Title: LOL. Cally to chargers?
Post by: WildCatzPhreak on February 13, 2007, 03:32:22 PM
It would be hilarious to watch the ensuing meltdown.

But at the same time..I would hate to see a competent gameday coach in Lincoln with the talent that Nebraska has right now.

I mean seriously, it'd be like if Bob Knight(great gameday coach, not the best recruitier) took over for Bill Self(horrible gameday coach, great recruiter.)  Yeowch.

I still think it'd be worth it just to see the meltdown, personally.

How often does a football coach go 9-3 and get fired and vilified at every level by the fanbase and the AD, only to have the replacement never even come close to a 9-3 record and yet get promoted and propped up at every level by the fanbase and the administration??  Frank Solich won a conference title and played for a national title (that was kind of a joke), and went 9-3 in his last season, and they nearly burned the man at the stake.    Solich lost some tough games, but never lost by 60 to anybody, or never purposely tried to hold on to the ball and play ultraconservative so as not to get beat to bad ala NU @ OU that same year.

Like I keep saying, in one stretch, it took Tom Osborne 7 years to lose as many games as  Slashahan has done in 3.  During that time Cornhole State fans mumbled, bitched and moaned about Osborne . . . now they claim "we're back" with Slashahan.

Solich... 69% winning in the B12
Signature win: Beating #2 OU 20-10 in 2001
Signature loss: Then #4 UNL losing to #16 KSU in 2000

Callahan... 54%
Signature win: 32-28 over a 7-5 Michigan team in 2005
Signature loss: 10-70 beat down by TTech in 2004

Huh.

yes, cause we all know that all the incompetant head coaches got to the NFL to be head coaches.

Well, just the ones that turn a team talented enough to go to the superbowl into a two win team the very next season.

I mean, can you HONESTLY tell me you're happy with the playcalling you've seen from Callahan since he got to Nebraska?  I doubt any husker fan that has paid any serious attention to it at all could say that they were happy with the playcalling and keep a straight face.

He's a good recruiter.  I'll give him that.  But he's hitting the jucos pretty hard for a team that's supposedly too elite to touch the lowly likes of the jucos.

"Well, just the ones that turn a team talented enough to go to the superbowl into a two win team the very next season."

do you mean guys like john gruden?  didn't he do something similair?  win the superbowl and then suck almost right away?  if it was college football you would have a point.  but not nfl.  The talent is way to close, so close that just a few injuries can make the differance between a 10 wins team and a 4 win team.  Callahan, in the year following the superbowl had lost 7 players to injury.  including his top 2 qb's.  You tell me how the colts would have done this year with both manning and his backup out for the year?

"I mean, can you HONESTLY tell me you're happy with the playcalling you've seen from Callahan since he got to Nebraska? "

playcalling is a reflection of talent.  When you have talent deficiencies like we do it's hard to call the plays you want to on offense.  We are slowly fixing that problem every year.  Since Callahan has taken over he has scored more points per game than the previous season every season.  I have no problem with improvement.  You can talk about firing a 9-3 frankie all you want but just look at our offensive output under his regime.  went from 47 points per game to 27 in 02 and 24 in 03.  All we saw with frank was a steady decline.  and that 9-3 record.  beat 9 crappy teams and the 3 good teams we played beat us by about 4 td's per game.  9-3 might get you a parade at some schools, even when it's obvious your not competitive with good teams anymore but not at NU.

" I doubt any husker fan that has paid any serious attention to it at all could say that they were happy with the playcalling and keep a straight face."

I also doubt that many fans are in a position to second guess an offensive minded coach with Callahans ability.  I don't get into the armchair second guessing stuff to much unless it's something very obvious, like down by 4 points and you run a qb keeper on 3rd and 30.

well, when he took over we had only 63 kids on schol.  that is alot of holes to fill.  He took 12 the first year, then 7 the second and 6 this year.  I don't care if he takes 3-4 per year.  If history proves to be true the jucos he takes are among the very best in the nation and have a high degree of success.  I would just hope his jucos come for defense.

It'd be funny if he just texted 'em from San Diego and said, "I'm not coming...back."
