Title: Thoughts from today's game.
Post by: Dan Rydell on February 11, 2007, 02:51:20 AM
*  Colorado was the perfect opponent after that ku showing.  Man, they're horrible.  Even when they were hitting some shots to keep it within 4 or 6 in the first half, I wasn't worried at all.  They just look bad out there.  It was like one of those preseason games against the EA Sports All*Stars, except with less talent.

*  Why was the crowd not very excited for pretty much the last 3/4 of the game today?  Two reasons:  defense and athletes.  First, our defense just doesn't create a whole lot of breakaway highlight opportunities that you need to get to keep the crowd in blowouts like this.  Sure, playing solid D for 25 seconds and then making a few nice passes for a layup on the other end after about 20 seconds is nice, but those aren't the type of plays that are going to get the crowd on its feet in blowouts.  This ties into the second reason, athletes.  We really miss having an athlete on this team that can just stuff the ball on a 3-on-2 breakaway in a game like this.  Lance Harris is probably the closest we have, and he had an opportunity once or twice today, but missed the dunks when he got fouled.  Whe Blake Young, Clent Stewart, and Akeem Wright are coming down the court on a 3-on-2, you're saying "Please don't blow this" and then you clap appreciatively when one of them manages to make a layup that's not blocked or just missed, rather than holding your breath to see how many revolutions your guy's gonna make before he slams it home.  End result?  These guys win some blowouts, but they're some of the most boring blowouts ever.  Not that I'm complaining, mind you.  It's better than losing to Colorado or Nebraska at home.

*  Did anyone else see Akeem dribbling the ball with his wrist near halfcourt today?  Great stuff.

*  This team has me feeling comfortable for the rest of the season.  Granted, today wasn't an inspired effort, but Cartier showed up, and they did what they were supposed to do.  They're still in third, and hopefully by Tuesday they're fired up enough to go into Lincoln and take one step closer to locking up a first-round bye in the Big XII tourney.

*  For those asking, Bennett didn't play until about the 10:00 mark in the first half.  I was wondering how long he was going to be held out today.  Serge got quite a bit of time.

Man, how huge would a 1st round bye be?  That's an advantage we haven't had in the postseason tourney--EVER.  Its a lot easier to keep your legs intact playing 3 games instead of 4.  Just call me "Captain Obvious."
