Good article, I think Greenawalt will help.  I'm still worried about a guy who is an inch shorter than Beasley playing in the post, but he sounds capable of good things.

I still want my cooler, bitches!

He won't play much.

I'd guess he'd be used similar to Colon last year (or played even less).

Fat and short is not a good recipe for a "center".

Yeah, I'd rather he be tall and skinny like Bennett.  :jerkoff:

Bennett wasn't skinny.

lol's at not wanting tall players because of Jason Bennett, though.

lol's at not wanting short players because of Ron Anderson, a player
you have NEVER seen play in person.

Rusty, there have been numerous 6-7 centers that
thrived because they knew positioning, they had a
knack for being around the bb, they were good with
their back to the basket. Being a center isn't just about
being 6-9 or 6-10, it's about playing smart.

You telling me that Ed Nealy wasn't a great center at 6-7?
What about Fred McCoy? What about Charles Barkley?

And all 3 of those guys were not only short, but a little
on the chunky side. They didn't have a problem at
the center position.

Here are a few more tidbits about him...

1.  Wednesday, 25 July 2007   Adidas Super 64 Days 1 & 2
Ron has a very steady game.  He’s an average to slightly above average athlete so he does jump out at you right away.  He doesn’t seem to put together a “wow” game, but nevertheless, the big bodied post player is very efficient.  He has great hands and gets good positioning so he doesn’t have to work much to put the ball into the goal.  Ron had a very nice catch and finish along with a foul near the rim.  He had an offensive rebound put back.  He seems to have a pretty good understanding of how to score in the paint.  Ron also mixed in a nice drive from the perimeter during his game.  Ron is a very productive player and fun to watch.

2.  Reebok Summer Classic Friday, 13 July 2007 (where other teams included Allen Chaney and Mookie Jones amoung others)
Ron was pretty steady at the Southern Invitational. That fine play continued here. He’s a big bodied interior player who can really rebound. He has nice hands and good touch around the basket. Because of his size, he’s also able to get deep positioning. Ron had a nice short catch and finish with the left hand. He was also fouled on the play. He doesn’t get a lot of touches, but is pretty effective when he does get the ball down low.

3.  Southern Invitational (Part 2) 15 May 2007,
Ron is a powerful interior player. He combines a big body with some nice post skills. He hit a beautiful jump hook in one game. He was also very tough to keep off the glass as he grabbed a number of offensive rebounds. With all of the talented guards and wing players on his team, Ron’s touches were limited. He did make the most of them though.

4.  January 16, 2007, Regular season game:
Luckily for Dan Wadley's bank account, Ron Anderson is watching his weight.
Wadley, in his first year as McCallie's basketball coach, promised Anderson a steak dinner for every game the 6-foot-7, 280-pound senior grabbed 15 rebounds. But with Anderson now trying to lose a few pounds, he will have to settle for chicken instead.
Wadley owes his massive post player another meal after Monday's inspired second half. Anderson led the Blue Tornado to a 61-54 victory over Soddy-Daisy with 20 points and 15 rebounds. "When you've got a kid his size, you get him the ball," Wadley said. "We did a good job of that in the second half, and Ron finished when he got those chances.  With starters Walter Dozier and Joel Bradford sitting out with four fouls each to start the fourth quarter, Anderson scored on three consecutive possessions, including a pair of putbacks, giving McCallie an 11-point lead again.  "I knew whenever I got that ball that they were going to double-team me," Anderson said. "I trust my teammates enough than whenever that happened, I looked for the open shooter. When I wasn't doubled, I looked to turn and score.

5.  Analysis:
Ron is a powerful interior player. He combines a big body with some nice post skills. He has a beautiful jump hook. He is also very tough to keep off the glass, particularly on the offensive end.

6.  Pre-Game Academy Roundball Classic high school basketball all-star game March 31, 2007
...unlike...who signed with Mississippi State University in November, McCallie senior Ron Anderson is still trying to make that decision.  His 24-point, 22-rebound performance Friday in leading the boys' away team to an 81-78 win at Chattanooga State might make it a little easier.  "After this I'm probably going to start taking phone calls and seeing what's out there," Anderson said. "I know there were some coaches here, but tonight was really just about having fun. We all wanted to go out there and put on a good show for everyone.  "I was really honored to get to play with some of the best players around here."  "This game was all about having fun, but everyone out there does have that competitive nature," Anderson said. "That's why we're all-stars. I think we all wanted to win there at the end."  Anderson helped his team rally for the victory as Temple's Seth Skogen finished with 14 points and Notre Dame's Chauncey Thompson had 12. Daren Chandler led the home team with 19 points, while McNeill finished with 16 and Orlanda Wells added 11.

7.  He has worked himself into a college prospect, helping the Blue Tornado to the Divison II state semifinals last year. This season, he is averaging a double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) for a McCallie team ranked No. 2 in the state. He is drawing recruiting interest from Virginia Commonwealth, Tennessee Tech, Lipscomb and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  "Some colleges may see him as a raw talent because he’s still young and developing," said McCallie coach Dan Wadley, who coached Tennessee Temple until this year. "I coached against him the last couple of years, and I’m really glad I don’t have to prepare for him anymore. He’s a load, a real matchup problem.  "I knew how good he was on the court, but one of the first things I noticed when I got here is how good a kid he is. He’s got a real special relationship with his mom, and she’s done a good job of raising a fine young man."

    I survived the Dickey/Parrish era.
Ed Nealy? Nealy led the Big 8 in rebounds.  Because of his positioning? Nah.  It's easy to gather rebounds when the first three shots you take clank the bottom of the rim and drop back in your hands.

not one under 6' 10"

I didn't realize we switched the subject to the NBA.

I thought we were discussing K-State's center position
for next year. But nice try.

And Nealy shot 57% his senior year at KSU.

^That man is no Charles Barkley.

It's not just that he's short...it's that he's short, fat, and no one recruited him.  Samuels got offered by Tennessee and Georgetown.

Let's just go ahead and consider him the next average undersized center from when you were in school 20 years ago.

If you were a betting man, (maybe you are), would you bet on him being the next Charles Barkley or the next Luis Colon (only shorter)?

I'd take somewhere in between and be happy.
But since you can predict things so well,
you should already know that I was gonna say that.

I think the kid is more of a power forward then a center.  Sounds like he can rebound and has a solid back to the basket game.  I'm picturing Marcus Hayden without the weed and attitude problem.  Hayden was overated out of high school but if he would have had his head on straight he could have been a solid contributer.  I think this kid can help out, I'm not jumping for joy over him but anytime you can get a guy with decent size and some post skills you feel pretty good about it.

Why is everyone convinced this guy has post skills, no attitude problem, and has never smoked weed?  Because Brian Gates says so?

Also, Marques Hayden only weighed 220 coming in....Anderson has been listed as high as 280 in 2007...

Anderson was also recruited by Providence, South Florida, Texas A&M, George Mason, and Virginia Commonwealth.

I suggest that we trust Martin’s and Hill’s instincts and their decision to sign Anderson, and maybe give the kid a chance to show us what he can or can’t do before we pronounce him as a waste of a scholarship...

I just don't think he's good enough to use a scholarship on.  I mean, he's better than nobody, but there has to be atleast one player in the '08 class (yes, I know Ron's in the '07 class) that's better than him that his scholarship could to towards.

It's hard to imagine this guy providing less than Kent or Colon.

And it's hard to imagine there being much value in adding a third Kent/Colon quality player.

Let's be honest.  The Anderson and Gilbert signings have a very Ron Prince feel to them.  Maybe they'll pan out.

But it was a @#%! of a lot more fun following updates on guys like Pullen, Clemente, Samuels and Sutton, let alone Walker/Beasley.

I can't speak for everyone...only myself.  The answer to your first concern (post skills) is because I have seen him play.  That's all I have to go off of.  What do you have to go off of to make claims otherwise?

I haven't seen you post on him, so that wouldn't explain why everyone thinks he has post skills.  I do remember you being unimpressed with Michael Beasley, though.

You would have to dig a little bit, but I posted once in that "?" thread in which about 1/2 of the posts are yours.  Sorry, I just don't try and post the same thing over and over again like the Powertard Masters who have seemingly taken over this board.

You're right in regard to your memory of my comments on Beasley.  I saw Beasley once last year in person here at the Super 64 tournament.  He just didn't have a dominant game.  It wasn't horrible, just not jaw dropping.  Nolan Smith and the G'Town recruit were more impressive.  It was one game though, after 3-4 games where, according to the reports at least, he did stand out.

I've seen Anderson play 3 times once last year and twice this year at the end of July.  His game seems completely different this year than last.  Is he a star in college?  I don't see that.  I do see a great role player...and that is going to be needed on this team...especially on the inside.
