The story lost in all this is how worthless the pre-season polling is. It won't end, though, because being able to play-up No. X vs. No. 7 in September supposedly generates more money for the networks (and conferences). The AP and Coaches polls shouldn't be released until a week before the BCS Poll, in October. Then we'd have true rankings, after 5 or 6 weeks of on field action.
As it is now, if a team isn't ranked in the pre-season, it has no chance to win a national title (AP's or BCS).
