Title: Lack of inside play
Post by: tmramrod91 on February 20, 2007, 12:04:41 AM
Our lack of a true big man scoring threat is so evident when we play against solid teams. There is no such thing as an inside out game with this group of guys. Even a touch would open up a shooter, but Colonett dont even get that. In order to play with good teams, you have to have a threat to score the ball inside. That is why Walker and Beasely will be soooo huge next year, its hard to fathom. Both can get to the rack and post up. We have no one outside of an incredibly undersized Hoskins who can do that. And with a team like ku who is long and have good big guys, he struggles (just like he has every time he's played them).  If we can have a guy step up and be as good of an outside shooter as Cartier next year, this team will be leaps and bounds better, simply from having a post game.
And a pg who can penetrate and dish (without turning the ball over) would be very nice.

Is that why they always say that guard play is the staple of winning teams in the NCAA Tournament?*

*I actually agree with you.

Well, in a sense its key to have someone who can knock down shots. But if you have a team like ku who can never even dream of a double team vs us, who have athletic guys, you arent gonna have open shots. Although, in the tourney its always a guard who steps up and makes a big shot/play typically.
So, in short...it takes a good team to do well in the NCAA tourney (duh)

I actually find it quite astonishing that KSU has won as many games as they have this season given how limited we are on offense.  No one can penetrate and create anything, we have nothing inside from the bigs, and there isn't even anyone who can create their own mid-range shot.  We're pretty much limited to setting screens and passing the ball around hoping something opens up ... and we're honestly not that good a passing team.  ku really exposed the Cats' offensive problems but I doubt we see a team that athletic again the rest of the year.

dude, the refs were pissing me off.  I can't remember who it was, but he goes through the middle of the lane, and plows through a defender (clearly planted feet)  makes the 4 foot shot...no foul called.  also, another ku guy grabs a rebound and fell down...*whistle* FOUL!

We have inside presence...unfortunately he is only about 6'4" and just can't do it against bigger, taller, quicker guys.  Against most teams PF or C he can find a way to score but ku's guys are bigger, quicker, more athletic and agile...and they have more than one.  Without Hoskins, we have NO inside presence.  I am only concerned for next year because we lose Martin and Harris...our only two real outside shooters.  Hopefully, our incoming players will be able to fill that role given the talents of Beasley, Walker, and Hoskins.  And, hopefully, Bennett and Colon will each develop some hands, strength, ideas on footwork, desire to have the ball, and a few basic inside moves.  Oh, and a point guard who can penetrate would be good, too!
