Title: strange conspiracy rumor
Post by: Andy on March 12, 2007, 02:20:47 AM
http://mets.aolsportsblog.com/2007/03/11/wildcat-fans-fuming-at-big-xii-commish (http://mets.aolsportsblog.com/2007/03/11/wildcat-fans-fuming-at-big-xii-commish)

In a wild twist of bubble drama, Kevin Kietzman of WHB 810 AM in Kansas City is reporting that sources are telling him that the members of the selection committee called and spoke with Big XII Commissioner Kevin Weiberg last night. According to Kietzman, in the conversation they told Weiberg that only 4 Big XII teams would be getting bids and that Weiberg said they should pick Texas Tech over Kansas State. Kansas State fans are up in arms over this, and with Kietzman being the prime drive time radio host in Kansas City, you can bet this will be a huge topic on his show tomorrow.

Now, this is a bizarre story for a number of reasons. First off, Kietzman is a Kansas State alumni and an unabashed Wildcat fan, so he's far from a neutral reporter. Also, this would seem to be very strange behavior for the selection committee, who reportedly don't make their selections based on conference membership. Whatever the factual backing of this, it's going to be water cooler talk for several days in Kansas and you can bet the message board faithful who already intensely dislike Weiberg will keep the fans flamed for quite some time. There's a feeling the league office dislikes Huggins and is out to screw him in any way possible, and this won't help that perception.

dunno where this came from or why.  wierd.

Yeah, no truth to the rumor whatsoever.  K-State just canceled all media access to the selection event in Manhattan for the hell of it.  I'm sure Kevin is just going to go forward will allegations of corruption from a massive public organization without a solid lead from someone inside the athletic department.  Give the guy some credit.  This is coming from somebody high up in the food chain and with permission to go public.

You guys really don't get this, do you.

You are a moron.  Teams from the same conference can't meat until the regional finals.  The winner of that Kentucky game plays us in the round of 32.  I'll let it go though, since this is your first year of following basketball.

OMG, what an idiot, while listening and hoping hard for KSU to be in, he heard the word "Wildcats" and instinctively thought it was KSU, even though it clearly cannot be us because two teams can't meet until the regional finals!

03.11.07 9:27pm    ksuno1stunner:    You're Kevin Kietzman's son, right? Is the whole Weiberg thing true? That is bullcrap if it is.  btw, you should join the www.ksufans.com message board.

BTW, was not stalking Keitz's son.  He always makes NCAA football covers, so I noticed his name while stalking athletes.

You don't go foward with allegations of corruption about a major organization without solid information AND permission from the source.

In this case, I have no doubt this information coming from the athletic department is solid.

I was hoping for a public reaction coming directly from K-State.  This is actually a more savvy approach.  Get on the phone with one of the top media guys in the region and unleash the bulldog.

This is going to get interesting.

I'm going to make up my own conspiracy theory since that seems to be in vogue.  This all comes down to Xavier hate for Huggins and an ex-K-State coach's disdain for KSU.

Case in point 1:; Mark Fox knew his team was in the dance and knew KSU was clearly on the bubble.  As a result he tanked his team vs Utah State and took a bubble spot with him.

Case in point 2; at the same time halfway across the country, 2 coaches with Xavier ties decided Bob Huggins could not be in the dance.  So Butler's Todd Lickliter, who replaced former boss Thad Matta (Huggins hater from his time at X) and Xavier's Sean Miller (also coached with Matta, again Huggins hater) both conspired to tank it in their conference tourneys knowing they were already in.  This lead to wins for Wright State and Rhode Island in games they had no business winning.

So based on my evidence it is clear, these 3 coaches managed to take 3 bubble spots thus eliminating the chance K-State would be picked.  Clearly we need to root against Nevada, Butler, and Xavier in the dance for what they did to us.

KK is just going to make KSU look bad if he rants about Weiberg.  It's a ridiculous notion that Weiberg actually told them to take TT and even more absurd that the Committee even asked.

I hate all of that stuff.  Most of the time, anyway.  I know that makes me different than a lot of the posters here, but it's just the way it is.

Noone will ever convince me that Keitzman isn't an irresponsible clown.

Kietz is an entertainer and I think he's entertaining most of the time.  To think you're going to get rock solid sports information from any sports talk radio is silly in the first place, but most are fun to listen to.  I even enjoy 580 and 1350 from time to time, but 810 is by far the best sports talk programming around IMO.

Here's the only problem I have with the "entertainment" thing....he has to have some responsibility in what he says.  People listen to him (more than any other program in KC) and in some ways, what he says on the radio can, in some part, shape public perception.   Seriously, you can't lob out there that the Big 12 commissioner made the ultimate decision between TT and KSU without some kind of concret evidence....it's incredibly irresponsible.

will you fill those of us who can't listen to what the monologue is?

There probably is some sort of rumor, you would think that weiberg could sue someone over a statement like that.

Of course it's incredibly irresponsible.  That's pretty much par for the course for Keitz...and it makes for must-listen radio.

Yeah, Kietz has put plenty of junk out there before (Floyd to KSU!) and its never really come back to bite him.  I fail to see how this is any different.

A coaching rumor is one thing (especially since they knew that they were going up to meet with Floyd..he didn't know Floyd was going to tell them about an "up and comer" in Wooly).  The only other thing I can think of is when KK accused Mangino of cheating on a recruiting exam, without any real evidence.

This is a whole other thing, imo.  It's at a completely different level.

These conspiracy theories are just crazy. Unfortunately you got left out...along with ten other teams that had hopes of making it. Huggins got it right, if you want to get in, win more games or win the conference tournament...then they have no choice but to let you in.

Fan-tastic!

It was a liberal conspiracy to hold down Kansas State showcasing traditional family Midwestern "flyover country" values in the tournament.

my theory -- ku intentionally tanked to tt to give them another quality win, getting them in ahead of ksu.

conspiracy theories must revolve around the known lack of ethics, morality and heterosexuality at the flaw on the kaw.

He also had this little nugget: since Arkansas is a part of the SEC and the SEC is affiliated with CBS(or whichever network has the tourney), AND CBS(or whichever network has the tourney),  just paid 1 BILLION BUCKS to get the new contract on the tourney, CBS(or whichever network has the tourney) is responsible for Arkansas getting in. That is such a stretch, i have lost 100% faith in KK's ability to be sensible. BTW for anyone who thinks 810 has the best coverage for local sports, keep in mind that 810 has segments devoted to sporting events like COOKING! No, I like boring-ass Matt Walters and 1350... true KSU information and none of the KC crap that gets into 810. KK is lost, and just needs to chill out.

He's such a douche.  If they wanted to help out CBS, they would have given them a 7-10 with Indiana-Texas Tech.  That does a lot more for them than Arkansas getting in.
