This would have been Wooly's year. :frown:

turnovers?

You have to think that even Wooly would have had a good shot at going .500 in this league, this year.
Our success is going to be mainly thanks to the retarded state of Big XII North basketball.

After reading Hatter's ravings about these stats, I wondered how long it would take someone to figure it out.
W's are all that matter.

fatty,
I'm all for your continuing this posting theme. It seems to be working well so far. You are well on your way to double-reverse psyching this team into repsectability.

You're missing a key stat; FT attempts and percentage.
We're shooting 28 per game this year as opposed to 20 last year. We're hitting 77% as opposed to 70%. That works out to 7-8 more points per game. Throw in defending the 3, and you're talking over 10PPG difference in our favor. This just really shows how fine the margin of error is in this league. Improve just a couple small things and you can make a big move. Now we just need to maintain it the rest of the year.
-
Sure, the north generally sucks, but KSU is better. This team would have been better than 6-10 last year.
Is there a way to assign an "Intimidation Factor" to each player in the Big XII and then rate teams by it? Such as:
Intimidation Factor x Minutes Played Per Game = Intimidation Product
David Hoskins, for example, could rate as a 95 (scale of 100). Darren Kent would rate as a 2, and so on.
-
That was the most maddening thing about Wooly's teams . . . always "missed it by this much". So far, KSU has uglied its way into no brainers at the buzzer. Wooly's teams crumbled so many times down the stretch.

Nice. It's also easier to correlate that to coaching than something like FG %

If Durant's a 100 on the Intimidation Factor Scale (IFS) I don't see Hoskins at 95.
I'd give him a 85 IFS index.

Excellent, FAN.
FTA's are possibly the most overlooked statistic in basketball.

Give me a break. Wooly would have lost the Mizzou game, Baylor game, and Nebraska game. We would be sitting at 1-5 or 2-4 if we were lucky.

wooly OWNED the ivory coast. and french volleyball circuit.
asbury owned australia.

3-pointer = fool's gold. Wooly
The funny thing is, Huggs has pretty much let the guys learn this concept on their own. He pretty much let them shoot any open 3 they got early in the year, and eventually they figured out there are better ways to run his offense. We are shooting more 3s this year, but in league games only slightly more at 16 per compared to 13 last year. Huggs preaches very similar things; do the things you can control, ie. defense and rebounding, and you'll win. Huggs just teaches his teams to play much tougher and apply more pressure to their opponents.
-
The big difference is that Wooly actually got some quality wins over ku and A&M, while Huggs is still holding on to that HUGE win over USC.

Agreed.

Wooly got that one win (in how many tries) vs ku and aTm was a 12 seed in the tourney. A good win, yes, but not a great win.
Last 10 games ---- Holding opp. to 60 pts/g and shooting FT at a 75% clip. We will go 6-4 or 7-3 if our next 10 games have those 2 key stats.

You really aren't very good at this, are you?
Wooly also had quality losses including UMKC, Northern Illinois, Rutgers (who Huggy beat THERE), EA Sports All-Stars, and snuck by powerhouse Gardner Webb by 3 points. Huggins lost to NM, Cal, Col. State, Xavier, aTm, and Ttech (a team you may be familiar with). Only disappointing loss there=Col St. You could argue that the Cal, Xavier, and NM losses were all disappointing, but.....wait.
You're also comparing a coach halfway through his FIRST YEAR and a guy who coached at Kansas State for five years.
I'm not saying Wooly was a total pile of crap, but your comparison is as flawed as the rest of your squawk logic.

Wooldridge had plenty of nice wins - it's just they were offset by multiple horrible losses.

I decided to compile the statistical analysis in this post and bring it to GP to spark any real basketball discussion.
On another board we had an interesting discussion about what statistically is the major difference in this year's and last year's teams and in looking at only the league stats from this year compared to last year, its hard to find major differences. FG% defense is about the same, rebounding is about the same, and last year's team was actually better on offense in FG%, 3PT FG%, and had more assists per game. Granted, its early and we're looking at 16 games compared to 6, but the question becomes what is the major difference?
The first stat that stands out is at the FT line, both in attempts and FT%. Last years team averaged 20 attempts per game and hit 70%, which isn't horrible, but certainly not at the top of the league. This year's team on the other hand averages 28 attempts per game and is hitting 77%. While at first that might not seem huge, that tranlates to a 7 to 8 PPG swing in our favor, and considering the close games we lost, that makes a huge difference.
The 2nd major factor is our 3PT % defense. Last year opponents hit 34% compared to 24% this year. The attempts are about the same, so again that translates to 2 to 3 less 3 point makes by our opponents, and we have played several Big 12 teams that lean on the 3. Overall, opponents are making only 1 less FG per game than last year, so that translates to another 2 to 3 points per game in our favor.
So just improving on those two areas has translated in about a 10 point swing in our favor, which is a big reason we're able to win the games this year that we might have lost last year; @ MU and BU and NU in Manhattan come to mind.
The key is going to be maintaining those statistical trends and hopefully improving the offensive ones. I think staying where we're at will allow us to win those games we "should", but it will take improvements overall shooting the ball to get that 1 or 2 upsets we need on our resume come selection sunday.
Apologies for no ksufans.com plug, but most of those folks know where its coming from, plus I didn't want it to get run.

Only if you count wins over two of the worst KSU teams of the decade and one Mizzou team ranked in the Top 25 as "plenty of nice wins."

I was sticking to this sport, actually. But you got the school right.
