It's impossible to watch the Royals if you're out with a group of people at a non-sports bar.

whenever i go somewhere like that i just ask them to turn the royals game on, they do. 
i don't think outback is crappy though, i think it's pretty good for a chain.

i think usually the bartenders just turn the television on, turn it to sports, and get to pouring drinks.  they have no clue whats on the thing because they're busy working.

I think bartenders that can discuss sports with you are a dying breed.  The ones now just want to talk about Incubus and Modest Mouse.  Or what classes they are taking at the local community college.  Or how odd it is being a lesbian in Kansas.
