it right in front of the goal, guess who's going to ram it home?  Ok?  That's me.

Or you could let that piece of crap Honduran d00d get pwn3d by the Saudis.  Not my call, I guess. :flush:

All the time (I think?).  That's where you get to kick if you get fouled outside the box, right?  (Inside the box = penalty.)  I pick "low off and shoot" (?) (one player stands to the side and kicks the ball just a little and then the main guy takes the shot) and target the closest top corner of the goal, just slightly lower than the top bar, then put spin on the ball so it will curve away from the keeper and toward the side of the goal.  I'd say I make this shot ~60% of the time, usually only missing when I don't put enough juice on it and the defenders standing in front get a piece.

Also, keep in mind I'm playing with the 2005 version of the game, which is somewhat different.  For instance, I don't think the career mode is quite as involved.

    PRIMETIME LEAGUE ALL-STAR

I know, I know its like rooting for the Yankees.  But in during my college years fox would run the EPL review show.  About half the show was Man U game highlights and I effing loved Eric Cantona.  They were really fracking good and they were all I knew.  I can totally see how foreigners would love the Yankees.
