Title: T. Newman
Post by: Racquetball_Ninja on December 31, 2006, 03:03:56 PM
Its too bad that his greatness in college didn't transfer over to the NFL.  He's a nice player but by no means a superstar.  I continue to see him get rocked on punt returns and his coverage on D isn't that great either.  I just watched him get scorched by a Lions receiver for a touchdown and the receiver wasn't Roy Williams.  Ouch!

And I do realize that he had a 50 yard punt return for a TD today but that means he has 1 more NFL touchdown that I have... that's not saying much.   :D

Many disagree with you about his coverage skillz.  Besides, he wasn't really a superstar in college anyway (outside of homer-ville).

name 1 other NFL corner that constantly gets manned up on a reciever like Roy Williams with no safety over the top to help.  i think the cowboys probably think a lot higher of Newman than both of you do.

wtf? I thought newman was great when he played for us.

I guess when you recruit studs like Justin Mckinny and Cedric Williams to fill his spot you simply forget T-New.

For the sake of clarification, I believe that most NFL analysts think that Newman is at least one of the best cover corners in the league.  He was also one of the best DBs in college football.  Neither of those things necessarily entail that he is a superstar at either level.  If anything, he is a much bigger star now because he is playing on a much bigger stage.

I'm not saying he wasn't good.  But most college football fans couldn't tell you who won the Thorpe Award in any given year.

I don't want to sound negative regarding the Jim Thorpe award but wtf Jim Thorpe didn't even win it.
Pretty weak imo.

*Chris Canty knew this and that's why he withdrew his name from consideration in 1996
