Brandon Farr was 3-for-5 Friday with two runs scored.

LAFAYETTE, La. – Kansas State scored runs in each of the first four innings and added three more in the eighth as the Wildcats defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 10-5, Friday at Tigue Moore Field in the first day of the Mardi Gras Ball Classic. With the win, K-State improved to 2-1 on the young season, while Louisiana-Monroe fell to 0-8.

Jared Goedert, Joe Roundy and Brandon Farr led a Wildcat offense that banged out 14 hits on the day with Goedert leading the way with a career-tying four hits on the day. His four hits extended his current hitting streak to a career-best eight games. Farr and Roundy each had three hits, while Roundy tied a career-high with four RBI.

Sophomore Chase Bayuk (1-0), in his first career start, scattered five hits over 5.0 innings while allowing just one earned run. Chase Mitchell made his first career relief appearance Friday and gave up one run on three hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work. Bryan Peterson closed out the win by retiring the Indians in the ninth.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one inning as Brandon Farr and Jared Goedert each singled before a Cris Tapia walk loaded the bases. Farr then scored on a balk before Joe Roundy singled to right to plate Goedert for a 2-0 lead. Barrett Rice followed with a sacrifice fly to left to bring in Tapia to up the lead to three runs.

K-State struck again in the second, this time all with two outs. Andrew Giambrone got things going after being hit by a pitch and then moved to second on an infield single from Farr. Goedert then singled in Giambrone with a base knock to left, giving the Wildcats a 4-0 advantage.

Monroe got back into the game in the third as two Wildcat errors led to three unearned runs to cut the K-State lead to one at 4-3. But, K-State answered back as Giambrone’s two-out, bases-loaded double to right brought home two more runs to give the Cats a 6-3 lead.

ULM closed to within 7-5 after scoring runs in the fourth and eighth innings, but K-State put the game out of reach as Roundy’s bases-loaded triple to right center gave the Wildcats a 10-5 advantage.

K-State is scheduled to play host Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday at Tigue Moore Field. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m. Live stats will be available at k-statesports.com.
