K-State recruits hearing from other schools
BY JEFFREY MARTIN
The Wichita Eagle

Seems as if the nation's No. 1 recruiting class has a few concerns tonight.

Dominique Sutton, the 6-foot-4 forward from the Patterson School in North Carolina, wants to see how the situation at Kansas State plays out before making another decision on where he'll attend college.

He'd planned to be a Wildcat, but now that Bob Huggins is gone to West Virginia, he will wait.

But as he waits, Sutton wants to make one thing clear.

"Me and Mike are a package deal," Sutton said.

Mike, of course, is Michael Beasley, the 6-foot-9 power forward from Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) regarded by some of the top basketball player in the country and the MVP of the recent McDonald's All-American Game.

It appears the transition has caused some coaches to wonder if K-State's incoming freshman class is up for grabs. And, according to Sutton, it might be.

"I spoke with Mike earlier today, and he said there were three schools who would take us," he said.

Which three schools?

"N.C. State, Florida State and USC," Sutton said.

All of this, Sutton said, could be avoided if K-State retains assistant coach Dalonte Hill or, even better, if he's promoted to head coach. Sutton said he and Beasley could be persuaded to honor their original commitment.

"That's if he's there," he said.

K-State athletic director Tim Weiser was adamant Thursday that his department does not grant releases so that players may get out of letters of intent or scholarship commitments. So if any of the incoming freshmen chose another school, they'd have to sit out one season unless they receive a release.

As for Huggins, Sutton said the former K-State coach called his coach at the Patterson School and told him three West Virginia players were planning to transfer and there would be room for Sutton and Beasley.

But Sutton doesn't sound too thrilled.

"I'd like to visit the school first, I'd like to see it," he said. "Me and the mountains don't get along."

Beasley could not be reached for comment.

Haha nice quote by Sutton at the end.  I'm curious as to what Beasley thinks about all this.  But if they're a package deal i guess it's the same as Sutton.  PLEASE STAY HILL!!!
It's a tremendous challenge here. I think it has the opportunity for the greatest turnaround in college football. It is not one to be taken lightly. ---------- Bill Snyder ( Nov 30th, 1988)
