Does this seem premature to anyone else?  They have the money I suppose.

Win-win for OSU.  If Ford really is a good coach, they have him locked up for a while.  If he doesn't turn out, they can likely gain a bigger name coach in the future based on the type of contracts this shows they're willing to give to their coaches.  Of course there is a buy-out issue in that scenario, but its pretty clear money for athletics at OSU is not going to be a problem for a while.

I'm sure Frank likes seeing this and Old Balls' new/signed contract.  Has to make him feel wanted.

I'm guessing if things look good by mid-season, we'll see Currie announcing a nice new deal for Frank.

MANHATTAN, Kan.(AP) Kansas State basketball coach Frank Martin signed a five-year contract Wednesday that will keep him with the Wildcats through the 2011-12 season.

Martin will get a base salary of $180,000 with a total compensation package of $760,000, which includes TV, radio and internet appearances, shoe and apparel sponsorships, and other services. The contract is retroactive to the 2007-2008 season.

Martin became Kansas State's coach in summer 2007, when Bob Huggins left the school after one season to coach at West Virginia, his alma mater. Martin became the second rookie coach in school history to lead his team to the NCAA tournament.

Kansas State went 21-12 under Martin. The Wildcats beat Southern California in the first round for their first NCAA tournament victory in 20 years, then lost to Wisconsin in the second round.

Base salary doesn't mean anything at all.  Anytime you see a comparison of coaches' compensation it is the total package listed.  For example, Mike Anderson has a base salary of $275,000, but his total compensation is $1.55M.  (Anderson is fourth in the Big 12 behind Self, Barnes and now Ford.)

    The very best.
can't believe we almost beat him w/our group of clowns last year.
It is a tragedy because now, we have at least an extra month without Cat football until next year. I hate wasting my life away but I can hardly wait until next year.

Mangino wipes his ass with beach towels and those cost almost $20 each, so I don't see the big difference.

Snyder's base is $250,000 IIRC.

Keep in mind part of the reason Martin's salary has been lower is b/c we're paying Hill more as an assistant.  I'm sure in some way part of that is a consession from Frank, that money had to come from somewhere.  It will be interesting to see how Curry handles the basketball contracts/staff if indeed we are as successful as we hope to be this year and beyond.
