Most college football fans didn't know who Ell Roberson was.  They all knew about Bishop.

the big 12 was not good in 1998.

03 big 12>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 98 big 12.

If you look at the big 12 in 98 and 03:
                                         98                    03
North teams winning%          .597                 .538
South teams winning%         .549                 .597

North teams ranked (yr. end)  3                     2
South teams ranked (yr. end) 2                     2

If anything they were equal (overall) in 98 and 03, but in 98, the North was better, therefore more difficult for KSU in '98.

Nu was the only decent team in the North and they were overrated winning 2 of the last 3 national championships or whatever they did in that stretch will do that, they lost to the only good teams they played all year.  The North both years was about equal IMO.  But the 03 south is light years beyond what the 98 south was.

for as great as that '98 defense was, it was young in the backfield.  cooper, carter and butler were all undergrads.

cephus scott was a playa, but couldn't get on the field.  he transferred somewhere down south (texas?) to get pt.  always tight with coach though.

there's a great pic of him and coach after a game somewhere.  if i have time later, i'll find it.

Does anyone else remember the feeling that the season was over after the first loss?  Hell, at the time I didn't even think of '99 as a "good year"  :frown:.  Spoiled.

1999 was my favorite year ever!  Go ask a Missouri fan if 66-0 rings a bell.  That game was totally insane.  It could have been a lot worse if Snyder hadn't called off the dogs in the 3rd quarter.  Then you had Larry Smith's wife going down the sidelines telling the Missouri players they suck.  I laughed when I read about that.  Plus we finished the season ranked higher than any other year at 6th in both polls.  (In 1995 and 2002, we finished 6th in coaches and 7th AP).

If I remember correctly, we were up 35 - 0 in the 1st quarter of that game.  Insane.

I think that pic you speak of was from the 97 Fiesta Bowl.

Cireksu, you forgot Missouri was a bowl team in 98 and so too was Colorado.  Just b/c the South wasn't tough doesn't mean the Big 12 was down.  The North (KSU & UN) carried the Big 12 until 2000.  The championships won by UT and A&M were big upsets.

98 Cats were tougher, no way that team loses to Marshall at home.  It took 2 years for that team to lose 3 games, not 3 weeks.

We lost the Marshall game because Roberson had a broken hand.

Bishop was tougher, he would have played with a broken hand and kicked ass too.  Even so, that 98 team was tougher.  I will take Jeff Kelly and Mark Simoneau over Buhl and Hickman any day of the week.  Carter, Butler, Chapman, Cooper.  The only player in that dbackfield from 03 that could have played on the 98 team was Washington.

Roberson wanted to play, Snyder wouldn't let him.

I like BISHOP in 03. Although I like Roberson a lot, he did have some costly mistakes in 03 that hurt us, and if Bishop was with that offense it would have been good. That being said, yet again, I still liked Roberson.

I like Bishop in 98, except for the A&M game.  Then I want Roberson, just for that one game.

I think he means that in his scenario, there would not be a Purdue game.  Bishop comes back to face Tennessee.

Bishop was second in the heisman vote in '98 behind Ricky Williams who had just broke the all time rushing record.

Karma was a bitch, when Mike decided to leave for Arizona in 2003 during that season's big 12 championship team.  Roberson and Company looked completely unstoppable in that game.  KSU was playing like champions in that game.

A&M is a great team, but we should have won that game with the players we had.   I still get nightmares of that phantom TD.

I have spent a few evening re-watching games from 1998 and 2003.   Roberson ran with a certain kind of lazy mentality because he had an excellent offensive line.  I'd trade Lecky and Lilja to the 1998 team and have Lecky as center Eby and Lilja as guards.

On the defense, I'd pull Ochs off, and replace with Buhl.   Move Rashaad Washington to safety next to Cooper.   Sproles obviously next to Hickson because Murphy was so hit and miss.

I'd have to look at the rosters so more to be sure, that's just off the top of my head to improve the team for Bishop and not lose to A&M despite younger stoops being focused on moving to Norman.

James Terry in place of Aaron Lockett, perhaps?  Lockett was a fairly good complement to McDonald, though.  McDonald had the size and Lockett had the speed.  But Lockett never had as good a season after 1998, either.

i would have loved to have seen coleman on that '98 team.

unfortunately, we're in a '98 vs. '03 discussion.

    The very best.
who blows a 27-12 lead in the 4th quarter?

dear god we were so close.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

I actually watched that game down at The Aggie Lounge. (The Lou)  I think it was not too nice out, or maybe I didn't feel like walking.  Either way, you know a bar is cool when you will watch a big game there, on the 19" tv, rather than go somewhere with a better set-up.  But, then again, the beers down there were stupid cheap, maybe thats why I was there.
