I need help transferring some video to my computer. I originally burned the DVD-R disk on my DVD recorder but need help converting the .VOB files to something like .mpg or .avi. Anybody have any suggestions?

I used to use this. I used DVD Decrypter to rip, then AutoGK for conversion. I'm pretty sure it can do .VOB files. If not, let me know.

I've already tried using that. It ran for over an hour with no end in sight so I gave up on it. Ever tried DVD to MPG Converter?

I haven't tried that one. I stopped doing the DVD ripping once I left the second floor of Putnam where a guy had over 1200 DVD (copies of course), so I just used AutoGK.

The fact it's taking a long time has me surprised. Normally for a two hour movie, it would take about 30 minutes to encode. And that was on old hardware. I think VLC (VideoLAN) Player may do it. It's kinda awkward to encode things. Just open VLC, go to file-wizard-transcode file. Select the file, select output (AVI, most likely). Then let it go. You might also want to try Handbrake. It's a Mac program that just came out on the PC. It may be easier to use.

    The very best.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Flask it!

I think it's called Flask MPEG Encoder or something.

Not sure if it cost $$, but if you can't find a way to download it free, then you have no business trying to pirate movies.

Mildly related semi-threadjack:  Can anyone recommend a (free) tool to just nab the audio tracks?  I have a few concert DVDs that I'd like to add to iPod rotation.
