their misrepresentation of the actual events bothered me. i think the way it really happened was a better story and made them look a lot better than the needless slaughter.

Did you really expect any degree of historical accuracy from Hollywood interpreting a comic book that depicts a comic book writer's interpretation of a historical event?  If I were looking for a telling with a bit more historical weight I'd read Herodotus' account rather than watching 300.
