I know it's a day old, but it seemed that the intro for the Chicago State game was almost excellent, at least compared to the crap we were subjected to earlier in the season. I liked the whole guitar thing and and the lack of some a-hole singing about coming inside to see the show, to people who had already paid for a ticket were currently inside the building.
-
Eh...I missed it. There was a clusterphuck of traffic and I got in right at the tip off.
-
I missed the intro last night, but they got rid of Karn Evil #9 for the Tech and Baylor games as well. Good move. Did "Bring on the Cats" go any better last night?

I don't recall hearing bring on the cats at all..
-
They should bury "bring on the cats" forever.
-
They tried "Bring on the Cats" again.....worse reception than before. Id be surprised if we hear it on Saturday.

Trying to remanufacture old traditions that weren't really all that cool to begin with is so much lamer than letting new ones happen spontaneously and grow.
-
Bring on the cats does not strike me as something that could be chanted all at the same time easily. Maybe just loudly chanting K-S-U K-S-U or Let's go state would get more people involved. And let our opponents know who they are playing.

True. If someone posted that on GP though they might be banned. Funny how we never have numerous threads about bringing back all those old traditions from the student section in football.
-
What about that great techno song from the early 90's that we all jam to before the game? Can we bury that with our Haddaway collection?

A couple from my parents' days I'd like to bring back:
1) Throwing coolers of beer over the fence before the game, throwing empty coolers over the fence after the game.
2) Find the fattest opposing fan wearing a hat, sneak up behind them, steal the hat, and run away. <---Totally classless
I wish somebody would have brought up the "Bring on the Cats" thing when I was in school. Tony Kitt deserved a good intro cheer.

Remember when we used to clap until we scored our first bucket? I remember clapping a long time during some of those Asbury games. That was fun, and one that hasn't been brought up in any "tradition" threads. :)

We were doing Bring on the Cats during Altman's days, and I thought a little during Asbury too. Never any big production but a few of us clapped and repeatedly said Bring On The Cats

It's happening because of the GoPowertards and the people that haven't been to a basketball game since the Ahearn days. The "big deal" and "who cares" signs are pretty lame as well. They may have been cool in the 70's and 80's, but "&@#% you" and "he sucks" would be much more appropriate.

Yeah, maybe that would be okay now, but back in the Asbury days it was almost painful how long we had to clap. I'd buy a hot dog before tipoff, and it'd be cold by the time we could stop clapping and sit down.

i liked stomping on bleachers in ahearn. until someone brings back stompable bleachers, iīm against all other retrotradition revivals.

Don't knock things that were cool back in the day. Those old basketball crowds were way rowdier and crazier than any of the football crowds during the Snyder era.

I threw in my support.
Let the students start their own stuff. With the gap in success for KSU BB its silly to expect a lot of this stuff to come back.

Didn't we stand up and sing a melody while clapping too? It seems like hardly anyone remembers that. Of course, the student section didn't stand up the whole game back then so it was more obvious than it would be today

I was never in the student section when it didn't stand. Now there were games when large sections would sit b/c it was so bad on the court, but most stood. I was even one of those weird guys that stood through timeouts b/c I was a "real fan". :)
-
No, I wasn't either. I do remember a ku game once when I was like 7-8, and it took us forever to score and my Dad turned to me and said that they're going to stand the whole game. Do you remember the song, anyone?
-
Sweet. I have FAN and "Ballplayers" in my corner. Success is guaranteed, now.
-
Not really guaranteed. BP has been bashed before and almost left GP and people really don't care about my posts over there. Of course they probably don't care here either. :)
-
So, if people want BP here, it would be a good idea to start bashing him there?
-
If GPC had a personal messaging system, i'd send him a PM with a link.

Why don't you try that MyFanPage buddy deal? I haven't really done anything with that.

I still haven't emailed him.

Also, if someone wouldn't mind copying and pasting that thread once it dies down, I'd appreciate it. I can always use a good laugh, and I don't think it's "preumium".

Anyways, I emailed him. Let's hope he registers! :hope:

#1....students BE creative...you are IN College for what/???
#2....I hate the "wildcats", how about "THE Purple" (Stanford is the
Cardinal)??? = too many Wildcats out there
"THE Purple" would do for boys and girls teams
.....could be a color or thing (create a logo/person like Olympics do)
#3....big schools here in Florida have very distinctive names:
Gators Hurricanes Seminoles ALL unique
#4....love my school, but some things are very ordinary about KSU (IMO)
LOL. Can't wait for the GP meltdown over BP's suggestion that we change the mascot...although changing it to "The Purple" would likely make those in the "Our color isn't black" camp pretty happy. Trembling in fear at the ridicule that would rain down on the K-State Purple, however. Of course, there would be an obvious choice for the mascot:

I'm amused by the people who say it just needs to be more organized. The cheer squad tried to lead it the last several games and about the first 4 rows would do it for like 20 seconds and then it would quite while they flashed it on the replay boards. They have tried to get it going in an organized way but it hasn't stuck. That's why I'm to the point where it probably won't and its probably time to move on and let the students come up with their own traditions.
-
Hell, I was a Jr. Blue in high school, so a Purple would probably be a step up.
-
I think we should replace the concrete with a dirt floor so it's hazy like it was in Ahearn.
Maybe we could cut out some windows, too.
-
bp has never replied to anything iīve written in like 2 years. going back to when i was the only one who posted about bball recruiting.
so iīm extremely envious.

I never heard it in Ahearn, but my understanding is that it's still not being done correctly. The music they play behind it doesn't seem to work very well. There seem to very few outside the student section who even try to join in. Part of that may be because a lot of us never heard it before...part of it may be because the bluehairs really frigging suck. I'm sorry, but I don't understand why a lot of these people even bother coming to the games.

I've consistently talked Bball recruiting going way back. I remember "discovering" we were in on Pervis Pasco and simply knowing who Charles Dinkins is has to count for something. :)
BP usually responds to questions I post on his threads.

i played pickup a few times with dinkins before he left ksu. he isnīt a popular choice, but i think he deserves serious consideration as the worst ksu bball player ever.

Also, let me add that I'm exteremely interested to see the atmosphere on Saturday, when I think it's going to be packed. I think having a full house may get people more revved up and we may get more participation in some of this stuff.
That being said, for all of ku's faults, one of the things they do really well is the 10 minutes leading up to tip-off. They just installed videoboards before last season, and they now incorporate them in the run-up, and they've managed to incorporate video that helps rev things up, not kill everything...an area that we've improved upon a bit in the last couple of games. They do the national anthem and the teams leave the floor. Then they sing the alma mater and do the rock chalk chant. Then the players come back out and do their layup drills while the band plays a song that starts slow and ends fast, right at the buzzer. Then the announcer gets on and does his whole "Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Allen Fieldhouse" thing. Then they introduce the visiting team...and then they play their little 20 second video that has a film reel countdown clock on it, begins with Naismith and Phog Allen and Wilt and then shows brief clips of 1988, Paul Pierce, Hinrich, etc., ending with a few dunks by current players. It does a nice job of getting folks excited by going through the history and then the excitement of the present. Then they do the ku intros and start the game.
Now, we do a lot of those same things, but I think the difference lies in two areas: first, it's a tighter presentation (video is done well, no dead time like we get a lot in pregame), and people always know what's coming next, so there's an anticipation. Second, a full house makes a big difference, which is why I'm interested to see what it's like this Saturday. Also, the band plays a bigger role, rather than using the canned, NBA arena music.
Speaking of the band, could it possibly play some music that's been written in the past 20 years? Seriously...I've heard "Shout it out loud" just one too many times. Believe it or not, there are arrangements available of pop songs from the past 5 years...why can't we break one of those out every now and then?

His problem was that he was so bad he didn't play and he left. Only those really bad players that stay around and are horrible can be remembered, like a George Hill and Travis Canby.
Its kind of odd how it seems like bad big guys usually stay around, but bad guards go D2 or something.
And BP has really only been active the last couple years.

Sadly, Wooly's pregame the last few years was kind of similar and much better than what we've seen this year. I don't know how that is possible.

Yeah, I agree that the Wooly pregame was better...at least the video was. IIRC, one of the good things was that they showed the video right before they showed the tunnel walk, which worked pretty darn well.
Honestly, I think part of it is because of how they approached having Huggins. We started out by making the intro this year all about Huggins, which was fine for the first game, but I think after the initial excitement of having Huggins wore off that people were like, "Yeah, Huggins is our coach, but we're KSU, and he's done nothing spectacular here yet." Add in some crappy music selections and crappy flow from one element to the next, and voila.
-
The historical video they've used in recent years was pretty good I thought.
This bring on the cats thing is not working out...at all.

I think you hit something there. Granted, none of this would be happening without Huggins, but they did seem to tilt the pregame to all about Huggins and not about K-State and it doesn't seem to be working. I have no problem with honoring Huggs and making him an integral part of whatever we do, but perhaps more balance is/was in order.

Here's what you do:
10:00: Teams leave the floor, flags come on.
9:40: Introduce the national anthem.
8:00: Alma Mater, Fight Song, Wabash, Willie video, whatever.
5:00: Start video. Video opens with some clip from the Huggins' hire (preferably from Huggy) that talks about KSU's great tradition with some slow music...then, you show photos/clips with the "4 Final Fours, 8 Elite Eights, etc." overlays. Clips of the shot against Oregon State, Ahearn, etc., as the music gets more revved up, ending with some highlights from current players, ending with some sort of grand finale and Deep Voice Guy saying "Bring on the Cats!"
4:30: Cut from the video to the tunnel walk, carrying over the momentum and crowd frenzy from the video. KSU takes the floor as the band plays the fight song.
Then, during warmups, the band plays some newer songs that they've added to their reportoire. You could also play the Willie video here if you wanted, but I think it's better earlier.
~1:00: Band begins playing can-can or Wabash or some other spirited tune timed to end at the buzzer.
0:00: "Welcome to Kansas State University, etc." player intros. No video between away and home intros.
-
That's better, though I'm good with keeping some of the "Welcome to Huggieville" stuff. That's not going away and really doesn't need to. How it is put together just needs work, and what you posted is on the right track.
-
I'm thinking a computer-generated morph of the faces of former KSU coaches and standout players....with background music from Kansas -- Carry on My Wayward Son...
Morph of Gardner-Winter-Fitzsimmons-Hartman-Kruger-Altman-(omitted)-(omitted)-Huggins
Carry on my wayward son
There'll be peace when you are done
Lay your weary head to rest
Don't you cry no more
Morph of Barrett-Parr-Boozer-Murrell-Kruger-Williams-Evans-Blackman-Coleman-Richmond-Martin-Walker
Carry on, you will always remember
Carry on, nothing equals the splendor
The center lights around your vanity
But surely heaven waits for you
Interdisperse video clips of the student section at Ahearn Fieldhouse.
Once I rose above the noise and confusion
Just to get a glimpse beyond this illusion

Come on, most here started and stuck with K-State basketball throughout the 90s and 00s. Its not our fault we weren't born in 1955. We are just as passionate as anyone that got to watch in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

I'll date myself.
Who is Murrell?

...and most here don't remember KSU basketball...
That's like a ku fan saying we have a low Basketball IQ because our teams have essentially sucked for the last 20 years.
There's no direct corelation between supporting a crappy program and understanding the game. As a matter of fact, it could be argued that while we do have our share of bandwagon fans who have followed basketball the past 9 months, the KSU hardliners who have sat through the past 20 years of misery and breaking down 40 point losses to UMKC understand the game better than fans of a successful team like ku where all they do is spend their time idol worshiping.
-

Willie Murrell -- 1964 All-American
6'6" 225 lbs Forward
4th Round NBA Draft Pick (St. Louis)
He had 4 30+ point games in 1964, including 39 against Mizzou
4th all-time overall in season scoring / 4th all-time overall in season average
11th all-time overall in career scoring / 4th all-time in career average
3rd all-time in rebound average
12 double doubles in 1963 / 26 in his KSU career

The comment wasn't made as a slam to the fans of today's basketball program....only as a confirmation that a vast majority of the people that post on this board grew up with Dana Altman as the head coach.
KSU basketball has history -- a rich history that warrants the consideration of fans of "today's" brand and coaches and players. It's history that builds tradition.
Being a perennial powerhouse requires history.
We "Ahearn fans" are incredibly excited about the direction of this basketball program. Not because we're tired of having a losing, non-competitive team, but because we're tired of having a losing, non-competitive team AND we know how much flipping fun it is when you win -- we know history.
-
I can agree with that, especially the "winning is fun" part.
-
My first KSU basketball memories where Mike Evans, Larry Dassie, Darryl Winston. and Steve Soldner(sp?).
We weren't that great when we played in Ahearn. I can't recall us ever being ranked in the top 10. Rarely in the top 20. The times I remember when we did make the sweet 16 or the elite 8 we were always the underdog.
Hartman was famous for playing the zone and slowing the game down. His days were done when the shot clock was introduced.
But we didn't lose to ku at home every single year.
I don't think I am any better than the rest of you because I had the privilege of watching games in Ahearn when I grew up. But if you never got the chance, you did miss out. Go to a game at Allen Fieldhouse if you want to know what it was like. ku built that place to match what KSU had done with Ahearn only they (of course) had to make it slightly bigger. When you are at the game in Allen, imagine all the people packed in tighter and imagine that they are all yelling louder and they are all pounding their feet on the floor so that the entire place vibrates. That was Ahearn.

Ahearn was awesome...
And I thoroughly enjoyed bball at KSU until March of 1988...Then we moved to Bramlage.
I stuck with it all the way until 1998....then Assbury lost me...I came back in about '01.

I totally agree that Ahearn was awesome, but only some of the awe came from the building -- most of it came from the action on the floor and the action in the stands.
During the past 20 or so "lean" years, the atmosphere has changed. Granted, Bramlage doesn't have the primal basketball-drenched aura of Ahearn, but Ahearn only became that way because of the games played there--the teams that took the floor and the fans that made it one of the toughest places to play in college basketball. <--That can happen at Bramlage now too.
Hell, if our record in Ahearn was as poor as our record has been the last 20 years, we would have be looking back at Ahearn with spite.
