Worst stadium? I've only seen one other poster mention it... Manhattan, Kansas. Visited in 2002… and enjoyed a win after the Horns blocked a late KSU field goal trying to tie and send it to overtime. We stayed in Junction City… a little over 20 miles away if I remember right. For openers… there’s only the equivalent to a FM road in and out of Manhattan from IH 70. Getting into Manhattan before the game wasn’t so bad… but getting out was a nightmare… as the line of traffic was literally bumper to bumper for miles (10 or 15 miles if I remember right)… all the way back to IH 70. I remember cresting several hills along the way… just to see a line of taillights as far as the eye could see… literally… moving at a snails pace.Arrived at the stadium… and parked in a dry and dusty cow pasture across the street from the stadium. The car was almost unrecognizable from dust after the game. Thankfully… it didn’t rain… as it would have been a quagmire. Still… I’ve probably parked in worse locations. At least it wasn’t far from the stadium. As we head for the stadium… we haven’t even left the “lot” when we begin to get bombarded by some of the most drunk and obnoxious fans I’ve ever experienced (night game… maybe they had been drinking all day). I’m used to drunk and obnoxious… but at K-State it was different. Tough to put my finger on it… but they were an “in your face” kind of obnoxious… almost as if trying to provoke a fight… and the stream of them approaching seemed endless. I’m all for a little good-hearted smack before a game… but we didn’t even go there… you just kind of knew instinctively not to… the climate was hostile… you could “feel” it. We just smiled and kept walking.Made it to the parking lots surrounding the stadium where the boosters (many with their RV’s) were parked. Did it get any better? Nope! The only difference between that lot and the one we had parked in was that now we had 7 to 12 year old kids walking up and giving us a ration while their more well-to-do parents just smiled… “That’s my boy!” These kids were using pretty salty language in front of their parents. Amazing… as we thought to ourselves… “They must start ‘em young”. Out of all this… one classy older gentleman came up to us and apologized… and asked us not to judge K-State on what we were being exposed to. We thanked him… and said “No problem… we’re used to it… we don’t think anything of it”.And now for the stadium…Once inside the stadium… we’re ready to find our seats… upper deck… so we begin to climb the stairs. No problem… I’m in good health. However, to date this has been the only stadium I’ve been to that divides the visiting fans into two sections. One… was at the field level on the end opposite the field house… and the others… myself included… were in the upper-most deck at the opposite corner of the stadium. In separating the fan base like that… it makes the amount of noise you can generate seem very insignificant… you feel cut off… and the band seems a mile away. I gave Bill Snyder credit there… as I remember thinking at the time he must have had something to do with it.Okay… so… now that we’ve found our seats… let’s use the facilities and get something to eat and drink before the game starts. Walk out onto the upper deck concourse and there is nothing. No restrooms… no concessions. We ask a stadium official where we can find what we’re looking for… only to learn that all food and restrooms are back on the ground floor of the stadium. So… back down we go. And it wasn’t just us… as the upper deck had a majority of K-State fans… and why they don’t expect better is beyond me. If you should have to get up during a game… you’re going to miss a lot of the action just getting up and down the stairs. Imagine having to leave the upper deck at Royal-Memorial and return to ground level for food and restrooms. Granted… Royal-Memorial is bigger… and better equipped to get you up and down… but you get the idea.During the game… the K-State fans were just as obnoxious as pre-game… all game… especially as they were rallying late… when they appeared ready to kick a field goal and send the game into overtime. However… once the kick was blocked… they flooded out of the stadium en masse immediately after. Save for the Horn fans… the stadium was empty. One minute you’re surrounded… the next… almost without you realizing it… you’re standing alone. Clearly… they could dish it out… but they wanted no part of taking it.As we descended the stairs afterwards a group of Longhorn fans shouted “Whose house? Horns house!”... and I could tell every Longhorn fan was of the same mindset after being subjected to the K-State fans vitriol throughout the evening… and we were just letting out some of what we had kept in to that point.Once we reached ground level, one K-State fan in her mid-40’s had the audacity to tell us we really shouldn’t be doing that because we were just making ourselves obnoxious… and I couldn’t help but wonder if she even recognized the same, if not worse, behavior in her own fan base. Hell… I sat in semi-shock at Royal-Memorial late (the Texas band had already marched out) after the Horns lost to K-State in 1999… and had a K-State woman my mother’s age make a bee line across three sections to where I was sitting with a friend just to tell me “In your house! Humph!”… with her daughter (about my age) following behind chuckling.Anyway… then came that trip back to the hotel I mentioned earlier. We travel to one… and occasionally two… road games a year… and have been to several of the Big 12 stadiums more than once since the league was formed… but we’ve vowed once was enough for Manhattan. There are others… the amenities at the Cotton Bowl definitely suck… but I personally allow the historical significance of the place to overshadow the inconveniences.
