Not all publicity is good publicity.

Brings a tear to my eye knowing that tens of thousands of fraternity members who'd have otherwise never considered tossing chickens are now fully aware of the nearly endless possibilities for entertainment presented by live chickens at sporting events.

It's a shame MSN has their facts wrong.

No tradition was ended.  It was just made famous because some crazy liberals got involved.  Now when it happens next year people will be expecting it.

Increased ratings for our game.  Excellent.

It was a tradition?

Yes, a very very longstanding tradition when playing the squawks.

I saw this multiple times when I was in school (99-03).

Any true fan would have seen it multiple times, as well.  In 99 a guy actually got charged with animal cruelty because he killed it on the asphalt at the football field.

I honestly don't think you guys realize that the country is pretty much laughing at you, not with you.  And that is quite a feat considering what the vast majority of people actually think of PETA.

Everybody sees stuff like this and thinks about the backwoods Kansans that tried to stop the teaching of evolution.  But you guys keep enjoying the publicity.

I call bull$hit.  Other than peta freaks, anyone who reads the statements quoted below has to be laughing their ass off at peta.

Quote
The letter described chickens as "very intelligent and inquisitive animals" that appeared to have been subjected to "deafening noise, bright lights, terror, abusive handling and likely death for the sake of amusement."

Quote
Said PETA director Debbie Leahy: "Any student who throws live birds on a basketball court should be thrown out of school."

Drunko put down the bottle, you're a dumbass.  PETA is retarded, and this is just one more thing PETA had to stick its animal screwing ass into even though it didn't belong.

THe lady said the student who throws a live bird onto the court should be throw out of school, really where do these people come from.

Though, I thought it unnecessary to take a jab at KSU by mentioning the streak is still alive at the end of the article.

You take yourself way too serious.  I could really care less what people on the coasts think about come college kids tossing a chicken (which mocks our rival'smascot) onto the court for one game a year.  A person from Kansas could find a cure for cancer and all anyone will remember about Kansas is Dorothy and Toto.

The article was definitely a jab at PETA.  They made sure to include the quotes about chickens being very intelligent and inquisitive animals, and also a quote about how students who do that should be kicked out of school.

Didn't some ku fans used to kidnap our old mascot "Touchdown" before the ku-KSU football game every year?  I'm pretty sure I heard they ended up killing one of them.  Can anyone confirm this?

If you see no problem with the chicken tossing, yet are afraid of the flack it will create from a fanatical group, then you lack some serious testicular fortitude.

If you do see a problem with the chicken tossing, you just lack testicles.

If I found out that Oregon State was tossing ducks on the court when they faced Oregon and Peta was protesting it, I'd laugh at Peta, as would most people with common sense.

I think sneaking live chickens into a sporting event and then throwing them on the floor where half of them die is pretty stupid.  I don't care enough about the well being of chickens(that are going to die for food anyways) to get all upset about it.  I find it absolutely hilarious that people are laughing at you and you guys think that everybody is on your side because they hate PETA.  99% of people know that PETA is a joke.  But the fact of the matter is that 99% of people also would never think it's cool or acceptable to sneak a live chicken into a sporting event to throw it on the court where it has a 50/50 shot of dying on impact.

You guys go ahead and keep thinking how awesome you are though.

It's not really about the cruelty to chickens from my perspective.  I just don't really get the point of it.  First of all, when did it become normal or acceptable to sneak a live chicken into a sporting event.  Second, you are doing it to mock a team that you haven't beaten at home since Reagan's first term.  Not one of your current players was alive the last time it happened.  Third, it is actually cruel and while I don't really care about chickens, I don't see why you would go out of your way to torture one.

The 1952 playoffs featured the start of the tradition—the octopus throw. The owner of a local fish market, Peter Cusimano, threw one from the stands and onto the ice. The eight legs were purportedly symbolic of the eight playoff wins it took to win the Stanley Cup at the time.

The chickens who enter Bramlage have a 75% chance to live until they die of old age at the K-state vet clinic.

The chickens who are not selected have a 100% chance to live until they are slaughtered.

HOW IMMORAL!

It's almost as bad as killing a wildcat.  Although I've got to hand it to the ku students back in the day who killed Touchdown, they've got balls.  I wouldn't &@#% with a wildcat personally.

Oh, it's ok because the chickens can fly.  Well, it didn't look like the ones that were thrown on the court and ended up in a trashcan got the memo about the flying thing.  Or maybe the KSU fans got so excited that they forgot to untuck the chicken's head from its wing.

You are on a roll today.  First, you think Rick Barnes and Mack Brown are bad coaches and now this.  I'd be surprised if they don't make you wear a helmet.

In his early years at UT, Mack Brown was sometimes referred to as "Coach February", a nickname that indicated he performed well during the important recruiting season, but failed to follow up with equally impressive wins on the field. His detractors felt that with all the resources at his disposal at Texas, combined with the talent he was recruiting from high school programs, that he should have more to show for it than appearances in the Holiday Bowl or Cotton Bowl. They felt that he should be playing for Big 12 titles or even National Championships instead.

In five of the eight seasons under Brown, the Longhorns have been all but eliminated from either of these two goals due to losses in October to Big 12 rival Oklahoma. Since the two teams play in the same division of the Big 12, a loss by Texas to Oklahoma means that Texas cannot win the south half of the conference unless Oklahoma loses at least two conference games. That single loss can easily leave the Longhorns in third or fourth place in the conference, behind the North and South division winners. 2001 was an exception that did little to ease the criticism. In that year's campaign, the Longhorns lost to the Sooners but were given another chance when the Sooners lost to both Nebraska and Oklahoma State. Texas made it to the Big 12 Conference Championship Game, losing to Colorado, a school they had beaten by a substantial margin earlier in the year. A similar opportunity presented itself in 2002. After Oklahoma beat Texas, they lost to Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. However, Texas had sufferred a heart-breaking loss to Texas Tech so they did not make the championship game.

Although Brown consistently led the Longhorns to a bowl game to cap off each season, his first six years he was not able to lead them to a Bowl Championship Series game, having to settle each year for the Holiday Bowl or Cotton Bowl. His record in these games was 3 and 3, with two of the 3 losses coming at the hands of supposedly inferior teams as judged by the rankings headed into the games.

Learn something from you?  I doubt it.  Luckily, I don't really come hear to learn.  It would be nice if something either intelligent or funny was contained in one of your posts though.

I'm not sure if you realized this or not, but UT has won 2 of the last 3 Big 12 football titles and 2 Rose Bowls(with one of those being for a National Title).

And if you are going to cut and paste an article written 4 years ago, you can at least tell us where you got it from so we can give credit to the smart guy that wrote it.  Wow.  You really just used an article that is 4 years old to prove a point when UT has won so much since then.  I thought you were an idiot, but you are shattering the scale of how dumb a person can be.  Seriously, my dog wouldn't even be that stupid and the only education he's had is puppy training.

If you aren't funny and you aren't smart, then you are just the idiot that everybody points and laughs at.  According to this thread, you guys get off on that, so I guess it works out well for you.

It's been fun guys, but I have to go.  Maybe tomorrow you can tell me how Worldcom is a good investment and link me a really old article telling me why you're right.

Uh, just so you know.. UT did not win the Big 12 2 of the last three years.

Oklahoma won it in 2004, beating Colorado.  Texas won it in 2005, destroying Colorado, and OU won it last year.

Just to help your facts out.

You're right.  My bad.  I spaced out that OU/CU game.  It doesn't really change my point though.

I really don't understand your point at all.

There are lots of threads on here discussing basketball, and there are a few threads, like this one, that are meaningless banter.

What's interesting is watching you get into a pissing match about a couple of threads that aren't the norm about this board.   I suppose if you felt the need to get into a serious discussion of basketball, you wouldn't waste most of your posts in the meaningless threads.

Octopus in Detroit = used to take 8 wins to win the cup

Why don't you go e-mail American Airlines and tell them to stop shooting chickens at planes.

How the hell did PETA know anything about it in the first place?

Exactly what you probably already figured. A ku fan (woman) tattle taled like a whiny little Jayhawk, STRAIGHT to PETA.

Drunko,  most of the nation laughs when they see a huge cartoon chicken painted on the floor of your gym.

Take out the KSU wins, and ku hasn't beaten anyone in conference.

Their best conference win outside KSU is 6th place Mizzou.  WOW!

#3 in the nation, and out in the 2nd round?     :)

Nothing like a fan of one of the cheating-est basketball programs in NCAA history over here running smack very poorly about what goes on at KSU.
