"We've had some great players come out of here,'' Cornish said. "Mangino looks to playmakers. He had Charles Gordon, Nick Reid, Charlton Keith and me. We make plays. But we aren't the prototypical NFL type. We might be a little bit small, a little bit slower, but we make things happen. It's that indifference (toward ku) that's a little bit of a problem for us.''

beanieweenies would complain about ku football if we had Bear Bryant as coach and won 5 straight national championships. The dude is tireless, he's basically an unfunny version of EDF on the gridiron board who doesn't know anything about football.

In other news, Freeman just fumbled again.

Freeman just fumbled, and somebody at ku just popped open that 1995 season recap VHS to see what a winning season in conference play looked like.

actually beanie brings up legitimate criticisms of mangino and his lack of any legitimate success in 5 years, or 6, or however many it's been.

We've got plenty of posters that realize Mangino's faults. Thing is, that is ALL that beanie talks about, and nothing else. I find it hard to believe that he's a ku fan.

By the way, when are you gonna unban me from the KSU scout site? :)

Actually, no. I don't dig through the hoops board with nearly as much thoroughness as you do, Rusty. I prefer to keep my sanity in tact.

Exactly.  I'm in the Mangino needs at least 6 if not 7 regular season wins this year or it's time to move on camp.  So are a lot of the ku fans I know.

But what good does it do to rip the guy to shreds in May, when there is 0% chance that a coaching move will be made between now and the start of the season?  No one is claiming the guy is perfect.  But any objective observer would tell you that he has improved our program several notches during his tenure.  Not as many notches as we'd like, but the improvement in our program since the 2000 season is undeniable.

I continue to be baffled by people whose opinion of Mangino seems to be changing based on the NFL Draft. His job is to win football games, and to make sure players take care of their academic responsibilities and represent ku well. Does he have a perfect resume based on those factors? Absolutely not. But the draft is just not that important in the grand scheme. I would have been quite happy with Texas A&M's season -- at least until the bowl game faceplant -- and they didn't have anyone drafted, either.

Would you feel better about the state of the program if Talib had left early and gotten picked in the second round? I for one am glad he's coming back. As I said in another thread, even if the draft matters, Mangino shouldn't be judged by the number of NFL players he pulled in during the year we were 1-10.

I agree with keeping him to this point. But I also agree with many people on here who say he needs to produce this year. As Darth Beenie and his dark-sider allies love to point out, if we don't go at least .500 this year in the Big XII, he probably will go eight years without a .500 conference record, if he keeps his job. If he can't go 4-4 in either 2006 or 2007 with the good south rotation, then it's probably time for a change. But that doesn't have anything to do with the number of players drafted -- or unreliable recruiting rankings that had Talib as a two-star player.

The reason we have accepted the mediocrity is that it is a step up from the previous coach. Mangino didn't exactly have to fill very large shoes.  Gameball was/is the worst coach ever to step foot on a D-I campus in the history of organized college sports.

I admit, it is a hell of a lot more fun to go to games than it had been in the past.  At least we are winning home games and are competative.  But, like most on here, I WANT MORE!

I have to believe this is Mangino's make or break season.

"That being said, how can anyone be pi$$ed at Mangino for what happened last year?  I know it ultimately falls on the coaches shoulders, but how can anyone honestly claim that he cost us a bowl, or that we weren't good enough to win 9-10 games?  We've been over it a thousand times here, but the NU, A&M and Baylor games we were literally 1 play away from winning, making us 9-3.  I don't blame Mangino one bit for any of these losses, as you could clearly see that it just came down to lack of execution by a player on the field."

I blame Mangino for A&M.  We were one yard away from a game clinching first down, and Mangino tries to run a finesse back up the middle against a physically superior line.

Come to think of it, he has to take some of the blame for the 4th quarter meltdown vs. Baylor, although la spectacular lack of execution (especially on two certain TD's) and the injury to Meier were also major factors in that fiasco.

"To me, this would be comparable to blaming Roy for Collison missing 60% of his free throws against Syracuse in the national championship a few years back.  It just doesn't make sense to blame the coach for situations like this."

The team as a whole missed 60%.  Also went 4 for 20 from 3 point range.  I attribute the team's shooting woes, at least in part, to Williams, who has a tendency to psyche his players out in big games.  There is a reason the only team of "his" that won it all was a team of someone else's players who did not feel the burden of winning the national championship for their coach.  They didn't give a damn about him.  They went out and won it for themselves.

"If you enjoy defending Mangino with blind loyalty, go ahead.  Keep your head buried in the sand."

That's rich. Someone who made-up a story to support his own ignorant opinion is calling Mangino defenders (those of us that think he deserves next year to show last year was a fluke) blind, and having their heads in the sand. Saying he gets one more year is hardly "blind loyalty". It's basically being on the fence, with next season being the deciding factor. Which makes infinately more sense than being on the fence with the NFL draft being the deciding factor.

And by the way, I am personally of the opinion that if Mangino gets any less than 7 wins this year, we need to head in a new direction. Personally, I'm glad we got rid of Nick Quataro, but we'll see how Warinner works out this year. There is a large amount of ku fans think he needs one more year to prove himself by getting 7+ wins, then there is the smaller faction that is happy with him and thinks he needs a few more years to break through, and then there is the extremist clique consisting of beanie, longhawk, etc. that think Mangino caused the Holocaust.

I'm off the Mangino bandwagon.  I hope he succeeds, simply because I want the best for ku football, but I don't think Mangino is the long-term solution.  I think Mangino has improved the football program from the worst in Division 1 to an average, top 50 program.  IMO, that's as far as he can take us.  He can consistently get 6-7 wins and 3-5 in conference.  I'm sick of that type of "success."

With the new football facilities, a decent assemblance of talent, a fanbase hungry for a successful football program, and a heightened commitment to football shown by Lew Perkins, ku has the opportunity to get to the next level.  I just don't think Mangino is the coach who can get us there.

It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Out of curiosity, what made you flip flop in between now and the end of last years season, when you were an adamant Manzilla defender?
