Why did Maxell shoot up the mall?

Things were just starting to turn around for the Corn.  I feel bad that we as both a society and as a loving and caring message board community let him down.

This shooting actually kinda hit home for me.  My wife and I have family in Omaha, who go to the Westroads mall rather frequently especially this time of year.  Thankfully, none of them were there.
