"No specific criteria on height and weight," he said of a potential punter's requirements. "Just be willing to work, be willing to accept coaching and be willing to compete."

Anyone wanting to tryout for the team can start today by calling the Texas Tech Athletic Department and ask for Tech graduate assistant Clay McGuire. Tryouts could be held as early as today at the team's practice facility for a chance to be on the roster by Monday.

And now, coming on to punt for your own Red Raiders, averaging 32.2 yards per punt, Number 97 (insert name here.)

I wish I would have begain training to become an NFL punter at an early age.  Unlike other positions, you get the sense that you might actually have a chance to make it as a punter.  You also don't have to worry about injuries like other guys do.  Finally, you don't have to face all of the pressure that place kickers do.  It's the ideal NFL position to play.

You do have to worry about getting stabbed by the other punter on the team.

I've thought the same thing.  My uncle actually got drafted by the NFL as a punter in the early 70's.  He could've taught me.

It might be easier to train you're kid to be a long snapper.

Maybe.  If you can get your kid to be 6-0, 225 or so you're in good shape.  There is always human growth hormone as an option.
