Tonight starting at 5:00 on ESPNU we've got the Big South Tournament Semifinals with High Point playing VMI and Winthrop playing UNC Asheville. It would be very helpful if Winthrop could win this tournament but it could get really interesting if they have to play High Point in the Finals on Saturday.
Check it out if you get ESPNU. I do so I plan to check it out.
-
Thx.
-
For those that cant read the Bubble watch story on GPC here is the main points...
Root For:
Appalachian St (play today vs West Carolina)
Butler (Saturday in Con tourney play)
Gonzaga (Sunday Con Tourn)
Old Dominion (Saturday Con Tourn)
Winthrop (today UNC Asheville)
Root Against:
Davidonson (today Chattanooga)
Drexel (Saturday Con Tourn)
Flordia St (Sat @ Miami)
Georgia (Sat Tennessee)
Georgia Tech (Today UNC, Sunday BC)
Purdue (Saturday Northwestern)
San Diego St (Saturday tcu)
Stanford (Today ASU, Saturday Arizona)
West Virgina (Saturday Cinnci)
-
Georgia Tech is going to lose both, IMO.
-
I hope my rooting makes a difference.
-
High Point lost to VMI and Winthrop defeated UNC Asheville setting up the Championship Game tomorrow. I'll be cheering like crazy for Winthrop in that game. I couldn't believe when I was watching the Winthrop game last night that UNC Asheville had a player that is 7'6".
That's 3" taller then J.B.?
Georgia Tech beat North Carolina. Is it just me or did I hear somebody's bubble pop? :banghead:
-
Tonight I'll be watching action in the Southern Conference tournament. We have Davidson vs. Furman and Appalachian State vs. College of Charleston. You'll want to cheer like crazy for Davidson to win and eventually win the Championship Game tomorrow.
-
Go Wildcats
-
Georgia Tech beat North Carolina. Is it just me or did I hear somebody's bubble pop? :banghead:
Yeah, no joke. If crap like this keeps happening we're going to need more than two wins to get in.
-

Va upset VaTech too...not good, though they were probably in, but it just makes the ACC look more competative and therefore get more atlarge bids, over/under for the ACC? -7
-
We really need Boston College to beat Georgia Tech on Sunday. I'll take the Under and say 6 (Boston College, Maryland, Duke, N. Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech). At least I'm hoping that the ACC doesn't get any teams with losing records in.
-

Not quite sure about this. Davidson won the league by 2 games, I think, but overall, Appalachian St. has the better at-large resume. Davidson has beaten nobody of note, but App. St. beat Virginia (neutral), Vandy (neutral), and VCU (away). Davidson's best win is probably at Arizona St.
If Davidson wins the tourney, Appalachian St. is still in the at-large pool, IMO. If App. St. wins, Davidson is NIT-bound.
-
Today we've got 4 Championship games (teams that we should want to win):
Big South - Winthrop
Atlantic Sun - East Tennessee State
Southern - Davidson
Ohio Valley - Austin Peay
The reason I picked those four teams is because they're the #1 seeds. We want favorites to win their conference tournaments so that bubbles (preferably ours) don't get popped.
That's my view
-
The Big South went the way we wanted it to. The Atlantic Sun did not (does East Tennessee State still get in?). Davidson won the Southern Conference so that's good. The Ohio Valley is in progress.
-

ETSU is done. 121 RPI.
-
The Atlantic Sun result doesn't hurt us after all then.
-
Lets go Peay!!!!! :ksu:
-
Ohio Valley is a one team league. Big South is a one team league.
Good that Davidson won, App State is behind us at 62 in the RPI, they are an NIT team.
-
I'm guessing Misery State losing helps us?
-
I'm guessing Misery State losing helps us?
Yep. Most "experts" had them needing a win against Creighten to go :dancin:
-
I don't know what any of the other "bubble" teams did today.
Well...ESPN dubbed these "bubble games today".

L:
Hofstra
Michigan
Georgia
Stanford
Bradley
Syracuse
Oklahomla State

ODU
Davidson
Texas Tech
Indiana
http://scores.espn.go.com/ncb/scoreboard?view=bubble Of course, this is much easer..... ;)

Just how hard is the Big Televen gonna fall in the tourney? I'm just not convinced that conference is all "that".
-

Agreed. They are going down hard. Wisconsin = earliest exit of a 1 or 2 seed. They let everyone stay in the game.
-
Things to hope for today:
Boston College over Georgia Tech
S. Illinois to win the MVC Tournament
Anything else?
-
Drexel out in Semi's of conf. tourny. Me thinks this drops them into NIT.
-
We really needed Clemson to lose @ Va. Tech -- that didn't help. SIU & Creighton were both in anyway - that didn't matter. Georgia Tech is really starting to piss me off.
-
Yeah.....Today didn't quite go as planned. There are alot of bids up for grabs tomorrow so maybe we'll have a better day then.
-
Bama got destroyed by MSU which is good. Im not sure if Drexel losing is good or not. I would have rather them win the colonial since they are the only team that could get an at large from that league. I dont think Hofstra or VCU could get an at large.
-
I think the Colonial only gets 2 in, max. MVC may only get 2 also.
-
Tonight is the West Coast Conference Championship Game and the MAAC Championship Game. You want to be for Gonzaga in the West Coast Conference Championship Game and Niagara in the MAAC Championship Game. I'm a little worried about the fact that Marist can't win the MAAC Championship Game.
-
Has anyone else noticed that "Championship Week" is March 1-11?
-
Those should be holidays.
-
Explain this to me.....
I'm listening to "Crunch Time" and they said that if you're a K-State fan you want to be for George Mason tonight. Why would we want to be for George Mason when they're the #6 seed playing the #1 seed VCU. Wouldn't we want to be for VCU?
-
http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/16835013.htm
This seems more like it. From Blair Kerkhoff's column in today's KC Star:
The bubble madness continues for teams like Kansas State. The Wildcats not only have to win at least one game at the Big 12 tournament, but they need to keep an eye on other developments this week as well.
Cheer for Virginia Commonwealth to beat George Mason in tonight’s Colonial final. If the Patriots win, they’ll knock out an at-large team.
Two other tournaments are big for the fence-sitters, who need Butler to win the Horizon, Nevada to win the Western Athletic Conference and Gonzaga to win the West Coast Conference.
-
Our favorite Bracketologist was on Cold Pizza this morning and this is what he had to say:
Here are some late week games that we should watch (team that we want to win in bold):
Iowa vs. Purdue
Penn State vs. Illinois
Old Dominion (24-8) and Missouri State (22-10) have already lost and should be out of the way come "Selection Sunday". He has the Cats in the "Last Four Out" category with West Virginia, Massachusetts and Drexel. He said that West Virginia needs to at least beat Providence. He also mentioned Clemson saying that they MUST beat Florida State.
-
Just so we're clear.....
Who do we want to win the CAA Championship Game? I would think VCU but I've heard some people say George Mason.
-

We need VCU to win...GMU is not in w/o winning tonight and would eliminate an at-large berth.
-
I'm not saying VCU wouldn't deserve an at large bid, but I would be seriously pissed off if a colonial conference team got an at large bid and we didn't.
-
Actually, it is likely that the Colonial will get an at-large. Old Dominion won at Georgetown and beat Drexel (both top 40 RPI according to Real Time). It's likely that 2 CAA teams get in VCU and ODU, if GMU wins tonight that puts a third team in the mix.
-
VCU wins!!!!! It'll be interesting to see how many teams that conference gets though!

Yes but this is the OFFICIAL Championship Week Thread

He's not. He's just being stupid and immature because that's all he knows how to be. I'm used to it.

Wrapping up the day's action.....
Good Things That Happened Today:
Virginia Commonwealth wins the CAA
Niagara wins MAAC (probably good)
Gonzaga wins WCC
So far so good for the Bubble Bound Cats!!!!!
:ksu:

Tonight we've got the Horizon League Championship Game, the Mid-Con Championship Game and the Sun Belt Championship Game.
Teams to root for:
Horizon - Wright State
Mid Con - Oral Roberts
Sun Belt - Arkansas State
Should we be worried that Arkansas State is the #2 seed and that the #1 seed South Alabama(?) lost earlier in the tournament?
-
Uh, I think we want Butler to win.
-
Butler could get an at large, Wright State has no shot. Go for Butler.
Mid-Con shouldn't matter, even though ORU beat ku. ORU has no real shot at an at large with a loss.
Sun Belt is a one team league as well, winner doesn't matter.
-
Uh, I think we want Butler to win.
I think so to.....the OFFICIAL thread kinda sucks. :D
-
Uh, I think we want Butler to win.
Ok but Wright State is the #1 seed.
-
LOL @ the guy who insists on maintaining all of the "OFFICIAL" threads no one cares about not knowing what he's talking about
-
Obviously you haven't followed Butler this year. They have a Top 30 RPI and a 7-2 record vs Top 100 RPI teams, 4-1 vs the top 50, and have been ranked in the Top 25 most of the year. They are a slam dunk at large if they lose tonight. Wright State has an RPI in the 90s and their only quality win is over Butler.
-
So obviously this is the exception to the rule. Go Butler!
-
Everybody's favorite Bracketologist was on "Cold Pizza" this morning and made that exact point. Butler is getting in no matter what so you better hope they win their conference tournament if you're on the bubble. Clearly.....They are the exception to the rule.
-
So to review.....We want Butler, Oral Roberts and Arkansas State to win tonight?
-
So to review.....We want Butler, Oral Roberts and Arkansas State to win tonight?
Ark St. is 18-14 so if anything you would root for N. Texas. Neither will get an at large so it doesn't matter.
Butler is the only one that matters. ORU won't get in if they lose.
-
While it has been enjoyable to watch scrappy teams with 5-10 guards and 6-6 centers, I am ready for the big boy tournaments to start tomorrow.
 :beerchug:
-
Oral Roberts is in
-
Wright State 31
Butler 29
HALF
-
A look ahead to Wednesday's keys for us
A UConn upset of Syracuse would be huge for us and put the Cuse squarely on the bubble (where I think they belong anyway)
Also Providence upsetting WVU would probably knock them out of contention.
That said, those underdogs better not make a run and play their way in like Syracuse last year.
-
Wright State 60
Butler 55
FINAL
:banghead:
-
Today we've got the start of the Big East Tournament and the Northeast Conference and Big Sky Conference Championship Game.
In the Big East -
Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Notre Dame, Marquette and PROBABLY Syracuse seem to be good to go. The teams to watch are West Virginia and DePaul. Today you'll want to watch the West Virginia vs. Providence and DePaul vs Villanova games with great interest. I say:
Go Providence and Go Villanova
In the Northeast Conference you'll want to cheer for Central Connecticut State and in the Big Sky Conference you'll want to cheer for Weber State.
-
Saul, why didn't you use the word "official" in your thread title (you know, the good thread about this stuff)?
-
Villanova 75
DePaul 67
FINAL
I think this is another great thing
:ksu:
-
Syracuse 78
Connecticut 65
FINAL
This does two things:
1. It probably puts Syracuse in even though I think they already were and
2. It makes sure that Connecticut doesn't make a magical run this weekend and regulates them to the NIT
:beerchug:
-
Tonight's games of note (teams we want to win in bold):
West Virginia vs. Providence
Northern Arizona vs. Weber State
Sacred Heart vs. Central Connecticut State
-
catsfan, just a hint. Before posting "games of note" in the future, please glance at the RPI. Games between low-major teams both ranked outside the top 60 or so (RPI) really are irrelevant when it comes to the NCAA Tournament. It would be nice for Providence to beat WV, but those other 4 teams are fighting to be the next two 14-16 seeds from 1 team leagues.
-
Better to be safe then sorry
-
I think Sacred Heart probably would get in ahead of us.
-

Central Connecticut State won the NEC which is a good thing and the Big Sky game is just about to start. West Virginia winning isn't the end of the world. What we need to hope for is a Louisville win tomorrow. Villanova winning is a GREAT thing.

Championship Week begins in full today. Today we've got action in the WAC, SWAC, Southland, SEC, Pac 10, Mountain West, MAC, Conference USA, Big West, Big 10, Big East, Big 12, A 10, America East and ACC Conferences. The following are the teams whose names you're going to want to listen for over the next few days:
WAC - Nevada but watch what New Mexico State and Fresno State do
SWAC - Mississippi Valley State
Southland - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi
SEC - Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are locks. Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Miss St. and Georgia need big runs in the Conference Tournament to have a shot
Pac 10 - UCLA, Arizona, USC, Washington State and Oregon are in. The bubble team is Stanford
Mountain West - BYU and Air Force are the only sure thing. San Diego State is another possibility
MAC and Conference USA - Toledo and MAYBE Akron in the MAC and probably just Memphis in C-USA
Big West - Long Beach State
Big 10 - Ohio State, Wisconsin and Indiana are locks. Watch Michigan State, Michigan and especially Purdue and Illinois
Big East - We've discussed this at length. Things seem to be going as planned there
Big 12 - The thing to watch is if Texas Tech beats Colorado, the winner of TTU-KSU should be in
A 10 - Xavier and UMass are hopefully it for them
America East - It's Vermont and Albany for that league's bid
ACC - North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Maryland, Duke seem to be locked in while Georgia Tech and the winner of Clemson-Florida State will probably get in too.

Florida State
Losers -
Alabama
Clemson
Yet to play -
Fresno State
New Mexico State
Georgia
Stanford
San Diego State
Akron
Memphis
Massachusetts
Georgia Tech
Also.....Texas Tech beat Colorado setting up the match up the Cats were looking for. Seriously.....Things couldn't be going better this week.
:ksu:

Things are starting to go bad in a hurry:
UCLA, Duke, Maryland and Air Force lost. Michigan winning hurts too. On the good side Alabama and West Virginia lost.
-

cal winning is good. af losing is good. ucla, duke, and maryland losing is not relevant.
illinois winning sucked. if stanford goes on to beat usc (up 10 now) that will really suck. most games have gone our way. a few of the more important ones haven´t.
-
After yesterday's games:
ACC - North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Virginia Tech, Boston College and Duke are all locks. Florida State beat a bubble team and had another lose. Clemson is out and Georgia Tech will probably get in.
Big East - Georgetown, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Notre Dame, Marquette and Villanova are all locks. The questions are whether or not West Virginia and/or Syracuse get in. I say Syracuse is in while West Virginia is out.
Big 10 - Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Purdue are the teams to watch. Ohio State, Wisconsin and Indiana are locks.
Big XII - Kansas, Texas A&M and Texas are locked in. The biggest question of the day is what happens with Texas Tech and Kansas State. The winner should be in but the loser will probably be sweating on Sunday although I have a feeling they're both going to get in.
Pac 10 - UCLA, Washington State, Oregon, Arizona and USC appear to be headed to the Dance. The biggest question mark is what happens to Stanford. The Cardinal lost yesterday so that has to be a very good thing. Cal winning the conference tournament (even though it won't happen) would be interesting. It would kill someone's bubble chances but it would make the Cats loss to them look better.
SEC - Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt are Dance bound. Alabama losing probably ends it for them. Arkansas and Georgia are still alive but probably need two more wins each so you'll want to be for Vanderbilt and Florida today.
In the rest of the conferences I think Missouri State will be out, Xavier needs another win and we need to hope for a Nevada win and for New Mexico State to lose at some point.
:ksu:
-
I forgot to mention that today is the Patriot League Championship Game between Holy Cross and Bucknell where Holy Cross is the favorite. One thing I can tell you for sure is that ku doesn't want to see the winner in their NCAA Tournament Region.

Worst case scenarios that are still possible (things we DON'T want to happen):
ACC - NC State beating Virginia Tech
Big 10 - Ohio State or Wisconsin losing
Big XII - Oklahoma State winning the tournament
SEC - Anybody but Florida winning the tournament
-
It would also be bad if Memphis, Vermont, Florida A&M, Jackson State or Cal Poly wins although it would be the worst if Memphis lost. It's already bad that Nevada lost.
