Funny... I was just thinking the other day about how glad I am that ku got Turner Gill instead of guys like Butch Jones, Skip Holtz, Derek Dooley, Lane Kiffin, etc. Pretty amazing that ku was able to get a better coach than programs like USC and Tennessee.
You can't be serious.
Dead serious. Tell me what's so special about Derek Dooley and Lane Kiffin.
Turner Gill never served as a coordinator for any team he was a coach. He never had any experience creating offensive schemes. He never had any tactical development either, primarily serving as position coaches until he was hired by Buffalo as a head coach. He tutored no one that became a notoriety in the NFL. He did coach Heisman trophy winner Eric Crouch who later became the poster boy crybaby of the NFL. At Buffalo, he brought them out of the bottom but never got more than 8 wins and his only marquee win was against Ball State for the MAC championship.
Lane Kiffin became the offensive coordinator for USC in 2005 after Norm chow and USC went 23-3 during that time where he produced running backs Lendale White and Reggie Bush, and Heisman trophy winner Matt Leinhart. His offensive schemes and tactical prowess allowed USC to set numerous NCAA and PAC-10 records. While Kiffin had other issues, his coaching abilities for young players was never in question, going 7-6 (4-4) in the SEC conference and was on his way to taking his team to a higher level.
Derek Dooley was a product of famed Vince Dooley and spent time under Nick Saban as an assistant. He took over a La Tech program that was very erratic and hit and miss into a tough WAC team and getting the best recruiting classes Tech has seen, even competing against LSU and Les Miles. He has shown class and prowess in development of his players. It was a serious loss for LaTech but they all knew that one day he'd be called upon by bigger programs. Tennessee is not a slouch program.
ku got the kind of coach you'd expect.. so I guess that's a win for you.
