If ku offers the new head coach 3 million per year how much do you have left over for your new coach to hire a quality staff? We all know your b-ball is great but even the best basketball program doesn't generate near the $$$$ that an even mediocre football program does. How long can lew keep shaking down your big contributors for money? Mangino buyout was expensive no matter what spin you want to put on it (4 million+ is my guess) and the state won't be any help considering the horrible finacial condition our budget is in, if lew is smart he will hire a coach for around 1 million (or less) and give him plenty of $$$$ to hire a quality staff.

If you give a coach 2-5-3.0 million I just don't see where all the money will come from to hire 8-10 coaches (coordinators need 3 100K minimum) which is another 1.5-2.0  million extra to hire the remaining staff.

bill Self will never allow the b-ball program to go underfunded in any way so I just don't see where all the $$$$ are coming from, but then again you have slime balls like hadl, wittig & kavisto to steal whatever you need for the great football program you have anyway right? Good luck in getting a conference championship with all your cheating. 1968 shared, 1930 outright

It's HARBAUGH!!!

I probably don't know what what is going on but I do not understand how state funded  colleges can pay coaches 3 million dollars either. I know Texas is now paying Brown 5 million per year and that is just ridiculous if you ask me, seems like if a tenured  professor makes 150K or so and yet a coach makes several million then the system is broken.

I know athletics make D1-A schools huge amounts of money but I wonder where it all ends. Do coaches make 8-10 million in a few years at state funded schools? Do TV contracts really pay enough to float that boat or are tax payers footing some of the bill? I would really like to have some audits in this area myself. I have one kid in college right now and the tuition alone is 6k+ per year. I will have another entering college next year so I want to take this moment to thank big time athletics.

When I went to KSU tuition was around 500-600 per YEAR. Coincidence big money into college athletics has pushed tuition several 100 percent above inflation over the past 20 years or so? Maybe/ maybe not but I do know that big money has not been a good thing for college athletics IMO.

Pretty much all the BCS schools (with the exception of Vandy) have separate corporations that operate their athletic department.   The corporations for lack of a better word are chartered by the university and operate under the umbrella of the university but are for the most part separate entities.    The K-State Union, the KSU Foundation and several other entities are "chartered" by K-State but are separate corporations.

When tuition goes up, that means more money out of the pocket of K-State Athletics Inc. to cover the cost of their scholarships.   K-State athletics gets about $1.5 million a year from the state, but that's used almost exclusively to pay the salary of maintenance staff and to pay for basic upkeep of the facilities which are state property.

If college coaches are going to make the money that pro coaches make then we should probably pay scholarship athletes (legally) similar to what lower end pros make. The D1-A system is a joke, cheating is rampant and many are getting payments anyway. We have scholarship limits so players salaries can be budgeted as well, might very well even the playing field even more since we know schools like the $EC, ku, ou, u$c and many others all ready pay their players anyway.

There really isn't much separation from pro sports to amature sports anymore so paying college athletes makes a lot more sense to me than paying college coaches 4-5 million per year to be supposed civil servant employees.  :ugh:
