Not happening.  We can't recruit anone with an LOI and so how could we have convinced him to get a release and sign with us on the last week to sign if we can't even talk to him?

It's pretty f'd up if they don't. If he seriously had a big enough problem with the shootings that he wanted out of his LOI then he should be released. And if VaTech refuses to release him then he will just appeal to the NCAA and they will grant him his release because of the shootings.

I don't think he'll get his release. I spoke with Curtis Malone yesterday, and he said he felt Gus should honor his letter. His logic was that something like this won't happen again at VaTech, and the incident has brought the community closer and tighter. Malone thought Gus wouldn't be released and that he'd have to go to prep school.

Thanks...I didn't figure they would give him a release.  Perhaps he'll be a possibility for '08.

I think he should get a release if he asks for it, and I wouldn't really have a problem with him asking, but it sounds like Malone is trying to get him to do the right thing.

I agree. Malone said he felt bad for Seth Greenburg, who worked his ass off to get Gilchrist, and then something like this happens that is out of his control. Malone said it wouldn't be right, which I thought was admirable.

I would lean toward not giving him a release if I were the Va Tech AD.  If the guy is in mortal fear and won't be able to sleep at night maybe I'd give it to him after a psyschiatric evaluation and recomendation.  However, he is just saying he doesn't want to go because the campus will be in mourning.  That is a lame, and I suspect untrue, reason.  I wouldn't hold the AD at fault for not releasing.

If Gilchrist feels he made the wrong decision and doesn't want to be there then it's not a good situation for either the player or school.

I think that's a very valid reason.  The campus will be completely different from the one he committed to, and you don't know what's going on in his head or what's happened in his life.  Every student that was planning on going to VT should be allowed to reconsider, athletes included. 

Personally, I think honoring his commitment would be the right thing to do and could be very rewarding for him, but I don't blame him one bit for reconsidering.

Doesn't the new prep school rule pretty much foobar the whole prep school route for a kid in good academic shape? I guess he could always go to a juco for a year and then to the school of his choice.

How so?  He's still free to not attend Va Tech, and he's still free to attend any other school that wants him.  He just can't play D1 basketball for a year.  Worse things have happened.  It's not like he joined the Army during peace time, then tried to back out after a war started.  He has plenty of options with reletively minimal consequences.

fwiw Gus said he wants out of VTech not because he's scared there'll be another shooting, but because he feels since he wasn't part of it this year he doesn't want to go throught the whole mourning process next year. He doesn't want to have to put up with the attention and the media they'll have following them next year basically. Can't really blame him there.

it may be admirable, but it doesn't help ksu.  as such, i find it hard to support crap like that.
