...to get rid of unwanted (and as far as I know unsolicited) Bulls@#* internet security software that does nothing but piss you off and try to sell you updates that do nothing?  I know this shows my technical ineptness, but your help is appreciated as long as your suggestion doesn't simply say "call Geek Squad."

Have you gone into Remove Programs in the Control Panel?

or is this adware/spyware/malware?

Which program is it?

It's spyware and malware I believe.  I tried removing programs in the control panel, and either I haven't gotten the right ones or it's somehow cached somewhere else, I don't know and it's making me all sorts of pissed off.

Download Lavasoft's Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.  You can get them both at http://www.download.com.  Run them both.  You might need to run them both from Safe Mode to keep them from coming back.

Make sure your computer has been updated through Microsoft Update.

Download a copy of HijackThis.  Run it.  It creates a log that will show all of the processes running.  Post a copy of the log here and I'll have someone look at it to see what might be left of the problem.

1.  Back-up

2.  F-Disc

3.  Re-install

Ok, I downloaded ad-aware and spybot, and it took care of the bogus malware trojan horse deal.  But I still have bubbles coming up in the bottom right saying that my system has a spyware problem and to click to purchase software to get rid of it.  I already have multiple types of spyware detection/deletion software, so I'm pretty sure it's bulls**t.  But it's still annoying.  Any help is appreciated.

    It's time to hit it.
Try booting into safe mode and running adaware and spybot if you haven't already.  usually seems to take care of the stragglers.

Good suggestion.

I will post the log in a nerd forum and see what they say.

Believe it or not, I think Norton finally caught it this morning.  Everything seems to be working just fine, but you never know.  Thanks again, everyone

You are not running HijackThis (HJT) from a desired location. You really need to setup a dedicated folder for HJT items – to avoid horrible clutter and/or potential lost backup issues.

It's best that the HijackThis tool NOT be located in its current location (particularly on your Desktop or in a TEMP folder). This way you can more easily undo any changes if something goes wrong.

    * Create a new folder in your C: Drive.
    * Name the FOLDER HijackThis (or HJT) such as C:\Program Files\HijackThis or C:\HJT and
    * Move the HijackThis.exe file into the newly created FOLDER.
    * Run HJT from there (and revise your shortcut accordingly).

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

DO NOT RUN ANY OTHER OPTIONS UNTIL REQUESTED TO. This is very important to get an optimal and comprehensive fix.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Thanks again, I think I can handle it from here.  If only my computer applications class in HS hadn't been in 1996.  Pittcat = low computerIQ!
