To illustrate the point, Huggins explained that K-State spent hours examining the variety of screens Nebraska uses to free its 6-foot-11 center. But despite that preparation, K-State's interior defense was defenseless against Maric, who needed only 14 seconds to get untracked.
Anyone else remember early in the season when Huggs compared coaching our guys to the movie 50 First Dates?
Brilliant analogy. Spot on. I wonder if Huggs will think of Bennett/Colon next time he sees that movie.

Yeah, this also reminds me of when Huggins said the players obviously weren't studying the materials that they were given regarding upcoming opponents. We've got one dedicated crew.
-
I think Blake Young didn't know who Jarrius Jackson was.
-
The guys have responded to Huggins "kind and gentle" motivation techniques in the past, and I hope they respond again. Sometimes you have to wonder, and we don't hear nearly everything coach is saying to these guys.
I do think its time to put Stew and Harris back in as starters. The last two games I keep wondering where our offense is going to come from (besides Hoskins) early when we have Young, Maybank, Wright, Hoskins, and Colon are on the floor. I think both Young and Maybank are better coming off the bench at this point. I understand the point Huggs was trying to make, but somethings don't need to be changed that radically. I still like Martin coming off the bench though. And we've got to get Hoskins going again, his last 3 games have been less than what we expect (and need, especially offensively) from him. Granted, I think teams are really trying to take him away on that end, but something can be done to get him the ball in position to score.
-
At least get Harris back in there. I think Young vs. Stewart is a wash, but Harris brings sooooooo much more than Maybank.
Thanks for the link, Joker. :)

Yeah, we all loved Maybank's effort against ku, but one game shouldn't overshadow the season. Maybank actually wasn't too bad against NU, but I'm thinking a Maybank-Stew combination and a Young-Harris combination if we only have 2 guards on the floor makes more sense. And we've been playing 3 of those guys on the floor quite a bit lately as well. I know changing line-ups has been common all year, so it shouldn't be a big deal, but after the 7 game win streak I'd think you might want to stick with it in spite of the ku game. The line-up and rotation for those 7 was pretty consistent.

stewart played 37 and harris 36 against nu. so starting or not, they haven´t been losing minutes to young/maybank.

Yeah, I'll admit I couldn't watch the game and was too pissed to look at the box score.

Yeah, you're right, I just looked at that. I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill here. I guess I'm just searching for things hoping these guys get out of their funk. Tuesday was just a disappointing loss, especially after making the drive to Lincoln to watch it.

Fun Facts:
A/TO in Conference play:
Young - 1.47
Stewart - 1.12
A/40 min. in Conference play:
Young: 4.89
Stewart: 3.66
FG% in Conference play:
Young: 41.9%
Stewart: 40.5%

do you have % 3 pt and/or a % of shots 3s vs 2s. i would be curious about that.
stewart started the conf. off hot, but has sort of regressed to his mean career performance the last 5 games or so.
-
I can handle losing hard fought games to more talented teams. The talent will start coming in next season.
But watching us break down fundamentally time and time again gets pretty frustrating. It makes you wonder if some of our guys aren't totally committed.

02 Young, Blake....... 26-11 539 20.7 46-133 .346 15-52 .288 43-66 .652 13 38 51 2.0 52 0 64 44 2 31 150 5.8
05 Stewart, Clent..... 26-15 617 23.7 51-137 .372 25-73 .342 22-32 .688 15 48 63 2.4 36 0 67 48 0 16 149 5.7
They're really pretty even. Again, this only confirms that we cannot be a one PG team, we need both these guys, and we've got to hope one or the other steps up on a game by game basis. Maybank has really developed into a SG role in Big 12 play and he rarely plays PG, so we're really down to these two at the PG spot now.

3FG%:
Young: 33%
Stewart: 38%
% of 3's:
Young: 38.7%
Stewart: 46%
So there's definitely a huge plus for Stewart there.

thanks for the stats. stew´s advantage on 3s is balanced out or outweighed by young getting to the line a lot more. i think rusty nailed it early. they are basically a wash.

I think BY has been too timid in league play. He could be getting to the line more.

That's the thing I see, in conference games they are basically even in getting to the FT line. We all know that Young is not the shooter that Clent is, but he's been inconsistent in getting inside a defense and that's what he's got to do. He really is starting to show his explosion and ability to score inside, but its only for moments and not consistent. If he wants to play, he's got to show some of that and play the defense he is capable of. The key thing that has probably edged Stewart over Young (29 MPG vs 16 MPG in conference play says a lot) is that Stew has become a capable defender, and Young probably isn't defending quite as well as expected. Stew is still the most steady option at PG, but we really need him to be hitting a couple treys per game and that has dropped off lately. We don't need Stew/Young to score 15 per game, but we do need double digits (combined) and around 5-6 assists per game. They're giving us close to that on average, but we need it consistently down the stretch if we want to be a NCAA team.

Which scenario do you prefer:
Clent bringing the ball up the court. Timid, one step slower than defender, likely to lose ball when pressured,
no real threat to drive/penetrate.
Blake bringing the ball up the court. Head down, one step quicker than his own thought processing capability,
moderately out of control.

pretty much either is fine with me as long as they pass it to hoskins to key the half court offense. what annoys me is when stewart thinks he can whip a 30 foot pass past 3 defenders into the low post. or young decides to drive straight at a guy posting up.

On a per minute basis, Young gets to the line a TON more than Stew:
Young: 5.33 Att/40 min
Stew: 2.8 Att/40 min

Early or trailing: Blake
Preserving a lead: Clent
Keep in mind that Blake creates a lot more steals, too. IMO, Clent is a "play not to lose" type player. Which is good at times.

Its clear, Young and Stewart are much different players with different strengths, and neither a "true" PG.
A couple more stats: (Big 12 only)
Stew has 1 assist every 11.1 minutes (of PT), Young has 1 every 8.2.
Stew has 1 TO every 12.4 minutes, Young 1 every 12.0.
Stew has 1 trey (made) ever 24.8 minutes, Young 1 every 45.0.
Stew has 1 rebound every 9.8 minutes, Young 1 every 10.6.
Stew has 1 steal every 53.8 minutes, Young 1 every 22.5.
Stew has 1 FT attempt every 14.0 minutes, Young 1 every 7.5.
Stew has 1 point every 3.6 minutes, Young 1 every 4.1.

nice stats. are y'all finding these per minute stats somewhere or calculating them yourselves? either way, nice.

I just calculated them real quick. The stats just prove that we need both these guys and both provide different things to this team. We've got to have these two play well down the stretch.

Bingo, Stew was brought in with Dez as the pg
young was brought in with Hannah as the pg.

Maybe it's just perception, but BY has had difficulty finishing drives around the rim. Some of them look like fouls that don't get called, and maybe that's because he just looks somewhat out of control.
