I've made up my mind. Martin isn't going to make it
When Frank Martin was hired, I said, "This can't end well."

Two things changed my mind this year.  One, his pipeline back East is going to bring in some talented players.  Certainly good enough to compete for an ncaa bid each year.  And at times his team plays tenacious defense.

But watching last night's game, I flipped back.  It dawned on me why Frank is not a good coach, and won't make KSU a consistent ncaa team.

Some possessions the Wildcats totally abandoned their offense and came down and jacked up a very poor shot.  Frank Martin sat on the bench motionless.  This happened four or five times that I saw.

And then on some possessions where they worked hard, ran the offense, but the shot didn't go in - he jumped up and started screaming at them.

To be fair he got hammered by the media for cursing players out and acting like an ahole against Oregon when a player did the same thing. He should probably explain in a TO what went wrong but he was probably making it a point to not act like a douche. Yes he is a poor coach.

I think he had the right temperament to keep Walker and Beasley in line (hot temper, loud, physically imposing), but I too have doubts about Martin under more normal circumstances.  Stifling his temper won't work, either.

I hope he sticks around through next year.  It will be interesting to see what they do with McGRUUUDERRRR and Judge.  More interesting than some of the yawner teams Asbury and Woolridge put out.

As a kid/high schooler, the least intimidating/most ineffective coaches were the ones that yelled constantly.  Eventually, the coach can scream right in your face and you feel nothing.  The coaches that picked their spots were the ones I feared and respected.  You never knew when you'd get jumped so you always tried to stay focused.

Walker did not have to wait in line to go peepee....so Frank could not keep him in line.

I think Martin is the best thing to happen to opposing teams fans in a long time.  I am quiet looking forward to followup threads about his exploits with opposing fanbases this year.

Until he goes postal and charges the other teams bleachers, I'm going to enjoy the ride.

relax.  the over/under on Frank's tenure is 3 years, so he's about halfway through to his trip to coaching in a Florida juco.

He was probably yelling about defense.  He's rarely upset with the offense if they're getting to the rim, which they were for the most part last night.

Personally, I didn't see too many bad shots last night.

You should have heard what Walker was going to do on the floor until Martin negotiated him down to a simple pissing.

Re: I've made up my mind. Martin isn't going to make it Post Rating (1 vote)
I guess I didn't make my point very well.  (My wife must have been right all along.)

While I agree that Martin's constant yelling will ultimately result in the players tuning him out - my real problem last night was what he was screaming at them about.

When do you see Bill Self really go crazy?  When somebody refuses to fight through a screen, or dive after a 50/50 ball?  I was there in San Jose for the UCLA game two years ago.  We played pretty well.  But our layups wouldn't go in, and UCLA's slop did.  After the game he wasn't mad at the kids.

My problem with Martin is that if his team runs the offense and gets a good shot, but it doesn't go in...  Well, that's not a bad thing.  The law of averages will correct it.
But those were the times last night that Martin chose to scream at his team.

Similarly, if Clemente races down the court ignoring everybody else, or Pullen jacks up a three less than five seconds into the shot clock...  Yeah, it might go in.  But it's going to come back to bite them in the butt in March.
And when that happened last night?  Martin sat stone-faced on the bench.

I could be wrong.  But I don't think he's showing a lot of basketball IQ.  I would love to see one of his practices.

I don't think you're showing any BBIQ at all by judging a coach on what you are guessing he does/doesn't yell at his players about, and using a TV broadcast as a basis for that judgement.

Martin's tenure has been fun but he is no Quin Snyder.  Quin was the gift that kept on giving.

Not sure, he is bringing in better talent than in many years, they are playing hard, good defence.  I think that he stays.

Is it a bit ironic that KSU fans are the only ones that talk about "BBIQ" in every post?

Ummmm, you think?

Those folks are hilarious.  "I saw him not yelling in the right places like Self does when I watched the game on television."

Those have to be junior high kids posting on phog.

It's like Jake said, "We knew Frank before we signed up for this.  We weren't surprised when we walked on the court and Frank was screaming at us.  He's going to coach with high energy and he expects us to play with high energy whether we're up 20 or down 20 he is going to expect us to play the same way."

He went on to mention that if they mess up things they practice everyday then that will cause some frustration and once Frank tells them what they did wrong they go out try fix it.

Every player has a different learning style.  I think Frank knows what players to get after more than others to get results.  Pullen obviously responds to Frank getting after him and I think that is why you see him getting yelled at more than others.  I coach high school kids and I have found that there are players that you have to really get after and ones that you need to tone it down a bit to get your message across.  Frank seems to have a good relationship with all the players and they all respond well to him.

What you see on the court is only the tip of the iceberg of how a coach really is with his players.

Very LCIQ from the uk fans

Are you attempting to compare Beasley to the twins?  Lets have a contest with Mike vs. the twins.

26.2 points 12.4 rebounds per game

I will give you both of those losers.  We will wager the two stats.  What should we bet?  I know BMW has the balls but does anyone else?
