Q: Why is K-State's color purple?

A: Because crimson and blue is really dumb.

Naw, that's not it. Sorry.

The history here goes back to 1896, when a student committee at Kansas State Agricultural College composed of two representatives of each class made the selection. The reason: "Because of the regal beauty of royal purple and because it could not be found in use at any other school."

That's according to research conducted by Pat Patton, a research specialist in the university archives.

Patton also reports that the faculty approved royal purple as the official college color on May 28, 1921.

White got the nod as the official "contrasting color" with purple by the Student Council on Dec. 15, 1950, and by the faculty on Jan. 24, 1951.

The precise tint of the purple has, of course, changed a little over the years. And different athletics teams have tinkered with the complementary color — the football team now often uses a silver hue, and baseball goes with black.

But nobody messes with the basic idea: Purple.
