Go figure -- of all weeks for him to graduate from ROY to POY, it's this one.  Shared with Collins.  LaceDarius Dunn wins the "Michael Beasley Big 12 ROY award".

IRVING, Texas - Sherron Collins (Kansas), Michael Beasley (Kansas State) and LaceDarius Dunn (Baylor) have been named the final Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Players and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the 2007-08 season in voting by a panel of media covering the conference. It is a Big 12-record 11th weekly honor for Beasley this year, while Collins wins his first player award. Dunn is the rookie winner for the second time in 2007-08.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Sherron Collins, Kansas, G, So., 5-11, 205, Chicago, Ill./Crane Prep
Collins led Kansas to two wins last week, as the Jayhawks captured a share of the Big 12 regular season title. The sophomore guard averaged 13.0 points in victories over Texas Tech (109-51) and at Texas A&M (72-55). He shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the floor and made 7-of-8 (.875) free throw attempts. He dished out 10 assists with just one turnover in the two contests. Collins is averaging 14.7 points in his last three games.

Michael Beasley, Kansas State, F, Fr., 6-10, 235, Washington, D.C./Notre Dame Prep [Mass.]
Beasley wins his third player honor and 11th on the season overall (3 player, 8 rookie) after Kansas State won two games to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Men's Basketball Championship. He averaged 24.0 points and 11.5 rebounds, while shooting 50.0 percent (17-of-34) from the field. In two games, he connected on 12-of-15 (.800) free throws and also recorded five blocks. In a 78-72 win over Colorado, he scored 33 points to become the first player in school history to score 30 or more points in four consecutive outings. He also broke the Big 12 single-season mark for double-doubles with his 26th in that game.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

LaceDarius Dunn, Baylor, G, Fr., 6-4, 200, Monroe, La./Excelsior Christian School
Dunn posted 21.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in the Bears' 1-1 week. The freshman guard had his top performance in a 86-73 road win at Texas Tech, posting a career-high 38 points. The total set a new freshman scoring record at BU and was the highest point output since 1988. Dunn shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the field in two games, including a 7-for-12 (.583) effort from 3-point range. He also made 14-of-15 (.933) shots from the free throw line. Dunn is one of three Baylor players to win weekly honors this season.

Interesting that when Beasley has a great week, he gets the rookie award and when he has a below average game (see Iowa State), he gets co-player of the week.

Exactly what I was thinking.  Yesterday was one of his worst games stat-wise.

ku just can't win ANYTHING outright.  I think Collins lose the tiebreaker, pounds per square inch.

Kind of makes sense because his team went 2-0, clinched a 3-seed and he broke the Big 12 record for double doubles.
Show me defense.

_fan pointed this out before - which award they give beasley depends more on what other freshmen do than what beasley does.

if another freshman has a great week, then beasley gets bumped to pow, so they can give row to the other guy.  if no one else has a row-quality week, beasley occupies that slot so that they can pow some sltp.
"these are no longer “games” in the commonly accepted sense of the term. these are free throw shooting contests leavened by the occasional sprint to the other end of the floor."

Why wouldn't they just give a co-ROW award if there's a deserving rook?? If they can do it for POW, they should be able to do it for ROW.

When you combine what other rookies do and winning games its pretty clear how the award is decided.  Same with Durant last year.

Again, Durant and Beasley pretty much ruined what the ROW award is all about.  I'm sure the Big 12 thought there would be some rookies that were all-league caliber, but having the best player not only in the conference, but the country, really distorts what the award was intended to be about on a consistent basis.

When you talk about winning games, you're saying that if K-State doesn't win its game, Beaz gets ROW and when K-State does win, he gets POW??

Yes.  Just like all this POY talk with Beasley/Hans, winning games is considered by many when they vote.

I watched my fair share of ku games this year... and I think it is very odd that there are two players on the 1st team... especially Arthur. Compared to expectations, the dude consistently underperformed all year IMO. At least Rush stepped up in some big games... still not sure if he deserved 1st team.
