Title: Devaney Memories....
Post by: ksu_FAN on February 12, 2007, 09:11:35 AM
Jan 15, 1997.  The year after Asbury leading the Cats to the NCAAs, the Cats are missing the leadership of Elliot Hatcher and Tyron Davis, but still manage a decent 7-3 OOC with losses to WSU, @ Michigan State, and @ Xavier.  After starting the Big 12 0-2 with losses to ku and UT, the Cats have a winnable road game vs NU and build a double digit half-time lead.  However, the wheels fall off in the 2nd half as the Cats blow the lead allowing NU to win by 10 in OT.  The Cats go on to start the league 0-9 and finish with 3 wins in the league.

Feb 9, 2002.  At 3-6, the Cats travel to Lincoln to face a Nebraska team that also has a 3-6 league mark.  The Cats would hit 14-24 threes in this game, but their defense was non existant in allowing NU to score 99 and this game probably helped drive home the "fool's gold" philosophy for Wooly.  A back and forth game falls apart late in the 1st as the Cats give up a 12-0 run.  In typical Wooly-like fashion, the the Cats get down by 16 in the 2nd half, but battle back to cut the lead to 8 a minute later.  However, its another bit of too little too late as the Huskers put the game away down the stretch.  Cats finish the season 13-16.

As we head to Lincoln tomorrow, realize the Cats have played well there the last 3 times; only a silly Massey foul from being 3-0 in our last 3 trips.

NU will again try to pound the ball to Maric and get outside shooting from Perry and Anderson who are both hitting better than 43% from 3.  An already depleted roster will be even shorter without one of last year's All Big 12 freshman member Jamel White who was dismissed for the season sunday.

When you look at this game you have to think that Maric will likely have a much better game than he did in Manhattan when he scored only 10 points.  However, you also have to think we'll manage better than the 32% shooting we had vs NU and do a better job on the boards, especially the offensive glass.  NU has cooled from being one of the nation's better shooting teams in their OOC to hitting only 42% in league play and averaging a league low 59 PPG.  This will be a game where we'll have to hope we can get out and run a little, but that will be difficult b/c NU doesn't hit the offensive glass at all.  They'll want to keep the game in the 50s if possible, but its still one we should win if we come to play in Lincoln.  I'll say Cats 66, Huskers 59 in another low scoring contest.
