yeah, think of the first run of ipods that came out and compare them to the new 60 gb videos. same thing will happen to the phones. but in all seriousness, we have a major problem on our hands. the new iphone will take over the world shortly.

Well yeah, I can't even get one because Manhattan doesn't have an AT&T location. They look extremely badass though.

sure there is, drive to KC and buy one.  roaming is free between att/cingular/tmobile (gsm) and sprint/verizon (cdma).  i'm assuming there are gsm towers down there.

kono - 3g has shown up, it's called EVDO and available on sprint/verizon's networks.  the next gen of broadband data on a gsm network will be referred to as 4g - i think.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

iPhone only works with AT&T. Their service in Manhattan blows from what I hear.

it does only work on ATT-like networks (shared between Cingular which is the new ATT and T-Mobile) all three companies use the same air interface called GSM
sprint and verizon use a different air interface called CDMA
the towers you need are att/cing/tmobile

So wait, I could go to a Cingular store and get the iPhone and it would work fine? Because I know Cingular is in Manhattan..

I know 3G has shown up, however, the iPhone will not initially support it.  It will be a quad-band GSM (2G) phone, with vague promises of a 3G model later on.  Spending $499 or more on outgoing technology isn't my cup of tea.

Wikipedia has a disgusting amount of detail on these topics if you want to dig in.

I figured that, but was I inaccurate anywhere?  I suggested to wait until a 3G version (of the iPhone) shows up, not that 3G networks don't exist.

Apple sucks. If people are willing to pay $600 for over hyped, under developed stuff, good for them. I've been working on OSX for the past 8 months at work. I can't stand apple and their emo followers.

They have a deal with Cingular/AT&T.  AT&T has (USA) exclusivity for five years, but Apple gets a cut of the subscriptions, and a lot of control that other 3rd party manufacturers probably don't have.  While I don't have the exact details, here are some quotes from a Verizon exec who turned Apple down before they went to Cingular:

Among other things, Apple wanted a percentage of the monthly cellphone fees, say over how and where iPhones could be sold and control of the relationship with iPhone customers

According to Verizon, Apple CEO Steve Jobs insisted that he have hard control over iPhone distribution.  The problem?  While Apple and Verizon stores would have it, Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other Verizon distributors could have been left out.

Customer care was another hitch: If an iPhone went haywire, Apple wanted sole discretion over whether to replace or repair the phone.

What it comes down to is that Apple execs are a bunch of hard-asses who want complete control over every aspect of the experience, from the advertising, to the point of sale, to the things you can install on their devices, to the tech support.  They've historically been in favor of proprietary systems, and this is how that manifests itself in the cellphone market.

You've been brainwashed by the fatties at the apple store.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I really don't care how bad of an idea it is. It's still absolutley badass. I have a sidekick right now. I use the internet feature all of the time. The iPhone just looks that much better.

yeah...but still badass.

bad idea cause when its really cold at a football game, im sure the LCD will suck ass.

when its really hot out, the sweat will cover that front plate and make it slippery..

etc...if you drop it...YIKES. liquid crystals will surely destroy the whole thing.
