Our Las Vegas alumni group had a great opportunity this past Friday night to host our third annual Ahearn Scholarship Fundraiser, and the guest of honor was none other than Bob Huggins!  Huggins is in town to scout at the  high school basketball tournaments currently in action here (Reebok's Big Time Tournament, Adidas Super 64 and Main Event tournament).  Michael Beasley is playing in the Super 64 tourament, OJ Mayo and Bill Walker are in the Big Time Tournament.  They all played today, although I did not attend the games I'll catch them sometime this week.

If I could sum the whole evening up in one word it would be WOW!  Bob arrived, along with Brad Underwood and his wife, about 20 minutes before the event was set to begin and everyone in attendance had the opportunity to speak with the coach before he addressed the group later in the evening.  In all we had about 50 attendees of the event, and Huggins was just so personable and easy to approach. He spent a little over an hour with our group and was incredibly accomodating.  Yes, I was already a bit starstruck, but I really can't put into words how great Huggins made this event.

A couple of tidbits we picked up throughout the evening.

- He hasn't had a lot of time to evaluate the kids already in the program, but did note defficiencies in passing and ball handling.  The player currently in the program most likely to get a lot more playing time this year than he did last year: Darren Kent.
- Scheduling will change.  It's not like we did not know this, but specifically New York was mentioned as a place where he wanted to go.  Wants to schedule where he recruits, which means there will be no more trips to North Dakota.  When it was mentioned this would be the Wildcats first visit to North Dakota, Huggins followed up saying it would also be the last.  Maui & Alaska holiday tournaments may come into play down the line.
- Talked a little about the Las Vegas Holiday Classic coming up in December.  Plans are to have chartered trips out to Sin City from Manhattan.  Start planning now, and if you're in California/Arizona/Utah, we'd love to see you in December. We're looking forward to not only the games, but probably having another similar event in December.

Pictures follow.  We had a pretty successful auction and I managed to walk away with the Powercat Rock autograpahed by Hugs (it was autographed after the picture)!  It looks great next to my Bill Snyder autographed football.  Two legends, side-by-side.

Though I can't get the pics to work.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Hey, that's not nice.  I was just trying to goof on kstateref because is was evident that Kent lived on his dorm floor or something like that.

Anyway, dude is a total jersey chaser.

You can't be racist and like basketball.
Beautiful report, Fausto.

I didn't expect Kent and Huggins to be a very good match.  It's kind of cool.

Huggins pointed out Darren had put on about 15 lbs and hopefully will be able to pack on more weight under the guidance of the new strength coach Scott Greenawalt (whom he touted as the best in the country).  Give some credit to simple maturity and also remember Huggins fully admits he hasn't had much time to work out what is in the program at this time.

Fausto, what day are planning on having an event around the Holiday Classic? Is it open to non-alums? I'll be in town for the tournament and would be intersted in attending.

Nothing is set yet for the Holiday Classic.  Way, way to early.  It sounds like the alumni association will be chartering flight and fans will be staying at the Hooters Hotel & Casino (mjrod: take note) and I believe there may be something happening there.  If we'll have something seperate of that, or in conjunction with that, date and time are unknown.  With our event Friday if you paid your $30 you were good with us, but the Alumni Association and our local E-Mail list was all the advertising we did.   I can't imagine the Alumni Association's standards would be that much higher.    I would guess the key is knowing of the events.  I can keep you in the loop on what I know when I know it if you want.

Fausto - pm me for where I can send my money.   Also, I will be in Vegas for those events.   Also, e-mail me those pics so I can host them.

I'll just post the information (any information!) when I get it and pm you mj.  It's right around the holidays, which might hurt attendance, but we'll still make sure the SoCal, Phx and other nearby alumni groups know about all the stuff.  Nothing like a whole bunch of purple walking around town!

Wow, good for Kent. Had him in a small summer class last year; a very nice kid.

And hell, he's 6-for-6. Give him a chance, I suppose.

kent came in (aside from a 190 lbs on a 6´10" frame) with the rep of being his hs team´s defensive specialist, including guarding the other team´s point when neccesary.  indicates pretty decent footspeed and a defensive mentality.

other than his weight, i´m not sure why he wouldn´t be expected to thrive under huggins.  on the other hand, 6 for 6 not withstanding, i really doubt if he´ll be an offensive threat in 06-07.

"these are no longer “games” in the commonly accepted sense of the term. these are free throw shooting contests leavened by the occasional sprint to the other end of the floor."
