Title: Pick the Tourney Teams
Post by: AzCat on February 18, 2007, 03:54:54 AM
For the sake of brevity I'll concede slots to A&M, ku, & UT.

Okie Lite 18-7 (5-6)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
vs A&M - L
at Tech - L
vs KSU - L
at Baylor - W
at Nebraska - W

20-10 (7-9)

Verdict: Out, no Big XII team has ever made the dance with less than 9 conference wins so Okie Lite will probably have played themselves out of contention by the time KSU visits Stillwater.  They really need to finish 4-1 to have a shot and I just don't see it.

Tech 17-10 (6-6)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
at Texas - L
vs Okie Lite - W
vs Baylor - W
at Iowa State - W

20-10 (9-7)

Verdict: In, the RPI is solid and the SOS is currently #13 so a solid finish gets them in.  Fail to go 3-1 and they'll finish 8-8 dooming them to the NIT unless the selection committee takes pity on Knight.  It's worth noting that it would be fairly difficult for both Tech and OSU to get in as they both *really* need the upcoming TT/OSU game.

Oklahoma 14-10 (6-6)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
at Mizzou - L
vs Texas - L
vs Kansas - L
at Kansas State - L

14-14 (6-10)

Verdict: Out, they're playing fairly well right now but their only road wins are @Tulsa and @Baylor and they just don't have the players to match up with Kansas right now.

Kansas State 19-8 (8-4)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
vs Kansas - L
at Colorado - W
at Okie Lite - W
vs Oklahoma - W

22-8 (11-5)

Verdict: In, and very likely in even if we lose to Okie Lite as flipping that game will likely leave Okie Lite 8-8, a historically bad spot for a Big XII team.  But KSU should have the benefit of catching Okie Lite right after they play themselves out of contention for an NCAA bid.

And don't laugh but Mizzou could win out, finish 20-9 (9-7), pick up a couple of wins in the Big XII tourney and sneak in if the comittee is feeling generous.

Not sure Texas is the lock you think they are.

vs Tech
at OU
vs A&M
at ku

At best they will be 2 - 2 down the stretch. Which would put them 21 - 9 (11 -5).  If they stumble against Tech and\or OU they only have 20 wins going into the conference tourney.  Their current RPI (via realtime) is 46. They are 3 - 5 against the current top 50 and with losses to A&M and ku they would move to 4 - 7.  Their signature wins are OSU, Tech, Arkansas.  By selection sunday the OSU win may not be that much of a signature.  UT could very easily find themselves needing a win in Oklahoma City to get their ticket punched to the dance.

My prediction of tourney teams.

A&M
ku
KSU
Texas
Tech

I agree the OSU is out.  The best record I could get for them was 8 - 8 and that won't do it in the Big 12 this year.

God its nice to actually have the Cats in these discussions this year and not have to read thread after thread about the f'ning NIT.

Good breakdown.  I see it shaking out a little differently with Tech & Oklahoma State.

Okie Lite 18-7 (5-6)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
vs A&M - L
at Tech - L
vs KSU - W
at Baylor - W
at Nebraska - L

20-10 (7-9)

Verdict: Out.  Yes, the've completely imploded and are undeserving of the NCAA's, but even though they lost to Mizzou and we should beat them, Gallagher Iba is still one of toughest placest to win in the Big XII and I see this one as a loss for us.  They'll have their backs against the wall.  I give the edge to the pokes.  They will however lose to either Baylor or Nebraska on the road.  Oklahoma State has proven to be a horrible road team in conference play and this will be on display again in one if not both of these contests.

Tech 17-10 (6-6)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
at Texas - L
vs Okie Lite - W
vs Baylor - W
at Iowa State - L

19-11 (8-8)

Verdict: In. the RPI is solid and the SOS is currently #13 so a solid finish gets them in.  Fail to go 3-1 and they'll finish 8-8 dooming them to the NIT unless the selection committee takes pity on Knight.   Agreed.  And they will take pity on Knight.  With the wins they have against ku, and A&M twice, this team deserves to be in at 8-8.

Oklahoma 14-10 (6-6)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
at Mizzou - L
vs Texas - L
vs Kansas - L
at Kansas State - L

14-14 (6-10)

Verdict: Out. they're playing fairly well right now but their only road wins are @Tulsa and @Baylor and they just don't have the players to match up with Kansas right now.   Ditto

Kansas State 19-8 (8-4)
--------------------------

Remaining schedule:
vs Kansas - L
at Colorado - W
at Okie Lite - L
vs Oklahoma - W

21-9 (10-6)

Verdict: In.  But nervous as hell on selection sunday after seeing Missouri State get jobbed last year in the valley with teams with worse conference records getting pickeg ahead of them for the dance.  and very likely in even if we lose to Okie Lite as flipping that game will likely leave Okie Lite 8-8, a historically bad spot for a Big XII team.  But KSU should have the benefit of catching Okie Lite right after they play themselves out of contention for an NCAA bid.    I do think we lose to O-State and ku, and finish 10-6.

And don't laugh but Mizzou could win out, finish 20-9 (9-7), pick up a couple of wins in the Big XII tourney and sneak in if the comittee is feeling generous.    Agree again.  After watching that Oklahoma State game, I was thinking to myself how lucky we are we beat them twice when we did.  This is a dangerous team, and one I definitely don't want to go up against in conference tourney.
